How often is it really necessary to wash your hair? I'm about two weeks overdue for a haircut, but letting my hair grow a little longer has made me notice that it looks and feels better if I don't shampoo it every day. I still give it a rinse, and massage my scalp, but skip the shampoo.

I have a full, luxurious head of hair, and have been a daily shampooer all my life. Now I find that my hair is like dry straw after a shampoo, but is more manageable and softer if I skip the shampoo for a day or two.

Are there any concerns with not using shampoo so often?

Do a Marine revert and you can wash your face and hair with the same washcloth.... ;) if you are concerned try a little conditioner every once in a while...

Back in the day, baths weren't as often, washing your hair , men and women , was usually a weekly occurrence. I can remember growing up, bath times were really only stressed 2 to 3 times a week. The other times, it was a quick washcloth sink bath.

A lot seems to depend on what kind of hair one has, and how oily one's hair usually is. Shampooing too frequently can cause hair to become dry and fragile.

How Often Should You Wash Your Hair?

A good brazillian will solve some hair washing dilemmas.

    Hmm interesting question.

To me, showering at least once every 24 hours is the minimum standard for personal hygiene. I know most Europeans won't agree with this, but then again we Americans don't need to marinate ourselves in cologne/perfume to smell nice, either.

Anyway, to your point, hair washing can probably be done, I don't know, every few days? But unless you use hair coloring or some kind of scalp medication, there is no reason not to wash your hair every time you shower. I mean, you're already in there soaking wet, so why not?

If your hair drys out then maybe you're using the wrong shampoo. Survival Monkey is not a beauty/personal care website so you're probably asking the wrong crowd.

I keep mine mowed down with the clippers with no guard just short of shaved head. Now the beard on the other hand can be a real chore to keep clean and soft. I am afraid if I went a week without washing the beard I would collect enough food crumbs in it to make a full meal. My head hair though if allowed to grow out turns into banana curls and knots and I am one of those grease bomb people that if I don't double wash it daily on the 3rd day it looks like I have not washed it in 3 months. LOL I guess hair and a shampoo/wash schedule is like opinions.......... Subjective :)

When I was working in very close proximity to others in manufacturing, bathing every day was mandatory including washing hair.
Wearing a bunny suit all day you sweat like crazy ,and I more so .
But now that I'm retired I shower when I feel like it , but then I'm not sweating a storm either. Once a week is fine.
Been loosing hair since my 50s but it's long generally, and thin on top.
It doesn't matter how often I shower or what I use, the rate of loss continues. Not going to cry about it , doin better than my grand dad, my dad and my son.

You don't need to shampoo your hair at all. many people find their hair does much better without "shampoo"
if you stop using shampoo there is a bit of an adjustment period where you may get to deal with really greasy hair until your body realizes whats going on & stops over producing oil. keep brushing to work the oils through your hair & rinse with water however often you find works best.
you can also use conditioner only, or things like rassul clay (my hair does nicely with that one)

@runswithdogs is correct that there is an adjustment period but once your hair adjusts to no shampoo then your hair will feel great. Not using shampoo everyday or every week has my hair feeling soft and healthy. I rinse my hair everyday but shampoo is rare or getting rarer. People bathe too often IMO. Most people could save water and just do a spit-bath every day. I have been thinking about the rise in dandruff and skin conditions. I really think it is due to all the chemicals we put on our body in the pursuit of cleanliness. We never had body wash when I was a child, we only had soap.

I see my wife and girls using baby powder in their hair on the days they don't wash theirs. They just sprinkle it on and brush it out. I am guessing it removes the oil.

I brush a little talc through my hair and wash it weekly with conditioner. My hair hangs about two thirds down my back. I braid it when I ride my motorcycle.

I started the experiment yesterday. No shampoo, just a nice scalp massage and rinse. This morning it feels like my hair dries quicker, and it is already more manageable. All my clothes are dark colored, so I will see if any dandruff problems arise. I doubt it.

i have hair down past my ass, i only wash every 2 weeks and i put oil on the ends in-between, when i wash it i only wash the scalp, and I brush my hair a lot to massage my scalp and pull oil from top to bottom,

You have to get past the oily stage for some ppl that takes 3-4 days for me it never gets oily and i have healthy hair, there is a post @ditchwitch did on 'no poo' hair cleaning somewhere

sufactactant (the sudsy part) are not good for long hair
