I have seen adds for new shotguns that look like pump shotguns with a magazine. I am curious if any kind of adapter would make older pump shotguns work with this? Anyone here check this out yet? It's not like I can't live with my shotgun the way it is, but it has me curious. I wonder if this just adds to the tube and increases the capacity or replaces the tube completely?

A pump tube magazine has some advantages over a box magazine, it can be loaded through the ejection port and in through the tube. once a magazine conversion is installed I doubt it will allow any other ability to load and the tube will remain as a guide for the forend.

Remington did it first, new DM (detachable magazine) models. No idea if there are any conversions, but I think they look neat.

When I checked a few months back no one offered a conversion kit for the remmy or the mossy. I expect that to change, but I don't expect it to be a drop in.

I'll keep my Saiga 12. Works great on raccoons when they get into the flight pen. Then again .. it was designed as a mag fed AK style 12 guage to begin with.

With a 9 shot tube magazine Mossy 590 A1 I cannot see any advantages to any other design pump shot gun! A semi auto might be different, but only if the mags gold more then 7 rounds would their be any benefit, and that's against a unmodified semi auto tube feed! Their are conversions of tube Fed shot guns that can expand the round count to 15, both semi and pump, so i see no practical use for these new designs other then a comic to sell more guns and or accessories! Out side the speed of a mag change, most traditional shot guns ate pretty fast to reload, especially the Winchester 1897 through Mod 12 and the Remmy 870s and Mossy 500s, as well as the semi auto, especially the Remmy 1100 series, the mossy 930s, the Winchester SX3, and the Benelli Super series! The only mag Fed scatter guns worth a crap are the Russian AK based Saiga, and the new KSG!

The only advantage I see is changing the balance over a tube fed especially if using an extension.

I see that this removes a possible thing with states... many states place a limit on just how many rounds a shotgun can have loaded..

with a magazine you could have a 3 round mag for hunting and a many more round mag for home defense?

I use a standard length tube, my reasons for not using an extended tube are from bad experiences of my own and others I have learned loading tactics and use a side saddle carrier with the plug out. if you load your own you can increase the total number by 20% and Aguila makes mini and other companies make short shells a couple of shotguns make a adapter for short shell use.

there is a time and place and a useful range for a shotgun I know how to build a shell that can make a 100 yard trip with excellent pattern and terminal ballistics on the other end my use is night, thick cover or close up 30 yards then bird hunting. the defense rounds are not hunting and vice versa If I had to survive a shotgun would be last on my list of guns to haul around although I know how to use one successfully I realize their limits. In a home or permanent location they are one in a battery of tools like golf clubs you don't use a putter to tee off with and you don't use a driver or iron to putt. but you can use all of these to defend yourself with if that's all you got.

I figured it would be kind of clunky with that magazine sticking out. But it looked interesting.

If I my intention to defend a homestead it would make a good truck gun to augment a pistol with a 10 round magazine, only if I had 2 one would still be a tube feed the only way I see it working is without a lifter and that makes any other way to load improbable a mag follower would need to be high so I am not sure but might be too high to drop in one in the ejection port but for sure without a magazine the only way would be to shuck it in upside down again only guessing that is why I would have to get one and train with it to know for sure.

That would be Federal law on the 3 round limit for hunting.

Migratory waterfowl rule is Fed. Other game in other states could well be different.

being able to "add a few" in a shotgun battle will always be advantageous - can be strategic & calculating in fact sometimes .... if you live urban - having a slug or one of the new defensive loads in the magazine line up is hardly advisable - but having a few available on a cheek pad or side rack allows for their addition when the situation allows - can make the difference in a battle ...

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

Shell by shell reloading of a tube magazine seems more tactically safe. I like the ability to top off while on target and ready.
I've had two detachable mag shotguns. The first was a Marlin 5510 and the other is my Saiga 12. Both required me taking my eyes off the prize when reloading and reduced me to one live round at best.

Part of that is my fault. Lack of practice makes AK hinge in mags clunky as hell to me.

my idea of a defense Shotgun
12 GA vent rib 870 Remington express uses 2 3/4 or 3 inch shells factory standard tube.
I like the fact it has dual action bars and vent rib
trigger guard mounted safety easy to push off in any position ( a thumb slide I have seen to many get lost).
Improved follower. original steel spring retainer, magazine tube cap w/ swivel.
synthetic full hollow stock w/ sling swivel, short forend so it does not block the tube feed when back
butt stock shell carrier minimum 5 round helps keep weight at back for balance found one that holds 6
stiff leather sling to keep it out of the way just so it's not floppy or can wrap the shotgun
cylinder bore ( no choke ) 19 inches but no longer than 21 inches in case you need it inside a vehicle.
brass bead front sight, half size mid bead white / ivory

In the butt stock I keep the mag plug, in case I ever want to hunt, a bottle or Rem-oil and a bore snake.weapons brush.

like state farm Ive seen a thing or 2 it might be rare but broken wood forend's and damaged extensions and busted or cracked wood stocks to avoid this I choose synthetic stocks, The magazine tube can get damaged, a standard tube has the least amount of tube exposed if you do want better accuracy with slugs a rifled barrel or choke I don't shoot a slug for accuracy at long range for me it;s stopping power and penetration up close within 30 yards

If your determined to have an extended tube get the Remington factory all steel and fits tight but have an extra stabilizer or 2 I had looked for one for a friend here was one I thought might be good and stable NORDIC COMPONENTS 12 GAUGE SHOTGUN EXTENSION TUBE CLAMP

I was thinking more about home defense to my property line. As for carrying more shells, I have one of those belt jobbers that holds 25 shells. that way I can live out my bandit thing by slinging that over my shoulder and head. It goes across my chest and gives me easy access.

they have regular bandolero that are designed as across the chest wear - usually 50 or more shell loops ... not only handy for a body carry of a larger shell load but great access to shells in a vehicle - hang the belt around & across the seat backrest - front & back seat have ready access ....
