There’s something really cool about using a hitch or knot. Pulling it off with an audience can increase the pressure but also the satisfaction. Here’s my top three.
    (3) Bowline. Awesome knot with tons of uses.
    (2) Timber Hitch. Another useful knot for tying things off where a Clove Hitch might be difficult based on diameter or ?
#1 is the Munter Hitch. Wicked tension is possible and released with ease.
I’ll post a memorable Timber Hitch story a bit later. :D

Blood knot is an extremely useful knot to know! I also use a Double Tri-Line knot pretty often, especially when I need absolute strength! A Palomar knot is also a very useful knot, especially when used for heavy lifting. I have others, but these are fun to do!

I’m going to look some of those up. Either different names than I’m used to or unfamiliar. :D

I find that a bowline, a timber hitch, and a square knot are the most useful knots in my profession. I insist that all my employees be able to tie them behind their back. My least favorite knot is the running hatchet knot and that is usually what you get if they don't know a bowline or a square knot.

I usually end up using a square knot, a truckers hitch or half hitch, but I have found nothing better than the in line knot for flag halyards, trot lines etc. There is no single universal knot or lashing and they can become very interesting puzzles as is fly tying.

I like the locking clove hitch, but I made up that name, not sure what it's really called, you make it by holding a loop straight, then letting it drop into a figure 8, then put it over what you need to hitch, basically it a clove hitch with the end leads over lapped under the cross of the clove hitch, it holds very well.
If anyone knows what it is really called, let me know... I've been calling my Trommel a dirt sifter since I invented it 30 years ago!

Bowline, half hitch, double half hitch (never heard of a full hitch), square, and the one where you pull a quick release loop in a line and tug a line through that for tension. I don’t know the name.

Given the threads and posts that I have seen on this forum, I would have thought that this would have been the most popular knot.....

For me, a bowline, running bowline, or a timber hitch, are what I mostly used as a young man. For those who may not know, the (bowline) knot is stronger than the rope.

Clinch, bowline and double fisherman's knot are the ones I use most frequently.

I believe a fisherman’s knot is the same as a grapevine. Awesome knot that should have cracked my top three. :D

    Mine:
Sheet bend to join two lines, especially if one is thicker than the other
Slip knot is how I close all plastic bags
Lark's Head knot to secure any line to something at a right angle like a prussic sling or a lanyard.
Midshipman's/Tautline Hitch for adjusting the length of a line
Square knot as a general "duz it all"
Granny knot back in the day just because it used to piss my Dad off

My skill and dexterity at hitch and knot tying back in the day was, sub-optimal....

Failed reef knots usually became granny knots,
Failed granny knots would become reef knots,
And sometimes I'd fail at both and surprisingly (at least to me) tie a thief knot.
Otherwise, when fishing, I'd (as often as knot).....tie a,

Like a tools in a box, the more you know how to safely manipulate the fabric the better it can work for you, in their specific applications . Also knowing the right time to use fastening substitutes that will not compromise the fabric .
I call it a fabric because there are many different kinds ,that have their limits and strengths .
Knots usually create injuries to the fabric which limit it's future use . so do certain necessary metal substitutes for that matter .
I have rope that is strong but expendable because it functions better in certain applications. beyond rope that are steel cable and chain that require their own level of skills but not something generally you want to tie in knots and handle .

My favorite is the knot I see on a very regular basis, what I like to call the “Thunder Knot.” It’s a combination of all known knots into one with a few overhand knots to jam the entire monstrosity into a tight ball that requires a sharp knife to “untie.”
