I put this in 'General Discussion' instead of 'The inferno' as my intent is to discuss not to rant however leave it to the Mods good judgment where it should reside...

Basically, what this is about is the 3rd verse of the National Anthem which most people do not know. I didn't. Basically, the problem is the one line that references 'hireling and slave.' This verse refers to mercenaries (the hirelings) and runaways slaves the British got to fight for them in exchange for freedom. Also, to be fair, and if I remember correctly, Francis Scott Key was a slave owner...but please keep in mind most of our Founding Fathers were also.

While I do see their point, I am confused how a Student Body of a Public School has the right to anything of this sort. Frankly, I don't think they do but, of course, it is California which is a country of its own and not part of America.

Personally, I would not be offended or disagreeable to removing this 3rd verse from the Anthem but understand by doing so it is, again, a rewrite of history instead of people understanding and accepting what the words truly mean. But, let's face it, we never sing and few know the 2nd, 3rd or 4th verses... But, would the removal be enough? I wonder. And, there is a history that shows that conceding has gained very little except more demands.

Anyway, I am interested to hear others opinion concerning this as we will most definitely hear more about this in the near future.

Francis Scott Key's "The Star-Spangled Banner," 3rd verse...
"And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps' pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave"

...and that leads in to a fourth hopeful stanza...

And thus be it ev'r when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation.
    Blessed with victory and peace......

Many academics seem to feel that the National Anthem is purely militaristic in nature, but fail to see the end result of such actions.

Looks pretty clear to me that no one could hide from the battle. Has zilch to do with slavery as an institution. But then, some of us think a bit more broadly than making assumptions about single words and their usage.

That school district (along with a lot of others) are suffering from the "education" that the staff got from hippie era profs..

    Well said, sir. Well said...

@ghrit Sometimes I get the feeling they want to make a big deal out of nothing for no other reason but causing havoc and discontent.

To do away with history you stand the chance it will be repeated. The history of the United States of America should never messed with.We need more teachers that teach our history as it happened and not just pick the parts they want to teach to suit them. That’s the first step toward the kind of government China, north Korea have. What will happen next is they will be burning history books. Those teachers should be tarred and feathered, never to teach again. If we don’t watch California will bring the whole country down.

I’m 75 with a 9th grade education and I know better than to let this happened. Wake up folks before it’s to late.

So, these assholes are picking apart a part of our national heritage, taking issue with something that isn' there and forcing it down the throats of those better! I see, let's deny true history and tell tall tails of what might have been! One only needs to carefully read the entire "Star Spangled Banner" to understand the full and true meaning of what this country was founded on, what we fought for, and died for! Time to stop preaching falsehoods, and start teaching the truth as it happened!
    So says me!

Ya know, cutting out the third stanza would be like cutting the glass slippers out of Cinderella 'cause they might give kids the idea of using glass tumblers for footware and cutting themselves.

Read? You think it possible they would comprehend even if they did? I hate to say it, but with the attention spans that a huge number of people seem to have, I'd guess that once a word was hit that triggered a Pavlovian response, context is meaningless.

Unfortunatey I agree! Too many of our youth get triggered so easy, it's a wonder they can even function in society!
Even my Lovely Bride has read and understands fully what was written by Key, and English is not her first language! She dosnt fell triggered by it, she didn't even have to ask for an explanation of our history, she gets it fully!

Very good comparison! And, yes, you are right. The sad fact is, I truly doubt it would make a difference in the long run. It won't be long before they'll want to change the flag next...

I figure we have until the next election before things really go sideways here, about the time the Dems retake the white house and the hill, the Seberal States are already warming up, so its going to be a shit show in 2020!

No problem with them banning the national anthem, sanctuary, teaching all that garbage about slavery, etc, just can't understand why they want all the benefits from the federal government that they hate so much. Simple enough, no federal aid to their school, no federal lunch programs, no federal guarantees for their graduates for college loans, etc The same ones who hate the feds are always the first one to take the government to court when the money stops.

  12. I was taught that the slaves were the subjects of the King who did his bidding unthinkingly. The hirelings were, of course, the Hession merc's to whom the King out-sourced the job. These men were hired out because the leader of Hesse was strapped for cash, otherwise we would never have had the detestable Hessions. George A. Custer was descended from one of them who spelled his name Kuster. This verse was dropped when the United States and the U.K. became allies against other countries and we didn't want to alienate them.

Ya. I'm just a bottomless well of useless information and opinions.

"California" is enough said to explain anything anti-America.

Information is never useless, even if it is wrong, you must think about it to know that. One of the most beautiful words in the English language is serendipity. One of my favorites has always been the first antibiotic, Flemming went on vacation and didn't properly clean his lab before leaving, when he returned, he noticed that a type of mold seemed to slow down bacterial growth and wrote a paper on it. A research scientist who was also great at getting grants read the paper and got a grant to do research and though it worked, it required too much mold to be usable, then while they were trying to show the Americans in 1941 how to grow it, a lab assistant brought in a cantaloupe with a pretty mold on it that turned out to have 200 times as much of the bacterial fighting material and they were off to the races. In 1945 as a child, I caught tularemia, usually called rabbit fever, and got penicillin to treat it and got well instead of dying and 70 + years later am here to make comments. Now that I consider serendipity as I have had an enjoyable 70 + extra years up to this point
Personal bias, I give God and my parents a little credit also.

The problem is not with the students so much... it IMHO starts with who is teaching and what is being taught...

fix that and the problem will be reduced considerably...
