Knitty Titties

Here is the story of a woman who knits prosthetic breasts for women who don't wish to have a medical prosthesis surgically implanted consequent to a mastectomy. Back in the day of Tennessee William's play, 'The Glass Magerie' they were called 'gay deceivers' (though gay in those days meant something different than what it means these days).

Different sizes are catered for...the knitted knockers include nipples. (y)

Sounds like a suitable low tech solution for some aspects of the problem.

Probably more for the self esteem, and aesthetic value of the wearer than anything else I guess...It is probably of value to others in social situation who may feel uncomfortably distracted by the asymmetrical appearance of the woman standing in front of them....

    Good for her!
Breast cancer is one of the charities that I always donate to. It is a self esteem issue for many women Chel. There is nothing more personal than having one's manhood/womanhood cut away. Some folks don't react that way, but many do. The oilfield workers were a big supporter of this cause, at least in the areas I worked. Every now and then I'd hear some young kid smart off with a wisecrack to which I'd had a simple reply
"How manly would you feel if you had to go the rest of your life without yer balls-even though we all know yer still waitin' on them to drop.." They would behave after that.

Sometimes the getting of wisdom by the young comes from a wise retort to a wise crack....I know that is one way I actually became wise beyond my years. (y)

I think I would have a more favorable thoughts on the subject if they were not referred to as "knitty titties or knitted knockers". Maybe I am up-tight on the verbiage because those seem like male references to breasts. Yes, someone in my family had a mastectomy and had I said, "Grandma you should get a set of knitty titties", I am certain I would have gotten smacked. Maybe women in Australia refer to their body parts in that manner.

I take your point, Motomom....my mother in law had a radical mastectomy, and I certainly didn't raise that subject with her. I think some women aren't so precious about it, certainly not the women in the knitting group that I hang around with. Oddly, I was asked last weekend what charity I thought the group might support next, now that winter is coming to a close....I think I have an answer for them now. I think that they might just go for it.

Sorry if I'm somewhat unrepentant...but sometimes click bait grabs a greater audience by being "suggestive" ;)

Here's a shout out to knittedknockers org, apparently it is an American Organisation. Make A Knocker the web page includes YouTube tutorials and patterns.....get knitting for a great cause.

I'm not sure that willy warmers will get the same kind of click bait response from the women as knitty titties might from men....though I guess it could be tried....:D

This one is strictly for Republicans.....

I do see your point, and it is a valid one for many women I'm sure. Some not so much, as long as they raise awareness.

Not to be insensitive, but wouldn't a water balloon be a more accurate by shape and weight prosthetic for the person ?

Are titties male verbiage? I did not know that, they have always just been tit or titties around here both sexes. I did not realize that it would be considered male verbiage anywhere. I offer my most sincere apologies to anyone that I may have offended by admiring their titties and commenting. Please do not be reluctant to advise me of the appropriate verbiage, bosom seems so archaic while others seem rude and breasts are confusing, being so darned ambiguous...just pick a few and put a check-mark by them and I'll be sure to ad them to my lexicon. This little song contains most of the ones I have heard: Thank you

Somehow bazookas missed the cut, but I suppose the word didn't quite fit the rhyming scheme. Were you inspired to write that previously, and will it become part of your singing repertoire?

No, but the members of the group have a similar sense of adventure, and sense of community service. They also have a nice sense of humour and much laughing is had when we get together. Some of the humour is quite risqué.

That would probably more closely approximate the weight, feel and give of a real breast, but its a couple of pounds of unnecessary weight hanging from one's neck, and water balloons have a limited life, and are prone to spillage when pricked. Maybe a knitted derringer holster in the shape of a breast might be an option for 2A wimmin???

I can't say that I wrote that song, it popped up when I googled synonyms for bosoms. BTW, with the exception of that black woman singing the national anthem at a ball-game, it is not considered generally acceptable for a woman to expose her bosoms in public, but is it ok to mention them? They can pretty much expose most of them except for the nipples...can I say nipples in polite conversation? Or should I use N-word?

As some one who has seen the horrors of a Mastectomy first hand, I can fully understand the feelings that follow, and it goes A LOT deeper then us menfolk ever thought! Put your selves in a woman's shoes, she is informed during a check that she has a lump, and after several tests ( which are very painful) she is informed that she now has cancer and it's malignant requiring removal of the entire breast! Imagine the horror being told you are about to loose an important part of your body, specifically, a part that is so very important for child rearing, and even more so, the beauty and self image! Imagine the thoughts going through her head, Will my husband be repulsed by me, will he ever want to make love with me again, how will I ever nurse my children, what will people think of me if they find out, or worse, ever see a difference in my appearance, can I ever wear clothing I like again, can I ever go to the beach and enjoy the sun in a swim suit or bikini!!! Step back a few years, women that went through this were not so lucky, the doctors cut very deeply, and the results were horrible to both appearance and mental state! I know an Older lady who had a double just after getting divorced, and for years and years, she refused to even date, and when she finally started, it would end pretty quickly, probably about the time intimacy was discussed, to this day, she is still alone with her grief and internal suffering over what she has lost and what she thinks a man might think if he ever found out her secret! IMAGINE all that if you Can

Sorry for the downer, this was a good thread about people that care enough to do something for some one who is suffering! It just hit a little too close to home for me!

No need to apologise, Ura-Kai, You posted without ill intent, and it's as well that folk are aware of the psychological and social impacts that such life saving interventions have on the person who is experiencing them. Losing the gift of intimacy is for many people, a terrible loss, and the seemingly improbability of regaining it can be a depressingly hard burden to carry for some. The good news is that some do find their way out of that darkness to live happy fulfilling lives.

Sometimes, a woman is lucky enough to have a man who will stand by her, no matter what....case in point, Turia Pitt, a model, and ultra marathon runner who was horrifically burnt, whilst competing in an ultra marathon race some years ago...

Some folk have more than their fair share of life's travails, through no fault of their own...it helps to be resilient in dealing with them. Most humans are generally endowed with a sufficiently adequate quanta of resilience, but folk, particularly those who are faced with adversity are capable extending that reserve.

Your post Ura-Kai was very apt...being able to empathise, more so than just sympathise is an important part of supporting women who have had a mastectomy. (y)(y)(y)

Old English titt "teat, nipple, breast" (a variant of teat). But the modern slang tits (plural), attested from 1928, seems to be a recent reinvention, used without awareness of the original form, from teat or from dialectal and nursery diminutive variant titties

IM kinda with @Motomom34 on this one.... a breast is not a 'tit' or a 'teat' those are on cows and other livestock.

Nomenclature aside, I thought the idea was interesting but to be honest the hardest part of a mastectomy is 1) the scars it leaves, 2) if you only remove one breasts the lopsidedness is difficult to deal with, it would surprise you how much difference a balances set of breasts (or no breasts) makes for just walking around.
