It is powered by a 4-cylinder volkswagon turbo diesel vertically aligned over the alternator. The Alternator is rated 30-45KW. It's a very nice generator with very low hours and I'm interested in trades or cash and will entertain reasonable offers. Pick up in mobile, Alabama.

Nice looking unit. Saw one in a cell tower about 20 miles away. As far as I know still in use there and only real use it had ever had was exercising and testing. Don't know how it would be for long term use, but with the volks engine and regular maintenance it should be good. Was surprised at how compact it was, being vertical the foot print wasn't much larger than an equipment rack, and was told it was quiet but did not hear it run and to tell the truth the maintenance man was not at all comfortable with me being there or asking questions. Almost acted like he had read a lot of prep fiction too, so I didn't push it even though the tower is on a good friends land and he was with me.

Yes, they were built by Alturdyne Turbines with a computer module that senses when it needs to kick on automatically. I was reading the manual last night and I am pretty impressed with this unit. It is more power than I need but the little Volkswagon engine is pretty fuel effectient and it is very quiet.

Looks like a pretty sweet unit. I am sure you have your reasons, but even being a bit large for your application if it were me (the packrat), I would treat it like gold and hold onto it. Jus sayin.

Bout the only thing I would have to trade would be ARs. I suppose I could go 1 AR-10, 1 AR-15 Grendel 6.5mm, and 4 standard AR-15s with Stoner 16" uppers or Delton 16" uppers, and all with Anderson Lowers. How much cash are you looking for Sea.

I';d have to get 5K, this is a pretty serious benny, one built for long-term usage..I am needing masonry, plumbing, and electrical work in central Tennessee, fiberglass nd mill-wright in Mobile and possible other skills , as for barter. I got platy of guns unless it is something special. Might trade for horses, I hear they are tasty.

What luck or experience have others had with a genset that is larger than you would usually use, but running at perhaps half load and using it to recharge your solar system and meet your power demand at the same time? Out of my league, but if you had a good sized solar power system and could use 6 to 8 kw to recharge your system and have a 5 kw load, you are up to running it at half load which should be very efficient. What luck have others had in that area? Also love the thought of having a huge surge source available for welding, irrigation or other intermittent loads that just aren't usually practical for solar. Looked at a diesel unit up near Bar Harbor Maine one time at a summer camp that had went broke. Was a large 4 cylinder diesel that ran at 1800 rpm and had supplied a whole camp. In retrospect I should have bought it if for no other reason than to use the waste heat for my greenhouse, it would have been cheaper than a gas furnace. LOL

The thing about Diesel Gensets IS, that once you pay the price in BTUs to get it rolling over at Speed, it is almost a Straight Linear Line on the Energy Out, per Fuel Used... What that means is, if your Total Maximum Load is 20Kw and your Minimum Load is 5Kw, It will be a Straight Line on the Graph of Fuel Used to KwHours Generated...
Now this in NOT true for Gasious, or Gasoline, fueled Gensets..

FWIW, the max fuel efficiency for Diesel is at around 90% load, makes 'em sing. Gas engines are happiest at around 50%, more or less. That said, BT is correct about linearity of fuel use. The bigger sets just take more to get ready for loading.

BTPost In the real world of electric power production, which I read about and you live in, it would seem like there would be a huge difference between max fuel efficiency and minimum amount of fuel used. Would you realistically use more fuel to produce say 10 kw of power with a unit designed for 10 kw or a 20 kw unit running at half load, given you were setting up the system and had a choice between 2 used units? Would you be ahead with the bigger unit as it would have more surge capacity and also allow for future growth? From where I work, fixing power tools, I know that if you are really going to use a gas genset day in and day out, a good Honda, although 4 to 6 times the cost of a cheap Harbor Freight, is the only choice, and twice the size you think you need is also a given. Have no real world experience with diesel gensets and the RV crowd around here has a totally different perspective about fuel use. When you are running air conditioning etc in a $100,000 unit, you probably don't have fuel efficiency and original cost as your highest priorities.

I don't mean to hi jack the thread or go way off topic, but this genset caught my interest as a possible way to go for power that I hadn't thought of before. I have always considered my ultimate unit to be a huge slow running single cylinder Lister type of around 10 kw and living with the vibration, rebuilding older unit or rebuilding a new India made unit, etc. The unit seacowboys has for sale, and a solar system with battery backup, brought a lot of new possibilities to mind as a commercial 30 kw unit made in the USA and suitable for long term use is in the $30 k range and the ex military units can be very good or a very large can of worms.

Ghrit is correct Diesel Gensets are MOST Efficient at about 90% of Rated Load... However, that efficiency , doesn't change all that much, until you get down to about 20% of Rated Load... My experience suggests that if your MAX Load is 15Kw then you need a 20Kw Genset... When I first started living here, We had twin Onan DJC Air Cooled Diesel 12.5 Kw Gensets... as the Home Load, expanded, from 10Kw to 15Kw by adding Freezers, Telephone System, Inverter/Charger Systems it became apparent that we needed to up the Genset size. After much research they found a really nice 20Kw Northern Lights Liquid Cooled Diesel Genset to replace one of the Onans, that was due for an InFrame Overhaul. The second Onan was delegated to Backup duties, because it couldn't keep up with the Starting Loads of the System. When the Second Onan came up for InFrame Rebuild, it was replaced with an Identical Northern Lights as the First one, that had just been InFramed. Both of those Onans were rebuilt and are down in the StockRoom Warehouse, on the shelf, STILL, after 30 years. I ran the original Northern Lights for 25 Years, and when they were coming up for InFrame Rebuilds, we found that parts were NOT available to do that as the OEM Japanese Firm quit supporting these older Blocks. So, we ran them until they Failed, by spinning the Center Main Crankshaft Bearing @ 66K Operational Hours. When the first one failed it was replaced with the newer 20Kw Northern Lights Genset, and the second old one failed in the exact same MODE, within 250 Operational Hours, of the First Unit... It also was replaced with a duplicate of the other Newer Type. Those two Gensets now have about 19000 Operational hours on them and are due for a Top End Rebuild this coming Summer. both have had WaterPump replace, at about 13000 Operational Hours... Other than that, they just Keep Ticking along with LubeOil Changes every 200Hours, and normal Filter Changes, on schedule...

BTPost. that is about 7 1/2 years continuous run per unit, 15 for the pair. That is the real world experience I love to hear about and enjoy. Thank you.

Seacowboys, told you I would get back to you. I got a callback and email from my cousin in Tenn. He indicated he would love to have a genny like yours but, finances and time were both very short commodities with him at present. He did not elaborate, but as I said before he does out of this country missionary work for his church, and his schedule is a mystery to the whole family as he will drop whatever he might have going on to meet whatever demands they might ask of him. He got my email via his cell phone and responded with it both by voice to my answering machine and to return respond to my email. Sorry he couldn't manage to work some deal with you. Tac
