Depends on how long they remain viable to me.... MRE's tend to last a long time on the shelf...

There is a low cost semi-MRE called A-packs sold by AmeriQual out of Evansville Indiana, a defense contractor that makes regular issue MREs for military. I have eaten these and they weren't bad. Include heaters too.
Modest Bulk (like about a pallet worth) or state contract price is something like $60 per case (had reason to get quotes a couple years ago) and retailers will obviously sell above that but you have a good idea how much the shipping and mark-up is if you buy. I've known folks who get a group order and someone drives their pickup or van to Evansville and pick them up. I have seen several online prepper stores selling these.

    Disaster Relief – AmeriQual

Common stock item with state DHS, FEMA, etc.

Shelf life is temperature dependent. Keep cool and its like at least 5 years as I vaguely recall (without going out to shop and check side of box).

I would look for the Brit Rat Packs!!! I don't know if they are even available state side, or if the Brits will even sell them to the U.S. but they were some of the best long term survival type foods I have ever eaten. I miss the 80's era MRE's I think they were better then the newer versions with less salt and other crap, and they tasted pretty good and didn't back you up like the newer ones do!
When the Mil went looking for newer options, I think they really did a disservice selecting the new versions, not every one likes or wants gourmet type meals, most like the basics, and we don't like vegetarian ether!!!

Amazon already sells microwave pouched meals. I have ordered them and they are okay. Companies include Campbells and Pace.
They also carry the Hormel Completes.
    Various canned goods too.
And they have some MRE products available, but prices are high.

Yup and their Yoders Bacon is the highest price of any I've seen.

And I suspect this group is from Yoders, just a different label, but then their's is a entertainment item. So it is really High On The Hog.

I think if Amazon gets into production and distribution of MRE's they are going to get a lot better, cheaper and last longer.
Without government purchasing guidelines and stipulations, private enterprise will improve the product and do it for less. I wish they had their own line of freeze dried and dehydrated foods.

People don't cook anymore and going out to eat is expensive and boring after a while. I see more and more heat and serve meals at the grocery store and less and less product that has to be "cooked". Shipping and storage will dictate it be packaged for long term so I think it will fly off the shelf if it taste good and is reasonably priced.

Kind of OT but I have really noticed this trend in the farm to fork business. Sales of raw ingredients have been in steady decline for the last 8 years. Sales of Value added ready to eat and heat and serve products have steadily been going up at a equal rate of the raw products decline. LOL in 20 years it will be trendy to cook again.

That's why so many will starve. They don't know how to cook it, much less grow it or kill and skin it. I've been teaching my teenage step daughter to cook, one reciepe at a time. She is about to go out on her on and didn't have a clue.

A few years ago I took a group of scouts on a campout. One of the boys was 12 years old and he HAD NEVER cracked an egg open before. I could scarcely believe it.

Sorry to say but you now have generations that have never boiled beans or made a loaf of bread aka Bannock Bread. All two items Boy Scouts use to do.

A lot of things are being irradiated in their packaging .
The machine is expensive ,but the result is surprisingly effective .
Often thought it would be a great idea to own the machine and provide the service to those that can food and pack meat .
It doesn't matter if it is in a can or a bag ,the radiation passes right through.
So long as the packaging is secure the contents remains bacteria free .
I worked for A vascular , and all work after packaging ,passed through this process before it left the property. though the greatest care is taken in manufacturing ,this last process guaranteed purity.
I think I prefer this process to any thing microwaved .

My 59 year old little sister never really learned to cook. I always helped Dad cook the meat (he likex grilling), smoke meat, make sausage, clean and cook game and fish, etc. Nowadays, I admit to being a bit lazy, and using more processed and "Ready-To-Eat" products. But once in awhile, I fire up the grill, the stove or the crockpot.
Little Sister and BIL do the fast food runs.
I do have several packs of MRE entrees, never order the full cases. Don't need the frufru.

I have only ever found one MRE flavor I hate - "Beef in Jamaica Sauce". That is truly disgusting.

There are folks who see food irradiation as being in the same class of issues as those related to the GMO controversy.

Irradiated foods must be labeled as such....

    Why?
The role of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in determining whether foods may be irradiated in this country stems from the passage, in 1958, of the Food Additives Amendment to the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (FD&C Act).(1) In that legislation, Congress explicitly defined a source of radiation as a food additive. In a report accompanying the legislation, Congress explicitly stated: "Sources of radiation (including radioactive isotopes, particle accelerators, and X-ray machines) intended for use in processing food are included in the term ‘food additive' as defined in this legislation". The Food Additives Amendment also provides that a food is adulterated (that is, it cannot be marketed legally) if it has been intentionally irradiated, unless the irradiation is carried out in conformity with a regulation prescribing safe conditions of use. Note here that the statute does not define the form of energy - radiation - or the process - irradiation - as an additive, but the equipment used to irradiate the food. Note also that the specific and explicit adulteration provision for irradiated foods is unlike that for foods which are adulterated because they contain a food additive that is unsafe within the meaning of the Act. Clearly, no one expected a food to contain a source of radiation. I mention this arcane legislative history to highlight the common misunderstanding that the statute somehow foolishly considers irradiation to be an additive rather than a process. As mentioned above, the bill report refers to sources of radiation used to process food.
