This might be a good question, iron sights coming up. A lot of sights these days do not seem to be very...fine tune able for someone going it with irons alone...

My question would be, what do y'all look for in accurate irons? Especially if you are not running a scope?

Depends if one needs to have FAST Target Aquisition, or best Accuracy at distance....

That's actually a pretty fair question. That said, it is a bit out of place in this thread, so why not start another?

I found the debate over optics to be interesting . I am not a long range shooter and dont claim to be. I started out shooting at 100 yards and under hunting , militia training and target ranges. I started moving the targets out over the last 4 years. I have a Thompson center Icon in 30-06 which is sub 1 inch at 100 yards around 3/4 of an inch with factory ammo. My scope is a Leopold Dimension 3 by 9 by 40 . I can hit a pie plate at 400 yards. at 100 and 200 am pretty deadly. 400 takes a lot of relaxing, a good rest like a sand bag or range rest. Certainly not off hand or kneeling. The longest shot here in our little scenario is about 220 yards. Too many hills, trees and brush for long range shooting here. Average shot on deer is 25 yards. Average shot in a simulated combat situation is under 100 yards with most being under 50 yards. I do own a range finder and spotting scope.

As far as I being a threat ,may be to some one that has proven to be a threat to me and mine, I believe I could hold my own at least 450 -550 yards providing the winds are in my favor .
If I have a spotter 1000 yards is doable , but not practical. (for me) iron sights.( mosen 762/54R )

My nephew spent 6 tours in the middle east. He told me the rifle they feared the most was the Mosin equipped snipers.

I recently bought a scope kit for it , I hated having to remove the ramp rear sights , and I haven't sighted in the scope yet, my concern is that it is such flimsy set up, and in the event, something should go wrong I don't have the rear sight to fall back on during the middle of an event.
Most of my rifles have both scopes and iron sights, both are zeroed in, so that if the scope fails, the iron is right on target.
I prefer scopes due to eyesight , Mine is such , that if I spend much time out side the bright sun light causes me to squint and the lenses cause a stigmatism . I have prescription glasses but they are long sense not applicable ,
So long as i spend most of my time inside and or wearing dark sunglasses when out side, I can maintain decent vision .
Something serious to consider as it seems the UV from the sun is getting more intense, having several pairs of sunglasses is as important to me as all my other preps.
Harbor Freight sells cheap safety sunglasses under $2. or so . I can afford to loose and break them and keep them all over the place ,almost never go out side with out them except at night. So as long as I can maintain my vision I guess I can be as much of a threat as the one attacking me.

The Mosin is basically a Russian made 30-06 Roughly the same ballistics .

Check out the Brassstackers mount. Very sturdy, goes up over the sight so you can use them.

I know this thread is generally about distances within small arms range.

I've been seeing the title over and over in my head. I've reached the conclusion that with modern internet/cellular technology I have a Global range.

    "Nice matters." :)

KF take that pie plate and center it over your chest looking into a mirror. Any shot placed in it will pretty well seal the deal wouldn't it? That's good-rest or not. Most folks I see at a range can't do that consistently, and the ones that can end up having a crowd around us asking us how we can or hear excuses as to why they will never need to shoot that far..

    Good on ya

Just wondering if he mentioned how much his confidence level was raised when he heard the bark of the rifle used by the "Man Above". Inquiring minds?

He always said you never hear the shot that kills you. He and I were talking about AK-47 RIFLES and the effective range. He told me they were more concerned with Taliban snipers using Mosins. He never mentioned the man above but did say our snipers were better than theirs.

Im not a great long distance shooter. out to 200 yards I am as good as the rifle is. After that? I am as good as the rest meaning I need to have something to balance that rifle on . I mean I might hit a man sized target at 400 yards off hand or kneeling or even prone with prone being my best chance. Not out of breath from running or pumped up with adrenelin .

    Prior to optic use:
    200 yards
    10 slow fire standing
    10 rapid fire sitting.
    300 yards
    5 slow fire sitting
    5 slow fire kneeling
    10 rapid fire prone
    500 yards
    10 slow fire prone
Standard course of fire. Don't recall what score was required for expert anymore, but I'm sure there are a few Old Marines that can fill in the blanks.

This discussion so far has focused on Mil Dot/MRAD which is very conducive to the Metric system. There is also MOA which is very conducive to the English/Imperial system that would seem more natural to most US monkeys:

    MRAD
    At 100 M 1 MRAD ~= 10 CM ( ~=4" for us Yanks)
    At 1,000 M 1 MRAD ~= 1M

    MOA:
    At 100 yards 1 MOA ~= 1"
    At 1,000 yards 1 MOA ~= 10"

Given that MOA would seem more natural to us Merkuns for ranging, is there any sort of compelling reason to go MRAD? Do the best scopes, for example, only come with MRAD reticles?
