So, we've been contemplating a move recently. Between the influx and influence of west coast liberals, rising real estate, and cost of living, well....it's time to go.

We've been looking at the Brownsville, TX area for a bit now. I'm Texas born and raised, growing up farther up the coast, but haven't been back in a while. The question for y'all is this: has anyone been in that area recently and seen or experienced things that would deter this move? Maybe observations or things you won't get from the local news or an internet search. We're a year or so out from moving, but I still would like some input from anyone familiar with the area or have been there somewhat recently.

    Thanks, as always.

    It's practicallyin mexico.
That part of texas already votes blue, either infiltrated by illegals or left coast dems, maybe both.
I know may wife commented once that she wouldn't want to live there and she lived in a Houston suburb for a few years in the 1990s.

We spent a few weeks in Texas near and around Brownsville, not a very pleasant place, we also spent a bunch of time in and around Houston, again, not a very pleasant place! It's getting harder and harder to find areas not infected with Californication, so Good luck! We love the mountains of Colorado, so we plan to stay put. the folks are much more neighborly and the politics haven't shifted to the left, and will be fearlessly resisted!

Location on the border has been discussed. To be honest though, I'm guessing your haven't been to the Denver metro area in a while, either. Ethnicity has nothing to do with my view of others or out interactions. Legal status and such, well...different story. But that problem is nation wide.

    Pros so far:
-- Good jobs available for skilled workers, there appears to be a demand for skilled trades
-- Among the bottom of the list in cost-of-living category
-- Damn near palaces for pauper prices
    -- Fantastics fishing
    --It's Texas

Brownsville is too close to the Border for security. If you're Hispanic like many of us that may help.

The Valley is different now and very dangerous.

The politics may not have shifted to the left in the mountains, but they are essentially un-represented, and big city rules are applicable throughout the state.

So have I. The front range is going to keep growing.

If you move to Brownsville, isn't that prone to an occasional hurricane? I always look at what natural disasters can occur when looking at a place. I will not live someplace that is prone to earthquakes or hurricanes.

    Try Brownwood, Texas.

Much better place to live if you can find work.

Yep...hurricanes definitely apply here. I've ridden out a few, years ago. That's part of life on the Gulf. If things are looking to get ugly, board it up and head for the hills.

I'll take a look. Other areas we've looked into are from Harlingen on up to Corpus, skirting the coast to be within easy driving access to SPI.

Yessir....unfortunately, Alaska is one helluva task to start at this point in my life. Not that I wouldn't love it...

Lived in Houston for a little while, I left, and I didn't leave anything there. Try Idaho, Wyoming, even where I am now Southeastern AZ, unless you really have to be on the coast.

We've looked at some areas in Arizona...I think I'd prefer north/mountains. But yes, the coast appeals to me. Not a whole lot in Wyoming, though seems to be a good state overall, for folk like us. Plus, the thought of going back to work in the oilfields isn't all that appealing.

My son-in-law is a county deputy in the Houston area.....avoid living in that AO....things only going down hill in that area.

Corpus is still ok. From there West isn't bad. Austin, San Antonio, and the Eastern hill country are overdeveloped to Marble Falls. Junction, Brownwood, Llano are OK.

Rockport is gone. Hurricane Harvey destroyed it.

Consider Wyoming in a bit more depth. Utah also rates a look. Winters are not that bad, and summer heat is trivial, at least it was that way in the 70s. (Dry enough that swamp coolers will work well.)

Wyoming is a lean living. I think that is quality of life, quiet and simple but I do not think you will get rich up there. After living in CO and watching the cost of living sky rocket, maybe @GrayGhost would like to get ahead.

And that's why I've been considering Brownsville/Texas. Good wages for the line of work I do and a pittance for housing/cost of living. I'm not going somewhere to get rich, just live a rich life. I have "things", but don't need more money to be happy.

All of the things going on here and around the world, we have no control over. I think it's best to prepare as best as possible, and live a good life.
