We have a few members on here who have big gardens, @ditch witch, @Radishman and @TnAndy but what about the rest of the monkeys? Gardening is a skill that we all should have.

Here is what I am doing this year. Last year I tried to grow in a few pots but it was mainly a waste of time. I also moved in July so not much attention was given to my plants. This year I decided to try a method that has been discussed and tried by other monkeys.

    Straw bale gardening:

    IMG_4009.JPG

Yesterday I got two bales and a tarp. I soaked them good and will be doing the watering plus feeding of nutrients for 10 days then I can plant. I put them near the fence so it can be used for tying up the creeper plants and tomato. This is my first time trying this and I have read great results. The bales were $10 each which is a cheap garden IMO. These two bales will not produce a ton of food but I am in a rental so I have to think small but I am excited to learn straw bale gardening. Will post up-dates as the season progresses.

    What are you growing?

Cattle, I tried chickens one time, all died, checked with Tex A&M, they said I planted them too deep.

My garden (30'x30' approx) this year consists of 24 tomato plants, roma and beefsteak style. Roma's for canning (diced, sauce and salsa) and beefsteak for summer eating. 3 rows of green beans (just finished off the last of last years frozen green beans), sweet pepper plants, jalapeno's, squash, zucchini and a few herbs (dill, basil, etc.) .

Might be adding some space saver cucumbers if I can find the space.

I bought a container tomato yesterday. They said it will be compact but fruit bearing. I am interested to see how well it does. I have seen tomatoes grown in pots but this container tomato already looks different from normal tomato plants.

If you like Roma's, you'd LOVE Amish Paste tomatoes. They cook down in half the time, and make a much thicker everything, cooked or not.

I am running way behind this year in the gardens but am finally getting my personal garden planted. Just dumped the pictures from a folder that I took and used for a how to article I wrote a couple of days ago.

DUH I forgot to put what is growing here On the bale netting Blue Lake Stringless pole beans, Cucumbers on the cattle panels, the two rows to the left are experimental tomatoes. Three rows to the right of the grapes are nantes carrots, then another 4 rows of red pontiac potatoes. Everything else I need I steal from the market gardens and high tunnels. The Trees are peaches, apples, bartlet pears and old school purple plums. The bench is where me and my dog sit to take breaks in the shade of a peach tree and when ripe sit there too long slurping on peaches.

I see you use cattle panels (among other stuff) for your climbing stuff. That's mostly what we use too. I like the stiffness of them, the length is right to handle, and so on.

Yep big fan of cattle panels for tomatoes and cucumber. I find the NH64" bale netting to be better for the pole beans and it last for 3-4 years before needing replaced, it won't bear the weight of tomatoes or Cucumbers though. I gt fed up with tomato cages that blew over every time a storm rolled through and half the time ripped the roots out of the ground. SO switched to all cattle panels about 15 years ago. Still use some cages in the high tunnels for the early tomatoes. LOL most of cages are now wired on top of the chicken pens and we call them coon flippers. Funny watching a coon trying to climb over them and it roll and flip the coon off the fence.

Well...dunno. I am not allowed to do that technical stuff like planting. I'm just the hired help, low-paid hired help at that. I will have to check with the Master Gardener, Ms. Bandit, as soon as I finish weeding, of course...

ok the list of what will be grown this year.
    Animals:
Chickens, Turkeys, Ducks. (no pigs again this year .. last year was swine flu at piggy supplier this year weaner pigs are 150 ea !!! Nope not going to do it.)
    Veg:
Hubbard and Acorn squash, pickling cukes, giant sunflower, oil sunflower, Hungarian peppers, potatoes, green beans, some itty bitty chilies, onions and peas. And there are tomatoes of various types scattered all around the property.
Oh, and any plants that come home with VT jr and jrette. They are both working at different greenhouses and seem to bring home plants aren't selling.
    fruit:
black berries, black raspberries, nanking cherries, apples, hopefully this year the kiwis will fruit. Ditto for the hawthorne, lowbush blueberries. I'm thinking the Saskatoons are duds.

I've been mowing the peppermint and spearmint that took seed in the front yard. Don't let that stuff get away from ya, on the plus side, you don't smell like premix after you weed whip it.

I do the passive grow, Figs, Blackberries, Pomegranates.and grapes these are seasonal care and are easily propagated so from a few you can fill a fence line and all can be dried canned jellied used for juice, wine, vinegar or used in Pemmican. and in every form trade goods.

Having enough other ingredients like pectin I buy it by the pounds and sugar by the hundred weight lemon and lime juice raw vinegar and other things  If we go into a financial downturn some items may get expensive like Venezuela if you have enough you can produce enough stock to stay ahead of inflation -- hopefully.

Although this may sound simple but you also need air locks clean gallon jugs or carboys clear tubing silicone plugs some books or recipes, some of these you can re-purpose or make but that is hard as hell when the world is scrounging for anything to turn into cash.

Sorry I got sidetracked, I do a small garden Pinto beans Sweet potatoes multiplying Onions I raise a bunch of carrots but that is a winter crop started in late january and they take 70 days to mature.

Just a note to all the new gardeners every fruit vegetable or spice requires specific ground temperatures to germinate so many days to mature and they all can come in at once or differing times and others keep producing until they die out. in each you can allow a few to sprout to seed and collect them or open the fruit and remove the seeds and dry for next year if they are Heirloom varieties Hybrid generally are a single year growth and the seed gotten from this crop either has very limited output or is completely infertile.

There is hardware that one need to stock up on galvanized wire, T-posts sisal cord, don't bother with tomato cages make your own with concrete reinforcement rolled wire. enough Epsom salts and balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 and liquid Sevin and a few pump up sprayers insect year to year can swarm and devastate certain crops to the ground. Just remember natural means viscous voracious and deadly the same nature that produces cute bunnies can crate them in waves or a tiny piglet that becomes a 500 pound monster tiller that can wreck a garden in a few hours and kill you if you try to interfere without a weapon.

We have 2 hectares (~ 5 acres) of land, here at the farm. Our crops: Rice and Sesame. Just depends on the time of year. Rainy season brings on rice. The dry season is for Sesame.

Can you maybe explain in a separate thread how/what you do with the Sesame? :)
Not sure what this crop would be used for in regards to food stores.....

I'm still raising tomatoes, I got... probably 30 plants in the hilltop garden, and some melons, but I've been busy removing old A/C and putting in a new pad for new A/C... which is also in the hilltop garden. The lower garden... well it's got about 120 or so potted trees being watered by the drip, will sell most of them at the Farmers Market, Ponderosa pine, Blue Spruce, Aspen, Austrian Pine, the Pines do well here in SE AZ, but the place I buy them from, (up in your neck of the wood MM) only sell in quantities of 30 so I use some and will sell the rest. Also got a bunch of Blackberries and Blueberries, need to prepare a place to put them. The Barred Rock chickens are doing well, I added another 50 hens last August to the 45 hens (+6 roos) that I got December 2016, and just hatched out about 20+ today, so I will also have prepared chicken (roos) to sell at the Farmers market (you can do up to 1,000 a year with no inspections). Also thinking of selling in the "other" (OPSEC) nearest city, and will probably sell off some of the hens because they have just legalized backyard chickens in the city limits, I suspect I can get $20.00 each for them.

Anybody got a way to lower the Nitrogen in the soil? My hilltop garden is pegging the scale for nitrogen and potassium?
