I try to lift heavy stuff regularly..... kind of cross-fit, but in my own backyard. ;)
The dog also enjoys our long walks in the AO....gets me moving miles daily; a chance to learn all the nook and crannies, trails and key points; and keeps me off the couch when I get home. [winkthumb]

What are you doing for your fitness to be physically prepared for SHTF?

Honestly not enough most likely. I'm active around here-there is always something needing to be done. I do my "farm chores" early as possible now that it's 80 degrees by 09:00. If at all possible I quit outdoor stuff by noon and work inside the shop from then on. I don't work out now but moving plates of steel and angle iron around building targets does offer some help. I need to walk more to help build up my wind. Limited movement in my knee rules out jogging, running or pedaling a bike.

Outside of someone who lives in a war zone, anywhere without technology, or an active SEAL/special forces or PJ there aren't many people at the fitness level they need to be. Realistically we have to be fit enough to live long enough to get there once SHTF happens. You can compensate for it a bit by intelligence or having skills that will be valuable enough for others to want to keep you around, like medical. Right now I'd need an IQ of 1,000,000 to compensate.

Nothing. I have slowed down and have been changing things up to get back into doing. Last night I ran the weed wacker for about 45 minutes cutting down a wild area. I still use a push mower but I have slowed down since living in suburbia and I really dislike it.

I'm suffering from O.L.D., but I'm not letting it get me down. Still made it on the podium for a medal this year in my annual 5K run, even with a badly damaged knee and torn up shoulder. I have a really sweet physical therapist who is a sadist, and loves to stick me with needles and massage me with rocks. It's working, mostly because I'm doing my home exercise routine so I don't have to see her again. At 57 I'm feeling better than I did when I was 25. Decades of injuries make me cautious, but don't slow me down much.

Biggest single element of my fitness program is beach sprints. 50-70 yard maximum effort sprints at least 6X, every 7-10 days. You must RUN, and run like something is behind you trying to eat you. Jogging just makes you tired and sweaty.

I had been looking into machines for home use. We debated and I found one that has three different exercises that I thought may be worth the money. But before purchasing, I started asking people if they have an in-home exercise machines. I am finding that most people use them to hang clothes on. So after discussion with the boys, the dining room is becoming the indoor exercise area. There wasn't much in there anyways but it is now open space. When it is 90 degrees out, we can still exercise in the dining room. All you need is motivation.

we have a mile plus walking path that the dog and I used to walk but Denver keeps throwing their homeless out and we had a few creepy characters camping in the area. I always questioned why someone would pay to go to the rec center to walk or why the elderly walk in malls. I think it is for safety purposes.

Urban ANYWHERE is not conductive to health. The closer you are to the core of the city the more it sucks away at you and the bigger the city the bigger the suck.

@Motomom34 exercise machines no bueno in the home, if you don't exercise now in your home, doing basic body weight exercises and walking in your area, the machine wont help. And they are noisy.

My house most certainly is an exercise machine... but I'd also suggest looking into the exercises in Primal Blueprint. Real simple things that use body weight and balance, and similar to the Charles Atlas exercises used by Kirk Douglas. Kirk did his own stunts, and in the movie "The War Wagon" gymnastically climbs a vertical hill like he was riding up an elevator. He was near 60 at the time. There used to be a clip on YT, but I can't find it anymore.

And he did it all using his own body weight and no special equipment, just a pair of chairs from an interview I saw. The techniques are widely available on YT, as are the very similar Primal Blueprint exercises. None of them have a big time commitment either. I just haven't figured out how to do them in my recliner.

Bowflex, but it's old and they don't make it anymore. Simple, fairly quiet and if you use it :) it works.

Here is a clip where he climbs a cliff using a rope, I think there is a second scene where he is even more acrobatic, but here you can see how effortless it was and it looks like he isn't even breathing hard. He's in his mid 50's. How many men past their 20's could do this so well?

I'll 2nd this suggestion. Push-ups , sit-ups , stretches . Look into Core exercises. I used to do a lot of these in my younger days , it actually helps your body feel better all the way around , versus weight lifting or a treadmill , not that there a bad thing. I'd do more of them now , but I'm kind of like 3M-TA3 ,,,I can't get past the recliner when I get home from work. Not enough energy left for more strenuous stuff .
