Took the dogs for a forest walk today after work & ended up with this About 2 kg of Chanterelles and 4 liters of blairs. (Wild Scottish blueberries)
We have a number of upickit blueberry farms in the immediate area. Whether or not those wild berries are the same thing, I do not know, but I do know that the farmers will not allow using the scoops in their field, too much damage to the bushes.
Blairs are a type of wild blueberries but maybe a bit tart compared to wild US blueberries that ive had.. absilute PITA to pick by hand.. it literally takes forever to get even a small amount (& kills your back) Well chuffed with the berry picker though.. was able to get a decent amount without spending all day. The Chant's were a bonus, I dident know they were growing in that area and this is a bit early really so wasnt exspecting to see them.
Growing up, our woods were filled with wild blueberries. I can remember being 5 Y/o or so and my mother sending me down into the woods early in the morning with a galvanized bucket for picking. When I got home, she would make us blueberry pancakes for lunch and a blueberry pie later. The berries were very small and it took all morning to fill the pail. Of course, only half of the pickin made it into the bucket. I still eat berries as if they were candy.
Some folks in this area use those scoops to harvest Huckleberries.. Yes, they do tear up the bush's..
Mom has her own bushes so it would make it easier for her to harvest. I think spending half the day picking is too much for her.
I'd have to get to my Huckleberries before the bears. They have a built in berry scoop!! Nice haul, @runswithdogs
I've never had any blueberries nor service berries make it home from a picking session. There is evidence that it took place due to purple colored lips and fingers but that's about it.
I've heard the names of blueberries and hucklberries used interchangably and until ten minutes ago, I thought they were the same. They ain't, and with some varieties, it'll take a horticulturist to tell the difference. All this from trying to find Blairs that @runswithdogs picks. Evidently they are not the same as @RightHand remembers. NOW i AM confused ----
Interesting - they are called berry combs: Amazon.com: berry comb Kitchen Craft Large Fruit & Berry Picker Harvesting Scoop / Dead Heading Tool | eBay
Id guess around 25-30 minutes with the picker. Probably be faster next time as there should be a lot more ripe berries. By hand?.. I dread to think, all day probably.
Last meal ... Rice noodle ramen with last of the chanterelles, Crispy pork rib, Lobster, Prawns etc....
