Well hello!

Hi all.

I've just signed up and haven't had much of a chance to scope the place first.
My plans for the future involve getting as far from the grid as I can. Growing up in London (England) and only ever having lived in cities, I guess would make me a total newbie.
If been researching one and off for years but I'm finally getting around to making a start.

What I'd love is to start an off the grid community of a handful of people all working together to sustain each other. Hard work doesn't scare me.

I'm here to talk to like minded folk and learn. Maybe even teach but certainly share ideas. Perhaps even get chatting to future members of my community.

For now. I'm just say hi.

 

You could always move to a Native Indian Reserve to see how well it works.

Welcome aboard anyway - lots to learn here and more than a couple good people to make friends with.

*hint* - don't try and sell anything until you have +2000 posts/likes and several years of service...

 

Welcome to the monkey tree EL-SKiN.......I've declined to respond to the poll at the top of the thread....I'd be an eccentric fit in any community...even were I welcomed. A casual reading of threads that I post to in this community, would be ample evidence of that.

Check out the site's Code of Conduct, and have a wander through the various forums. We do have a very comprehensive library of resources on a wide range of topics...take some time to have a browse through them.

Be aware that most of the site membership tends towards conservatism, though I dare say that there are probably some crypto 'liberals' lurking subversively about, or masquerading under 'false colours'.

 

Welcome to the Monkey @EL-SKiN. I would join an off-grid community but I would not pool my resources. I always wonder how people would define an off-grid community. If they all stay in the same housing, eat meals together then I have no interest but a community that leans towards off-grid life style gardens, wells, wind etc then I think it would be something I would consider.

 

Welcome to the monkey... I think that many would not really be interested at this time... Most have a location and friends already in place... Some are not off grid but Survival is more an art than science with a few exceptions... ( what works for one may not work for another...)

And if you have too have a resident contrarian Chell is not a bad sort....

 

Hi Motomom34. When I talk about an off the grid community I am certainly not picturing sharing meals or a living space. Everyone would have their own home and garden but there would be communal growing areas for producing larger amounts of the essentials. Power would be communal. Picture a self sufficient small town and you'll, more or less, be seeing what I see.

Thanks. I'll keep the conservativism in mind. For me it would be most helpful if politics could just keep out of it. I have no political motivation in what I am planning. It all just stems from my desire to not "need" other people around. I want to want people, not need them.

 

An admirable sentiment, EL, I was just giving you a heads up....some folk here are so easily triggered.

While your dream is admirable it is difficult to implement given the human condition, but I wish you the best of luck. Perhaps you will succeed where so many others have fallen short.

 

I like the sound of his community but I believe it would be hard to find a state that gives people the freedom to build such a place. States seem to want to be involved and get their money. So do you have a place picked out @EL-SKiN?

 

I know of a place in Tenn that was well on it's way, but fell apart because of the aforementioned human condition..

 

Property tax is an issue here in the UK too. I don't have a place picked out, no. Thought has gone into ideal locations but it's based, so far, mostly on climate and initial costs of property (land mostly, I intend to build my own home). I don't doubt that regulations will make things as difficult as possible but as long as they don't make it impossible I won't have to resort to plan b.

 

Yes, thanks ghrit. I'm intending starting a thread. Currently doing my usual 'put too much thought into it' thing. One will be started soon. Mostly I'm here to learn from the existing threads though. A lot of interesting and helpful stuff on here.

 

As I understand it sweden has very similar rules. Seems to be a recurring theme that the colder a place is the more freedom you are granted.

I'll maybe have to look for/start a thread about cold weather farming. Guessing being off the grid somewhere like alaska pretty much means you only eat what the land has to offer.
