California secession - good or bad?

Secession: the action of withdrawing formally from membership of a federation or body, especially a political state.

Currently, there is a large part of California (New California) that wishes to secede from the coastal part (the super-liberal part) and form their own state. While this sounds absurd, there is historical precedence even in the U.S., West Virginia being the example. Internationally, there are many more, Kosovo immediately comes to mind.

California is now the 6th largest economy in the world, approximately twice as large as Russia's and about equivalent to France. The specifics of how this separation would affect their massive economy is not the point of this thread but do keep it in mind.

Speaking strictly, would this be good or bad for the country, for the people of California and the people of New California? What is your opinion and why?

Personally, I think it would be a very good thing:
    1. They would lose much of their economic clout after loss of much of their tax base
    2. They would lose much of their political clout after loss of much of their voter base
    3. It would force California to realistic social changes due to the financially changes
    4. It would more clearly represent the people of New California social and political views
    5. Shouldn't have any impact on the U.S. as far as I can see except 51 vs. 50 states and a few extra Red Senators and Representatives.

    Bad:
    1. I can't come up with much except, New California might have huge leverage on California due to the latter's lack of fresh water but many other states have the same problem.
    2. Possibly this would set a modern-day precedent and next we would see New York split...but is that a bad thing?

What am I missing? I haven't truly thought it completely through but at first blush it seems a very good idea all around and forces California to stop acting like a foreign country by pulling some of its teeth. Opinions? Comments?

So, the thought that a "New California" would hold any sway over "Old California" doesn't pass muster with me. California has been exporting bad ideas for decades and their neighbors to the north have taken them on. In time, with "immigration", I don't see New California dealing with it any better than Oregon and/or Washington state. Add the fact that now there are additional Senators and the Electoral College gets reworked, this could actually clinch things for the Dems.

I have heard the the lower part of OR and the Northern part of CA would like to form a new state. It is a good idea and would benefit the citizens of those areas because currently they are subject to laws and politicians that really do not identify with them. It will not happen.

Well, I imagine that the price of oranges would definitely go up. I missed that one, definitely a bad thing. LOL!

I read where I think its one of the Carolina's is putting up the talk of secession due to any federal infringement of the 2nd amendment

I have friends in N Cali, they openly admit they are ashamed of the Bennie Brown Zones.

Mass of votes come from the cities so they are not capable of changing the Law Makers, or so they believe.

Let the cesspools go their way and let others have a chance to start a new life.

No, I doubt it will happen.

Good, as long as they form their own leper colony of a country we loose a good portion of the worst of the worst senators and representatives.
They they can do what ever they want, go on raping each other and start up slavery again.

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

Not secession as much as state division. State division has worked out well in the past.

Attempts at secession from the union haven’t fared so well......

Really? Surely it is not one of secession?

I have many fond memories of going down that coast road in Northern California, absolutely beautiful! I think it is highway 101 and 99 if I remember correctly.
