Excellent read and no matter how familar you think you are with the AR15-M16 platform, the section on setting and using the standard battle sights and setting the standard 0 is priceless. If for no other reason it and the Appleseed program with a Ruger 10/22, along with the ar15, would allow you to effectively and with minimum use of .223 ammo, familiarize non shooters into the use of the platform. I hate to be pessimistic, but given the propensity for some "survivalists" to buy the latest and greatest gun listed in Guns and Ammo magazine and never fire it or learn how to use it, after TSHTF there well may be a surplus of weapons and a shortage of ammo. Even now the above system, battle 0 and Appleseed program, will allow you to introduce yourself or others into the effective use of the ar15 in a few hours and for less than about $50 for ammo the last time I used it. They will not be trained. but they can effectively fire the weapon. put a dummy cartridge in the mag at random so they can clear duds, and punch acceptable holes in paper targets and be able to clean and care for their weapons. Several have taken the steps to go beyond that level to my great joy.

Thank you for the resource and bringing it back to our attention.

It's been a while, but a nice refresher now and then never hurts!
While your at it, how 'bout posting up the modified zero for the A-2 H-bar sights, I bet a lot of monkeys would benefit from this Info, or at least having an alternate sight zero for C.Q.B. settings, which makes the AR an even more effective tool!

Take a peek at the "sight in" module in AR-15 Guides that I pushed up earlier today. Else I'll see what I have for CQB adjustments.
Or even better: one of my bookmarks is still active: Improved Battlesight Zero

All said and done, we are back to the old hunting rule, sight your rifle in at 50 or 100 yards, depending on terrine and anywhere in the USA where you have field and woods, you can ignore computing the range. In Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont, I have never hunted deer where the shot wouldn't be within an inch or so at distances I actually shot. I have seen elk and antelope hunting videos where you had to allow for bullet drop, but I have never experienced it. The way I read it with a scope sighted at 100 yards, at 25 yards you will be about 3/4 in low and at 200 yards, about 3 inches low. I have never shot a deer at over about 75 yards in the woods I hunt. I also think for most realistic defenses around my location, any defender would never make a shot over 100 yards. Even in more open country, the vast majority of the shots taken by non snipers, would probably be in the 50 to 100 yard range maximum and most at 25 yards or less. Military and real life would seem to indicate that having a weapon with a good battle sight picture, your opinion as to which is best. and having all semi trained individuals doing their best to shoot that 0 would probably give much better results than trying to optimize their shots and just adding one more factor to confuse them. Perfection is always the enemy of good enough and often leads to nothing being done.

Different tool for different job! For my C.A.R. 16 Commando, it's a point blank modifyed zero, with the remaining elevation at 200 and 400 meters. Its what that weapon is best at. My 7.62X51 has a natural zero of 230 meters, and the .30/06 has a natural zero of 300 meters. By natural zero, the sights are set to the lowest setting and mechanically set to the rifles natural zero. For the 5.56, because of the hight of the sights over the bore axis, a alternate sight setting is needed to make up for that, hence the modified zero setting refereed above. For those un sure, study the link Lancer posted and see what you think!

    Thank you @Lancer.
I've been an M1 and its variations guy until just recently when I bought my first AR. I figured in these times it would be prudent to have a modern musket. But that puts me at the bottom of the learning curve, so the knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Personally, I still like the standard 25-meter zero on A2 sights. On BU flip sights, 100-meters.

The A2 sight system with its intended 62-grain ammo is amazing. 500 meters on point targets is very doable. KISS.

What ever your preference, train with it and get to know it inside and out. Muscle memory with your sight system is no different than anything else.
