The House Veterans' Affairs Committee is due to mark up a comprehensive veterans bill, H.R. 5674, the "VA Maintaining Internal Systems and Strengthening Integrated Outside Networks Act of 2018," also known as the

This historic veterans' legislation would consolidate and reform VA's community care programs; extend funding for the current Veterans Choice Program for one year; strengthen VA's ability to recruit, hire and retain quality medical personnel; review, realign and modernize VA's health care infrastructure; and extend eligibility to VA's comprehensive caregiver assistance program to aging and disabled veterans injured before September 11, 2001.

DAV has joined with 37 other VSOs/MSOs to write a letter to the House and Senate Veterans' Affairs Committees offering our strong support for passage of this historic legislation aimed at improving access to care for our nation's veterans, strengthening VA's internal capacity to deliver care, optimizing and reforming VA's health care infrastructure and expanding eligibility to support services for veteran caregivers of all eras. Please click here to read the letter.

"...so that all enrolled veterans have timely access to quality medical care."

Things are looking better. It's still a six month wait for openings to see the only provider in town that takes TRICARE for eye exams. The VA, which had been my last resort for any care, has recently coordinated with my military treatment facility to save me an entire duplicate exam. I was seen at a brand new VA facility that saves me eight hours driving time for specialty appointments. Best of all, the attitude of the staff at this new facility was positive.

Let me see if I can paint a picture of then and now. Then, both the Fayetteville and Durham NC VA hospitals had an atmosphere like the hospice wing of a nursing home. Take a number and sit in the hall. It was depressing enough, but the attitude of the employees made me feel like I was a burden to them. The new Wilmington, NC VA facility is light and open, the people are polite and helpful, I was in and out in no time and look forward to my next visit. I felt that the staff really took an interest in my care, and cared about me. :)

I'm encouraged by this, and hope no veteran ever has to experience the VA I saw when I retired. (1999)

I am seeing a close copy to what you stated with the VA Compensation claims we fill out for the Vets.

Most claims, if presented as a fully developed claim meaning correct documentation of the event, are decided in less than 6 months. Two very well documented claims were decided in the positive in less than 2 months.

Glad to hear it is improving.

That sounds like a vast improvement over the 11 months I waited to get even my first 20% rating. My pals at the DAV (and ain't it funny that I can remember all these guys first and last names and can't do it with any other group of people that aren't family.) took over my case and had my final rating approved in under 60 days.

I have no desire to go back to the "good old days."
