A plague outbreak in Madagascar has infected 1,192 people since August, with 124 deaths, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and Madagascar’s National Bureau of Risk Management and Disaster reported on Monday.

The majority of cases, 67%, were the pneumonic form of the disease, which can spread from person to person.

Plague is caused by infection with the bacterium Yersinia pestis and is typically spread through the bite of infected fleas, frequently carried by rats, causing bubonic plague. Symptoms include painful, swollen lymph nodes, called bubos, as well as fever, chills and coughing.

Pneumonic plague is more virulent or damaging and is an advanced form characterized by a severe lung infection that can be transmitted from person to person via airborne droplets such as through coughing or sneezing, for example. The incubation period is short, and an infected person may die within 12 to 24 hours.

Both forms can be treated with antibiotics, making early detection a priority.

Of Madagascar’s 114 districts, 40 have reported cases of pneumonic plague and less than 30% of people who have had contact with cases can be traced, according to the UN office. Those who’ve been in contact might need treatment themselves and may pose further risk of spreading the infection.

Cases have been reported in at least 10 cities, including the the larger, more populated, cities of Antananarivo and Toamasina.

But 780 individuals have been cured of their infection since August 1 and six of the affected districts have not reported new cases for 15 days, the UN report states.

Despite the increase in numbers, the trend has been relatively stable, a World Health Organization representative told CNN.

Dr. Charlotte Ndiaye, WHO representative in Madagascar, added that about half the deaths are occurring in the community, not health centers, according to government figures, which demonstrates that more work needs to be done to help people understand that treatment is available, and they need to go to health services as quickly as possible.

Plague is endemic to Madagascar, with an estimated 400 cases reported there every year, mostly the bubonic variety, but the current outbreak has affected more areas and started earlier than usual.

It’s also unusual for large urban areas to be affected, as they have been this year, the WHO previously told CNN.

The current outbreak began after the death of a man in the central highlands of the country — a plague-endemic area — after which the Ministry of Public Health began investigating and tracing his contacts, according to the WHO.

The epidemic has garnered national and international control efforts.

Gyms are great way to get sick, say doctors

Eight health centers have been designated by WHO to manage plague cases and alleviate the burden on hospitals and health clinics. Last week the International Federation of Red Cross also announced the deployment of a treatment center in the country.

The federation's Secretary General Elhadj As Sy called for global support and launched an emergency appeal for around $5.5 million last week.

WHO has also provided the medications to treat up to 5,000 people and protect 100,000 people who may have been in contact with infected individuals. Both organizations have trained and mobilized thousands of volunteers.

Protocols are also being proposed for safe burial practices to ensure maximum safety and protection from infection.

Public schools are closed and the government has forbidden public gatherings, according to the Red Cross.

The risk of further spread nationally remains very high, WHO stated in its most recent situation report, and risk of regional spread is moderate due to neighboring islands and southern and east African countries.

Samples from patients in Seychelles suspected to be ill with pneumonic plague tested negative, the WHO reported Tuesday.

"The risk of international spread is low, because generally, people with plague are too sick to travel," Ndiaye told CNN in a previous report.

She explained WHO is working closely with Madagascar's airport authorities to ensure control measures -- such as temperature checks and medical teams -- are in place at airports and ports to prevent the spread of infection outside the country.

    How is your preparedness.....
Have you addressed bio/disease topics with supplies for protection of you and yours. Do you have the means to clean up after someone with comes in contact with you that has an obvious disease/issue. Do you know how to properly dispose of waste, liquids and such to minimize exposure to your group.....
    Food for thought. ;)

Yes, and no! There are things you can do to lessen your risks, and there are things you need to do to lessen effects after exposure should you come in contact. Most published methods will suffice in most situations!

Only masks and gloves. I have brewing chemicals for sanitation, SaniClean, StarSan, bleach, Lysol and insecticides, but nothing with respect to antibiotics.

Errrrrr....like DR we have some masks and gloves but hopefully living in the country would give us a 'stand off' edge also. I do have a lot of antibiotics but...not sure which one to take for that and it sounds like real nasty stuff. So, that does bring up a point...

They use to make a book that told you what medications were good for what...I think it was called a Physician's Desk Reference (PDR). Can anyone elaborate or recommend or even shed some light?

You have a real benefit if you live in a cold climate, most of these bugs need warm and moist to be nasty, and the colder the AO, the better. There are guides through the W.H.O. and i think you can still access the C.D.C. compendium, if not, I'm not quite sure. A good country Doc. Might be willing to help you find the book(s)you need!
Bleach, Vinager, Alcohol, iodine, and Hydrogen peroxide, are your best tools, and steam if you can generate enough and get it hot enough. After that, good antibiotics with penicillin being about the best you can do!
There are several tinticures you can make with plants and tree bark combined with the alcohol, and or salt, or borax, and in certain instances iodine, to make a barrier against these, or for exposure treatment!

thieves oil blend is something yo might want to keep in stock.Ive been using it for years now. I use it to guard against cold & flu etc (ultrasonic mister ) but it was originally used for Bubonic plague. Haven't been sick once when using it even though we get plenty of sick clients coming in & coughing all over our shop :cautious:

The Physician's Desk Reference is available on Amazon and if you are willing to go back a few years for an older version you can get it for ~$20. There are other titles to look for including The Merck Manual and The PDR Pocket Guide To Prescription Drugs, which is smaller, paperback, and under $10.

Don't forget alcholoides and coiadial silver in your daily routine. Alcholoides have proven to be extremely effective at preventing bugs from getting you. And it even has major advantages against cancers.

I am pretty satisfied with the results of colloidal silver , to rely on it for most of the antibiotic needs .

@Ura-Ki "Don't forget alcholoides and colloidal silver..."
I know you guys got much better medical training than us but I am still, even after watching Utubes and etc., not convinced this truly works. Care to elaborate? Really, it needs a separate post. (note: I imagine it has been done in the past but anything two days old in our modern world is out of date)

@arleigh "I am pretty satisfied with the results of colloidal silver..."
Again, we are all ears and truly believe a honest and open discussion should be put forward. For example, all the crap on forums (internet) concerning the wonder of using fish antibiotics, ready available in the states, no prescription needed, and exactly the same as the ones issue via prescription by a doctor...except it didn't work for @Tempstar and if he reported correctly, which I doubt not, was a perfect and valid test case.

And, frankly, after spending a couple of hours on the Google God, I am convinced that I need to be more concerned with medical preparations than bullets.

Antibiotics wont work if whatever your using them for is resistant to that type of antibiotic. so unless you know exactly what your treating and that its not resistant to that antibiotic.....
I just had a dog in that spent the last 2 months on 3 different antibiotics,, first didn't work (skin infection)... second one didn't do squat.. Vet Finally did a culture (should done to start with) and realized that whatever it was the dog had picked up was resistant to most antibiotics and they had to use a particular one to treat... 3rd one cleared it right up. However running through 3 bouts of antibiotics has caused other problems which there now having to treat.
Given the option, id rather treat naturally when possible and at least avoid the side effects of prescription antibiotics. (plus im allergic as hell to penicillin and several other random meds)
I have had Very good results treating with Colloidal silver, Oregano oil, Thieves oil, etc. and never had any adverse reaction.
(not saying you cant... everything has the potential to cause a reaction.. I know somebody thats allergic to strawberries:sick:)

Yes, I have done the same. I got a Kindle version of the PDR Pocket guide (~$8, published January 2013, couldn't find a newer one ) and paperback of a PDR 2016/2017 for ~$20 (published November 2015)

In the medical world, most will laugh at the mention of coaxial silver, and yet for would care, often the first thing they reach for is.................... Silver. In this case Silver Oxide! Same same, only in a medically approved version. No official claims have been made in co. silver working or not, and yet we have been using that very thing for almost 100 years to treat wounds and infections! The human body is designed to run on metals, they exist in nature and are found in our foods, the water we drink, every thing we come in contact with has metal in it, or around it. Look at what a lack of iron does! Point is, while there is no solid proof outside the medical community of co. Silver doing any thing helpful, there are piles of medical papers pointing to the good powers of silver!
Alcocolides are so effective at fighting all kinds of issues because they bring a chemical into the body that the body can accept and that chemical creates an environment that viruses and other nasties cannot survive, and yet the body and all the organs can function normally whit it. The Media community is just no realizing how powerful and effective alcholoides have become, and the more we learn, the more we find it to be capable of! You can buy it in the grocery stores right now, and not have to worry about processing it, or worry about getting the right amounts, or keeping from going to far! You can also Google foods that have high alcholoides and start eating them, you would amazed at how well they enable your immune system. When we started consuming more of it, we found we don't get sick, we don't get the flue, we don't get a cold, and when we feel a hint of something, we up the dose and hit the silver more, and that's as far as any bug ever gets! We are also seeing positive results in cancer treatment with my mom, so much so that the chemo dose has been reduced!

@runswithdogs "Antibiotics wont work if whatever your using them for is resistant to that type of antibiotic so unless you know exactly what your treating and that its not resistant to that antibiotic..."
You are absolutely correct. Specific antibiotics work well for some specific things and not so well or not at all for others which makes it necessary to know what you are treating and which antibiotic to treat it with. I think the PDR will help with this.

But, I know nothing about Colloidal Silver except it sounds like a treatment for a Vampire bite. I am not doubting you especially since you have experience with it. I am saying that I am ignorant about it. I have heard of it but never paid attention and will be doing some reading about it today. I do think it would behoove the monkeys to have a discussion about it.

I will say this. I got a severe case of food poisoning overseas, thought I was going to die in my own bed. Actually, I was too sick to be in the bed and camped out next to the toilet since I was spending all my time in there anyway. The wife took one look at me and dosed me with a liter of water mixed with some purple looking stuff. I had no idea what it was but it was 'kill or cure' time and at that point I didn't give a damn which but being the Westerner thought you had to treat food poisoning with some sort of prescribed antibiotic. Long story short, I improved immensely but she couldn't tell me what she gave me due to language difference but apparently it was used by everyone in the region as food poisoning is not uncommon there (I never ate outside the home after that incident). In the following years, I think it was Potassium Permanganate (comments or experience?). I am not even sure you can purchase it here or if you can make it but I learned a great respect for home remedies and/or treatments that are outside the normal Western methods for not everyone has access to hundred dollar antibiotics.

Interesting. I am going to read up on Colloidal Silver today. I mean, your argument is sound in that the body must have minerals (metals) to be strong and I know many use this Colloidal Silver. I just don't know anything about it. How is it on helping hang-overs? LOL! Got a Russia/Ukraine crowd coming over tonight and I already know the outcome of this.

"Alcocolides are so effective at fighting all kinds of issues"
Do you mean 'Alkaloids'? I want to make sure we're on the same page here...

"You can buy it (Alkaloids) in the grocery stores right now"
Such as? Please give an example to aid my research, one you purchase and use regularly.

@Bandit99 There is a pretty helpful thread here on colloidal silver you should dig through. It's especially helpful In sourcing the silver and processing it!
It also contains many good links you should check out!
There is/was also thread under the FDA on alcholiodes on the Google thing, if I find it, i will post it up!
As far as antibiotics goes, be careful, for a civilian, there are almost no ways to determine what your fighting, and no way to determine what to use to treat. This is one of the reasons I don't care for fish antibiotics, i cannot fight what I cannot identify! Look at Houston, several folks have come down with nasty flesh eating bugs, unless you can identify the exact bug, your screwed, ether you amputate, or you die, there is no simple treatment with antibiotics with nasties like those!!! Even in a well equipped hospital, the chances of surviving one of those with all your parts intact are pretty slim, your going to likely loose something you kinda need!
Silver oxides, iodine, salt and lots of penicillin are about as effective as the more modern high speed medical treatments! Don't forget to steam every thing you use in treatment!
