I am one of those rare folks without an AR-15. I have noticed they are dirt cheap right now.
If that nutjob in Florida doesn't cause any major problems with their sale.
I would like to hear a few recommendations for a budget AR-15 rifle? what make you like or what features you would make sure to have?
I figure having a semi-auto rifle more powerful than my .22 is a good idea.
    I also have considered a semi-auto shotgun.

    My recommendation is now.
Seems like the AR15 market is imploding.
Your budget will go a lot further now then compared to say 4 or 5 years ago.

I would recommend a carbine length 16" rifle with a 1:7 barrel twist (bullet weight 62-77 grains), chambered in 5.56X45, but then there are those who want a 20" barrel with a little extra range accuracy. But, my Marine Corps Company high shooter son will tell you that additional 4" isn't needed. That is the limit of my knowledge, I'm sure others will offer their opinions on how you should spend your money.

    As for the shotty, I bought this 590A1 - 9 Shot | O.F. Mossberg & Sons

And, although not a semi auto; is has a 9 round capacity with storage in the speed stock for 4 more rounds.

I'm less fond of 16 inch, prefer longer just because. 1:7 is OK, 1:8 is also OK and should also handle 55 grain pills. If I were getting another AR to replace the one that is still under ice, I'd go with a Wylde chamber also. The advantages of Wylde may not be there, but just because I think it may be better is no reason to spend money on it.

Unlike most here, I only have two ARs. Both were purchased within the last two years...
I have the Colt LE6920 (like Yard Dart recommended) because like you I wanted something 'now' and there are so many good ARs out there that I didn't have the time to screw around and research each and every one because Hillary was on the campaign trail and the clock was ticking so having served 8 years in Army, I went with what I knew. It's a great gun. I have not a bad word to say about it. I stuck a Vortex 3X Spitfire optic on it and it's done. Ready to do the business if needed. I got about 1000 rounds thru it now. No problems.

I am a bit reluctant to talk about my other one since it was quite pricy but have lusted after it for years and since I for overseas for so long and couldn't purchase and carry around a personal armory - well - broke down and got it. No optics on it yet but will do so soon. I did put a set of Magpul pro iron sights on it and like them so far but need more testing on the range. It's a piston gun made right here in Idaho. A Primary Weapon System (PWS) MK1 Mod 2 in .223 Wylde. I wanted a really good piston gun and I think this is the best but admit it was very close between this and the FAL...and I will probably get a FAL some day in the near future but they're not cheap either...

Just go to Walmart and buy whatever one they have; they're all pretty much the same and like barbie-dolls. You can dress em anyway you want to.

My wal-mart quit selling those evil black assault weapons. I myself have the Ruger mini 30 and like it better than the ar15. The mini 14 and the mini 30 are able to have 5,20,30rd magazines. Most people do not think of these as being (evil, assault, black, killing machines), they think a 5rd hunting gun. Then if the need arises all you have to do is bring out the loaded 20 and 30rd magazines and you are ready to go. Also they are brown not black and that helps.

After you decide on an AR think about one of these, nice to get double duty out of a gun. As far as an off the shelf you can't go wrong with the colt, S&W MP15. Stag arms and DPMS are also nice platforms.

S&W MP15 - I own several of them. The above is a good review. About $500.00 right now.
