    Hi there,

I'm starting a new job in the social media department soon for a company dedicated to off grid living, and before I start I’d really like to find out how best to engage with and serve the community.

So I’m posting on here to find out what you guys would like to see in the online content from a company such as ours.

Do you like seeing a lot of posts giving advice about new techniques and technology?

Or do you just prefer to hear about stories of other people’s experiences?

What would be the most important things you would expect from an off grid site?

Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated so please don’t hesitate to reply!

    Thanks so much,

    J

I prefer to only be spammed with offers from my direct friends and not 455|-|0|_35 who post profit-driven messages as their first post when joining a new online forum.
Most members here are 50+ and don't really know what social media is nor care aboot what your company wants to data-harvest from us in order to better improve your profit margin.
Majority of users here aren't looking for a better place to buy stuff - especially from wandering merchants.
If this forum was a house there would be a NO SOLICITING sign outside - unless you pay the site for permission.
Please take your business elsewhere for market research.
    This is my personal opinion.

A good balance is, IMHO, the best way to go.
Personal stories, How To articles, new tech and gear, maybe some "old school" historical articles. A listing of web URLs for equipment, services, supplies, etc.

Please don't keep trying to re invent the wheel. I am more likely to look at a 30 year old how to on gunsmithing, which went from film to dvd to u-tube, and is very well done and full of information than the latest party flick from Hollywood. YMMV

To echo what @Dunerunner said, the best way to determine what the community wants, any community, is to become a part of the community.

Attempting to cash in on something because it is hot but not having any real desire to engage in whatever that thing is, is a sure fire path to long term failure.

If you join the community, you will find out what is important to us, and most important is our privacy and personal security... without being "weird" about it. Until then, please understand that you will be met with indifference, more than a bit of scorn, and in some cases outright hostility because worse than an interloper, you appear as someone trting to take advantage of a situation and or a set of people...a community as it were, that is fiercely protective of its own.

I'm going to chance it and take your request seriously.

If you really want to find out what "we people" like, then your best option is to become a regular member, participate in discussions, and basically act like a normal human being. From there you will get the vibe of the place.

You come off as kind of like a used car salesman...friendly, outgoing, and acting like my buddy...but I know there are ulterior motives and you're not really on my side.

To directly answer your question, I would like to see content created by (or at least with input from) subject matter experts who actually do what they are talking about. Clickbait and infomercials thinly disguised as "content" are easily outed. We may be simple, but we aint dumb.

By the way, folks like you show up here fairly regularly: Someone is writing a book, producing a reality TV show, internet media startup, or some such hustle. Cold-calling internet forums is not at all an original idea.

    Good luck on your project.

Thread locked pending other posts in specific areas. This is phishing, I believe. If you want to open a dialog with them, go to PM.
