I live in a 900 sq. ft. cabin that has many points of ingress for the local rodent population.
I have trapped them until no more showed for the killing, and then they would mount a new invasion.

Well, I noticed this product in a sale add for one of the local farm n ranch stores. I picked up a couple box's, each with four packets, and places four packets in corners down stairs and did the same up stairs. That was two months ago and had not seen a mouse nor any evidence of their presence until this past week... TWO MONTHS mouse free!! Just with spearmint and peppermint oil soaked shredded corn cob's in a sashe. I would recommend it.

I am planning to try to make my own, but until then...

I also have had excellent results with spearmint! One of the guys at the Dealership told me about it.

What happened is last winter (not the one we're currently in) my wife's car, a Rav4, got mice in what is called the Cabin Filter, supposedly suppose to clear the air coming in from outside into the car, whole family moved in, it was a mess. Apparently, this is very common around here with this model/type of car. Well, the wife through a fit! And, to be honest, I didn't know what to do. I mean, I stuck a few traps in the car, caught the mice but damn if they didn't come back in 1-2 days. So, in desperation, I called the dealership and talk to the Service Manager. He laughed, then apologized and told me he gets this call constantly come winter. Told me change the filter then spray the new filter with spearmint or peppermint spray, plus the rugs and don't worry about it.

It works! No kidding, it works great! We sprayed both the vehicles now but seems they don't bother the truck for some reason but like the Rav as the filter is right under behind the glove box. So, yeah, I can definitely confirm it and yes, we make our own.

I'm glad it worked for you...but it didn't for us.

Ended up using glue traps and letting the terriers terrorize them...over a year rodent-free.
Of course, going around closing all apparent means of ingress had to help, too. ;)

Bug and I had this rat that moved into our shanty-boat once while we were away over-seas on a salvage mission. This nasty rodent had crapped in all my favorite boots, gnawed handles off reels, and the entire boat had to be evacuated and everything inside disinfected, washed and steam-cleaned. I set traps and the begger would push things onto them to trip so he could steal the bait. He would run into the saloon late at night and then hide behind one of my guitars so I couldn't get a shot at him. There was a narrow passage between the galley and the saloon and I placed a 12" high barrier across it then covered the floor on the back side with glue traps. SUre enough, the little bastard came running through the galley, hopped the fence and CAUGHT! I shot him with my revolver loaded with rat-shot. Bug was asleep in the loft and when she heard the gun, she peeked down and asked If I got him? We had a dead rat party the following day and invited all the boat people at the marina, fried fish, played music and built a little raft and pyre to give the rat a viking funeral.

Cats! If you live rural then you gotta have cats.

But you can also use high quality feed store rat bait. They like it so much that they will take it home.
Mfg knew this and they have a hole through the corn cob looking bait. Run a wire through the hole and tie it someplace.

Not exactly poison just one of the new chems that dries up the blood.

One of the vitamin K baits.

You end up with a pretty much mummified rat that if a varmint eats it may slow them down.

    On the home front.

"Mint generally repels mice quite effectively. Mice dislike the smell of peppermint and avoid it. Put several drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball and place it where mice enter and exit a room."

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

I’ve used peppermint oil to some success in my absolutely unsecured (from mice) shop. However, I cannot get results in the house.

I ordered some spearmint to mix in with the peppermint.

A girl told me the other day that she puts peppermint oil around in her kitchen and that keeps them away . I was shooting at them with my BB pistol the other week , while drinking enjoyably . Found out the other night , I wasn't hitting them because I was enjoying the drink to much . Got one with the BB gun the other night , but found out them BBs make a hell of a racket in the vacuum cleaner .

We had an issue with wolf spiders and I made a solution of vinegar and peppermint oil. It worked because our spiders are almost gone. I have to keep spraying but after reading this, I think I will make up some pouches of shaving or something dosed with peppermint oil.

Hmmm, Peppermint, Sounds like a winner.

I was reading a thread the other day about mice eating wiring in the newer cars.
Seems the mfg's are going ''Green'' and are using Soy in the wiring attracting mice and rats to monjay the wiring resulting in a complete wiring harness replacement to the tune of 8K or better.

True, Gator. Mice, rats, squirrels....they just love modern wiring! Under the hood, on top and f the fuel tank, along the frame...even under the dash. Mothballs seem to work as a deterrent.

I use cayenne pepper powder all over an engine (under cover shroud ) and only under the hood.
The seal to the wiper cowl / windshield MUST be free of the power , THATS OUR air to breath..
Garlic cloves left in the frame , top of tanks e
If I need to put cayenne pepper powder under the unit , OUTSIDE it goes & then lifted & sprayed on . to hold , spray egg whites over .
Every time a rat / mouse walks & pisses (they pee sent trails ) they wake up the cayenne pepper powder to burn them & leave..
Garlic reminds them the burning feet .

There really isn't a hard-coded recipe. Get yourself some peppermint oil, some strong stuff and there will be directions on it to make a diluted solution. I do about double the dosage, maybe more, make it strong. Yes, the car does have a strong peppermint smell but as long as the wife isn't complaining then I'm good; besides, it's only for the winter... Put it in a sprayer and spray wherever you think they are getting in or where you find droppings or a nest or etc....

Cat's are no good in this area.. The forest critters find them very tasty, and the cats figure that out and wont go outside. cat box's stink worse that the mice..
