    Fox news.
I don't know how to move the story here, but if some one else could I'd appreciate it.
But the point I'd like to stress is, readiness in an otherwise comfortable environment.
When I was young and my first hunting trip ,I believed my self to be the superior predator. But after being hunted by a few mountain lions through the years, my mentality is changed.
    A lot more respect.

Quick action from a Hoonah boy saved a fishing party from a charging brown bear on June 18, the Empire has learned through Alaska State Troopers and family members.

It was the first Defense of Life or Property (DLP) killing in the Hoonah area this year, according to trooper spokesperson Megan Peters.

When the attack occurred, Elliot Clark, then 11 years old, was walking through the woods near Game Creek in Port Frederick several miles south of Hoonah. The young outdoorsman was heading to a nearby fishing hole with his uncle, Craig Stoltzfus, Stoltzfus’ father, a cousin and three dogs.

Stoltzfus and Elliot Clark were armed when a brown bear came out of the woods, charging the group head on. The other members of the party were not armed.

Just 17 miles south of where I live... Game Creek is where an old Commune is.... They are the folks that got "Sabrina" the Brown's Cow, and are keeping her... I haven't heard what the Gauge of the Shotgun was, but I suspect it is either a .410 or 28 Gauge for such a young Kid... The barrel in the picture looks like a .410

The Birdshot didn't phase the Bear at ALL, It was the followup BuckShot thru the Nose that got him down, and follow up Slugs that finally killed him... This is a normal Loadout for a Protection Shotty, here in Alaska... Low Base #9 BirdShot up the Spout, and alternating 00Buck and Slugs in the Tube Mag... The kid had pulled the Waterfowl Plug out of the TubeMag the day before....

BT, remember the old Winchester model 63 ad with the kid in the canoe putting his rifle together while a brownie charged?

Sounds like one of those situations where the politically correct "bear pepper spray" would have left someone dead. Good example of the desirable trait of muscle memory and doing your shoot if required as a reaction and not trying to figure things out. Many years ago I had a friend in the USAF ROTC program who was a private pilot and went to pilot training after graduating. He was a very intelligent and throught everything thru. One week into the advanced jet training he had a talk with the instructors and washed himself out of the program. He just couldn't do things automatically and while he was doing ok in the program, he realized it was just a matter of time until he killed himself and perhaps others while he was trying to figure out how to react. Rifle on shoulder in sling, safety on, not totally aware of surroundings, reaction time to first shot may well be longer than the time it takes the bear to attack from cover and kill you.

Pretty remote - even for Alaska.
Game Creek is a census-designated place (CDP) on Chichagof Island in Hoonah-Angoon Census Area, Alaska, United States. The population was 18 at the 2010 census,[1] down from 35 at the 2000 census.

As of the census of 2000, there were 35 people, 10 households, and 7 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 7.1 people per square mile (2.8/km²). There were 10 housing units at an average density of 2.0/sq mi (0.8/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 88.57% White, and 11.43% from two or more races.

Not as "Remote" as BrownTown (Salt Lake Bay) 12 Miles further up Port Frederic, and there is a Road from Hoonah to the Game Creek Commune... As they age, the population has dropped, and few new members have taken their place.... I don't know any of these folks, but we have Friends in common. I do know the Trooper (Trooper Andy) who did the investigation of the Safety of Life & Property Taking of Wildlife... as he is our Tooper over here as well... A Good Friend, and straight up Guy... The kid did good....
