AR 15 question

Hears the deal, there's a gun show coming to my area in March. A coworker and I are going. He wants to get an AR. Now I know there are as many AR manufactures as there are beer brewers. I'm just trying to get him a good reliable rifle at a decent price point. Thanks for the help.

DPMS makes some good introductory models under $600. I really like mine.

 

Make sure you take a look at the prices of Local gun stores before you go.
Sometimes the deals at the gun show really aren't deals.
If you have a local rural king near you will note that they have 6 AR15s under 600 dollars.
DPMS, S&W, Ruger and Bushmaster.

In my area, there are so many private AR's for sale, that I would have to think twice before buying one at a dealer or gun show. Has some other benefits as well. I know that if I asked around at the range I could find a few for sale at anytime. Usually sold by an old fart that loves to play with guns, no longer is physically able to shoot them all, has children that either aren't into guns or who live in gun unfriendly states, and could use the money. If you sell them to a dealer, he usually takes 25 % or so of the sale price, has to to stay in business, so buying direct helps on the price. I don't think that there has been a time in my memory that the price, selection, quality, and availability of AR's has ever been better than it is right now. Several manufacturers are building quality entry level weapons with minimal bells and whistles that are inexpensive, have all the bugs worked out of them and it definitely is a "mature" platform, that stand behind their sales, and have a wide range of options that basically lets you assemble your dream weapon. In my limited opinion, the best effect of Hitlery running for dictator for life and losing, was that the firearms industry and the private panic buyers are still trying to unload all the excess inventory that was created during the panic and there are some incredible buys out there, both commercial and private. Please don't overlook us "older folks" when you wish to buy a firearm, we have them, we often need the money, we often can no longer use them or pass them down to the next generation, and have a habit of dying at a fairly quick rate and that does limit the governments ability to trace the weapons without the aid of St. Peter or the competition.

 

Thanks for the information guys. The gun shows are not the bargain bin they use to be! I'm going there for him to get a feel for what he would want in an AR and than purchase it elsewhere if he decides on what one to get.

 

I am 80 now and that is not "elderly" yet, one of these day I may have to check out those Senior Citizens traps, last time I checked they seemed to be full of over aged yuppies, but it may be different now. Might be a little off topic, but a few of us have reloading stuff, older firearms, up to Springfields, consider the 308 a bastardized version of the 30-06, etc, are bored, being told to get ready to move to a smaller place, etc, and have made most of life's possible mistakes at least once and hopefully learned something. I know I learned a lot from my elders 60 years ago and I hope that the custom continues with the newer generations.

 

At our Local Rural King Store they have DPMS for $400.00 plus 12% off sale

 

Bought my DPMS Sportical at a local store for $525. A week later I got a mail circular from another store, same gun for $500 even. Ah well. Got a nice hard case at the store too.

 

There is also the Very Good option of selecting parts and assembling your own! It take a bit of research and learning, and a small investment in tools, but this way, you get EXACTLY what you want right from the get go! Think of the AR as the small block Chevy of the gun world, they are so common and so easy to "build" that you can have one that does exactly what you want it to do, and cheaper then the other options by quite a lot! Building allows you to select the Quality of individual parts, and to configure something exactly the way you wish, instead of buying one and then making changes to it to make it the way you want it! Often times, a Build can be done for only a little more cost then a base model AR! Then there is also the satisfaction of learning your rifle inside out, and being able to repair and maintain your Rifle more effectively, and the pride level goes up as well. JMHO

 

I always build my own now. starting with 80% lowers and all the remainder of the bits over the counter for cash only. Infinite customization is possible, and eventually, (like me), one gets to the point where it becomes mix and match for lowers, uppers, and accessories. And the Guberment doesn't know about any of them. As an aside - the skills acquired are invaluable should S hit the F.

 

I like being able to reproduce odd balls like a CAR-16 Or an A-1 slider carbine, or a CAR-15 Commando, or a XM-177!!! Stuff I got to carry in the service, or at least very close replicas!

 

Been looking at the new Side charger Uppers, and New bold drives that don't need a rear ward buffer system! Should be a super compact build!

What others have said... All kinds of quality AR's at budget prices and most parts regardless of whose name is on them came from the same hand full of manufacturers. Palmetto State Armory even provides the bulk of parts to FN for their part of the M4 contract. A good friend just put together an AR from one of their kits that used his stripped lower for something like $400 and it's every bit as good as any other AR I've seen.

Along with PSA I'd add in Ruger, S&W, DPMS as great values in the $500 range. Save the rest of your money for the currently abundant ammo deals and stock up. I'd rather have an entry rifle with too much ammo than a high end rifle and not enough ammo.

Regarding gun shows - in my experience all the good gun show deals exist only in history. I haven't seen anything in years that was a better deal than I could get any day of the week elsewhere. What IS good about gun shows is the variety and the ability to compare and handle different weapons.

 

THAT is an outstanding deal for a legitimate Colt 6920! I have the older LE6920; and I love this gun!

For whatever it's worth: Windham Weaponry, (They manufacture parts for S&W's MP15.) Anderson Manufacturing, and Del-Ton offer better than average AR15's — Sometimes at good prices, too.
