Several years ago my boss and good friend was walking his wife's doberman pincer Jake.
For some unknown reason while on the walk Jake became stubborn and resistant to commands and turned on my friend. I am to got going to guess at Jakes weight but he was the biggest doberman I had ever seen in my life , and as a kid we had several in our family . he was easily twice the size of the normal dobe .
My friend weighing about 130 lbs landed on his back on the ground with the dog on top of him in full control and my friends arm in his mouth clamped down hard .several stitches and surgery required.
Fortunately he was only about 300 feet from the house and his wife heard the yelling and commotion came out to see what was going on, and then ran back into the house and got a gun .
By this time a neighbor came on scene and she had the neighbor shoot the dog .
All this time , my friend fighting for his life, forgot about the fixed blade knife on his hip .
I have been attacked by dogs in the past but not this severely ,but to say this.
Often times we cary tools for a job and forget them in a crisis.
I have had plenty of wild life encounters and instinctively I ready my self to meet the challenge but it takes playing the scenario over an over in your mind "How are you going to deal with actually being mounted on by a predator ? I've had a big cat jump in the trail just in front of me by a few feet, and others stalking just above me on the hill side.
Had the event been with contact ,I assume that my rifle might be knocked out of my hand, and my side arm and knife be my alternative resources with out any time to think about it.
A Sheriff teaches the warrior mentality that must be a part of ones survival package, the will to take action, like muscle memory, and not give the enemy any idea your afraid , though your truly are.
I've faced down a lot of critters in my lifetime, with narrow eye and a growl that means business.
Predators narrow the eye, prey open wide .
In spite of what people say, animals don't read the instructions, and do what ever they want.

I believe that is called "PANIC", and hopefully the adrenaline kicks in until you recall why you brought the tool with you.

Relationship with a dog needs to be based on a long series of repeated behaviors in which the pooch develops a comfortable trust in your consistency as the master. The dog regards you as one of the same "family pack," but it should regard itself as "beta" to your "alpha" position within the pack. There was something askew about the relationship between your boss and his wife's dog that had not been "settled yet" (at least for that particular Doberman's personality) when they went for that walk.

When walking our dog around the neighborhood, I have a stout wooden walking stick, and a quickly deployable folding hunting knife. That's my minimal armament. Usually, I carry more. That is not for use against my dog, but against any hostile strays that approach with violent intent.

Try a pack of P.O. wild hogs.
First they try to cut your legs out from under you, Then they go for your guts!

Male Dobermans need to be mounted repetitively as they grow in strength and intelligence. It is only natural that they feel the urge to become the alpha male as they grow. Never feed a male doberman until after they have witnessed all your family members eating. The order in which the pack is feed is the pecking order, consistently remind Male Dobermans that they are at the end of the food chain and many dominance related troubles shall be avoided, JMHO.

I'm moving to a place with some land, probably going to at least carry my 6 shooter 22lr and and survival knife.
With it I can hit a 4 inch circle 18 out of 18 times from a rest.
Or grand dad's 9 shot DA 22lr if I can get it to not shoot so low. 4 inches low at 10m.
They both shoot groups about the same just the 9 shot it way way low at 25m.

Thing is on a surprise attack I believe that it is important to have a plan of action even practice if you have to with a rubber knife.
No one wants to be attacked with out warning , and that's the trouble with training ,unless it's live and unpredictable .
We laugh at Jok klusoe (pink panther) and his man servant, doing attacks in his home, but the fact of the matter is most attacks are ambush. Bear have waited around the corner of a river bend for the unsuspecting fisherman.
People for that matter have accidentally stepped on bear curled up in a hollow in the ground.
People step on rattlers ,and walk into dens accidentally .
Some times being side tracked with one issue another is on our face. Life is not fair. keep that in mind .

May I just remind that humans are at best ambush predators, please contemplate this the next time you are sitting in your deer stand! How much warning do you give "BAMBI"!

The only people who think hunting is cruel obviously have no idea where their food really comes from.

They have already done studies the prove plants have some sort of feelings responding to music and other forms of attention both human and environmental stimuli .
So if you think that eating a plant is not killing something, your wrong .
Our bodies live on living tissue, and eating dead or stale tissue is not food, and the body cannot process it well, and ends up as sludge, hence the illnesses we suffer with clogged arteries blocking the nutrients to the various organs in our bodies.
    I digress,
Man is an aggressor, like it or not, to live we must consume living things. What you don't eat is consumed by other things needing that living tissue .
Learning how to be aggressive in a traumatic event takes action beyond feelings . Though I have been scared , I could not let it show, both in human conflict and with animals .
It takes a level of courage to face a battle brought on you , it takes a whole nother level of courage to wade into some one else's battle, like that more of a police man than a soldier . not discounting the heroism of soldiers but they operate under orders, a police man chooses to get involved.
In a survival atmosphere, there will be events that will test your metal . Just like the knife you choose to sustain your life ,reliable steel and dependable edge , people/situations and attacks on one's self and others will expose to ourselves the material we are really made of.

Tom Sanders has a short book on survival of a dog attack that gives some insight on suggested ways to protect your self... not the best but the price is right... $1.45 ( I notice that the same book seems to have an alternative author a Tim Robinson....) BUy through the SM and $$$ comes back home....;)

I think they generally know where it comes from...just that they prefer not to be reminded....they prefer to outsource the yucky processes of slaughtering, skinning, gutting and butchering for others to do....distance also helps salve ethical consciences.

In some states (NC) if you shoot an animal on your land you may be sued and fined unless you your family etc. was attacked livestock protection may not be a defense... if you have to put an animal remember the three S's shoot shovel and shut-up unless someone is bitten. I had a fellow VFD member who was fined $250.00 for killing a og that got in his chicken yard and started killing his flock. He killed the animal and took the dog back to the owner to be disposed of and to inform him of the status of the dog. He was fined and later sued by the owner (a rather well connected individual whose pet wouldn't hurt a fly...) he won the suit but had to pay lawyer fees...

    YMMV

I think feeding the owner, to the dog that wouldn't hurt a fly might be a viable option in a PAW environment.:sneaky:

It is likely that people that can't afford to feed their animals will first be tuning them loose to fend for themselves, culturally incapable of killing and dressing game, especially "Spot" or "Fluffy".
Rule one, you don't name your food.
Some animals that are capable of turning feral can be re-domesticated, but it is a long patient process, others will not be re domesticated, preferring the wild .
Cats would be the hardest. IMO
Remember that the meat will reflect what the animal ate. so the longer an animal has been eating meat the more wild it will taste. animals that are fed grains and vegetables, will taste more like beef.
Ideally if conditions allow , capture and observe and culture feed, till needed , all animals .

You are probably right....all the more reason to become a proficient archer....you can recycle arrows and bolts.....ammo will become a scarce resource, and shouldn't be wasted on vermin except in defence of life and limb....mainly one's own.
