FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Emporia, KS -- March 16, 2007 -- Menu Foods, Emporia, Kansas, is initiating a North American recall of dog and cat food manufactured in its "cuts and gravy" format between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. There has been a small number of reported instances of cats and dogs in the United States (none in Canada) becoming sick from kidney failure after eating the affected products. There have been approximately ten deaths reported.

Consumers who have product which is being recalled should stop using it and return it to Menu Foods in accordance with the procedure found at www.menufoods.com/recall. This procedure will be available from 6 a.m. Saturday March 17, 2007. If your dog or cat is showing any signs of kidney failure, consult your veterinarian.

The recall includes an extensive list of brand names and lot numbers. In order to determine whether cat and dog food is subject to recall, consumers should refer to the comprehensive list of products at www.menufoods.com/recall. This list of products will be available from 6 a.m. Saturday March 17, 2007.

Menu Foods voluntarily recalled the products after learning of complaints of vomiting and renal failure in dogs and cats following their consumption of product produced between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. FDA has been apprised of this action.

Following feedings of the product, some cats and dogs refused further feedings, while others exhibited signs of renal failure (signs of renal failure include loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting) and others died from renal failure. Menu Foods has undertaken extensive testing of the products in question, employing both internal and external resources, but to date has been unable to confirm any causal relationship to our product. Specifically, tests of some affected products have not revealed the cause of sickness, and testing will continue until a better understanding of the facts has been achieved.

Menu's products are distributed to supermarkets, pet specialty stores and mass merchandisers across the United States. It can best be identified by reference to the list of products found at www.menufoods.com/recall. This list of products will be available from 6 a.m. Saturday March 17, 2007.

Menu Foods is notifying its customers by telephone and mail and is arranging for the return of all recalled products. The products were distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico.

While the number of complaints has been relatively small, Menu Foods is taking this proactive step out of an abundance of caution, because the health and well-being of pets is paramount to Menu Foods.

Consumers with questions may contact Menu Foods at 1-800-551-7392.

I'm fairly certain the manufacturer creates different products according to brand formulas.

Among the weighing systems I used to sell were batch scales and one of our customers was a company who produced candy. Many common candies were produced by the same producer to formulas supplied by the purchasing company.

I watched my dog eat her own dump yesterday. I threw up. Needless to say, I would be suprised if there is anything other than rat poison that could cause this simply because dogs are disgusting creatures who will eat anything, roll in dead animals, and eat carrion. I think I am gonna be sick

We use only Diamond dog food so no prob..... Iams is evil anyway- nobody should use it, they torture poor little beagles in testing facilities.

That's not normal behavior.... somethings wrong. Top 6 reasons dogs eat poo.
    1. A dog with a physical problem that causes excessive hunger, pain, or other sensations.
    2. A dog who is not getting enough to eat or is going too long between meals.
    3. A dog with intestinal parasites or other condition that creates blood or other fecal changes .
    4. Some dogs develop a mental connection that they will be punished if their humans find them in the same room with feces.
    5. Boredom.
    6. Separation anxiety
My dog not only wouldn't eat poo, but won't even walk near it. He won't even hold a meaty steakbone with his paws because he doesn't want to get his paws "icky". He prefers for us to hold it for him while he chews.

The pet deaths led to a recall of 60 million cans and pouches of pet food produced by Menu Foods and sold throughout North America under 95 brand names. There have been several reports of kidney failure in pets that ate the recalled brands, and the company has confirmed the deaths of 15 cats and one dog.
Menu Foods last week recalled "cuts and gravy" style dog and cat food. The recall sparked concern among pet owners across North America. It includes food sold under store brands carried by Wal-Mart, Kroger, Safeway and other large retailers, as well as private labels such as Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba.
Menu Foods is majority owned by Menu Foods Income Fund of Streetsville. The company also makes foods for zoo cats, but those products are unaffected by the recall.
The company's chief executive and president said Menu Foods delayed announcing the recall until it could confirm that the animals had eaten its product before dying. Two earlier complaints from consumers whose cats had died involved animals that lived outside or had access to a garage, which left open the possibility they had been poisoned by something other than contaminated food, he said.
Menu Foods planned a media teleconference for later Friday, a spokesman said.
A spokesman for New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo said he was not aware of any criminal investigation involving the tainted food. FBI spokesman Paul Holstein in Albany said Friday he was not aware of any FBI involvement in the case.
"I don't know where we'll go from here," he said.
A complete list of the recalled products along with product codes, descriptions and production dates was posted online by Menu Foods and is available at http://tinyurl.com/2pn6mm. The company also designated two phone numbers that pet owners could call for information: (866) 463-6738 and (866) 895-2708.

Might want to check it for a vitamin/protein deficiency, Dogs do that when they need more for their system.
A food switch might be in order.
