Nice instructions. Easier and cheaper way is to buy a steel trash can with steel lid and put your laptop inside it. I'd just put it in its regular case. Ensure the lid fits tightly. Any doubt, seal the lid with aluminum foil, as the key to a good Faraday cage is making sure the current can flow around the container and have no gaps in the lid.

Also, make sure you put some method to charge the laptop or Kindle like a solar charger.

I assume you are thinking about storing your survival books on a laptop, since the Internet and grid will be down. Unless you wanted to use the computer to control something, not much other use for it after an EMP event. I guess you could use it to keep a log, and take pictures. Maybe you are going to store movies on the laptop.

Another way of storing them is to buy a Kindle and download the books onto it. You can pretty much use a Kindle App to download any file onto the Kindle. I'd just recommend trying it and making sure you can read it first.

 

Small electronics that are not plugged into anything will likely survive EMP at least as strong as what it takes to damage a vehicle. Which is some where around 50kv/M.

 

Very appropriate for Windows 8 and above, and if you open a steel trash can there might already be one inside..
