@Motomom34. Here ya go, just what we were talking about a while back! Lol
Seriously, these are the kinds of things people here should know, and the more you can practice sutures, especially the knots with forceps, the better and more effective you will be, AND the risks of infection or other complications drops way down! I don't have a way to post my books to the web, but I have a pretty good set with lots of tips and tricks, some very relevant, and others kind of old school, but still invaluable to have as part of your skills! Visit your local butcher shops and see if you can talk them into some pigs hides to practice on, if it's water tight, your where you need to be, if not, you will know!

I've down loaded these in the past and lost them, glad some one posted them again.
On a side note for small cuts some times in stead of a butterfly I've used super glue. Sewing creates more injuries deeply into the epidermis, where as glue eventually is lost in skin shedding it's self. Each action depends on the damage, area of skin and materials available and urgency of the matter .
I use colloidal silver to wash the wound area ,and because it does not leave a residue (except silver) ,as soon as the water is absorbed or dries even tape closures are practical . the less you have to damage the skin the better. (alcohol kills skin cells)
Personally ,the only reason to apply stiches, is if there is the need to move the patient on their own steam and the danger of breaking the injury open is likely . Even some hospitals procedures do not completely close a wound, but they are not moving the patient either and have a sterile environment to support them .
The idea of learning these things is an advantage, not only now, while we still have modern medicine to fall back on or when modern medicine is too far away to make a difference, but more importantly post SHTF and there is no one else to turn to ,literally.
The idea of training ones self with proper procedures, provides a foundation too in the event perfect conditions are not at hand an you do have to improvise .

Please also notice the use of medical staples to close the larger scalp wounds....

Recently, I needed stitches for a small head wound. Afterwards, I informed the wife, that given the cost of medical care in this country, she would be sewing me up if something like this ever happened in the future again.

What I really need is a place to purchase suture and needle (kits?) for a reasonable price. And, perhaps a recommendation of what common Kits/sizes one should keep on hand.

That's one of the etter places to go, get a combo of supplies, especially needles in the 16mm and 24mm sizes, and the big 33s to practice with! The kits are worth their weight in gold, but it's also practical to have the smaller individual components to replace as needed/used! The staples kit is also quite handy, and is reusable like every thing else, just boil/steam and your good to go! If or when you make your first purchase, get your self a couple pairs of small forceps, fly fishing shops are a very good source here, and while your there, also pick up a spool or two of brightly colored silk tying thread, so you can see what your doing better! Finally, have some one teach you to the the Blood knot, and the Clovis hitch, and finally the double running cross stitch, you wont use it much, but once you see it done, it will make sense why to know it!

A couple of years ago, my daughter brought her husband and my grandbabies to our house for the holidays. The 2-year old grandbaby was climbing around on some furniture, fell and put a nasty 1-1/2" gash in her scalp. Blood everywhere. Everyone was panicked except my son-in-law who also happens to be a doctor. "No worries, we'll just hair stitch it" he says. Sure enough, he isolated a couple of strands of hair on either side of the gash and tied them together across the cut. Repeated it twice more and called it good. Damnedest thing I've ever seen.

plain dental floss or waxes? I use glide so wonder if that would work. @Bishop you are tougher than me, I can give shots and stitch up other people but stiching myself... it would have to be a desperate situation.[treecutter]
