Atlanta school removes Pledge of Allegiance from morning ritual

"An Atlanta charter school will not recite the Pledge of Allegiance as part of its morning meeting agenda."
".... and they will continue to be asked to stand to participate in the school’s Wolf Pack Chant each morning, according to the statement"

We recite the Pledge of Allegiance each day at the school where I teach.
We also have had some great conversations in my class , 'bout just what you are "pledging" too and what that means and entails....

One of the few "perks" to working in a Special Needs / Life Skills class is that I can have some leeway in lessons...and learning about "everyday civics" ....like the Pledge , the difference between "Fair" and "Equal" , Rights come along with responsibilities etc...can happen along with our regular class subjects.

What, on God's green Earth, is a "Wolf Pack Chant"?

For a guess, the Wolf Pack is the school team's mascot. But the elimination of the Pledge seems to be fake news, just moved from all hands to classrooms.

Pretty wishy-washy, but a horse's mouth denial, even if the horse isn't the fastest on the track.

I love media reporters that never got the message about checking before printing.

Whoops! Decision reversed. I guess their eliminating the pledge drew a lot of attention. I saw this linked on Drudge this morning. Public school, receiving state funding. The pledge will now be said but one can opt out.
School reverses Pledge of Allegiance policy after criticism

It boggles my mind that a school would even consider doing what they did. There are emotions around saying the pledge <<< that statement right there is the issue. The is a group of young folks that are not being taught the words and what those words mean. And because the parents may be into taking a knee, the kids think that is what is correct. They should just ban history also because that seems to be changing also.

  6. I believe Red Skelton gave a word for word explanation of what the pledge MEANS, and why it is so important to Mean it not just recite it. Maybe it's simplistic of me but this country needs national goals that at least most citizens can and will support. I wish I had some solutions. X-T invaders?

As I recall Red Skelton also ended every show on prime time TV with the words God Bless as well. Lost a son to leukemia at 10 and took time off during the height of his career to be with him full time and was involved in childern charities the rest of his life. No profanity, little sex, no real violence, often no words, but a real pleasure to watch and a man to admire.

Red was a class act, not at all like the garbage that passes itself off as comedians today. A proud American. We need more like him or perhaps we need more audiences that would appreciate him.

His father died before he was born, left home to work at 10, grew up in the depression, had problems with drink and depression, led a good life, did the best he could and always helped in any way he could. Yet today he would be called the poster child for white privilege and such due to his humor. He grew up and developed his skill, most of the world today has no real concept of the poverty, hardship, sadness, and work he endured as he went thru his life. We all remember his comedy and that would please him very much I think.

Off topic, but the initial issue is put to bed, so ---

The shame of it all is that you need to be almost ancient to remember his performances and humor. "Kids" today are used to and buried in the likes of Howard Stern, Amy Schumer and a fair share of the SNL bunch. Subtlety is unknown (not to mention not understood when it does appear.)

Jack Benny and Jimmy Durante were cut of similar cloth.

And Bob Hope. Good comics all. They showed us jokes can be funny without attitude and cursing.

I don't think it is off topic, all were first and foremost Americans and proud of our country, its roots, the Pledge of Allegiance, etc. Cousin was in combat in Korea when Bob Hope was giving a USO show, heavy on pretty ladies, and was on the line and missed it. About 2 AM when it was guard shift, his replacement told him to go back to the bunker or whatever it was called. Bob Hope was there with a Captain and a couple of guards. Talked for a couple minutes, wished them well and headed out to the next post. No press, no camera's, no fuss, certainly wasn't being paid to do so. You did not speak badly of Bob Hope in front of him. Used to be for good or bad, most of Hollywood, in spite of all their moral failings were still Americans and proud of it. Elvis drove a truck, Ted Williams was a Marine fighter pilot. and so it went.

The left and the internationalist or whatever know that if they are going to destroy what we are as Americans they have to get rid of the simple truths and things that remind us of who and what we are. In our civic duty it used to be the Pledge of Allegiance, the oath we took to support the constitution when we joined the military, or when we took office in the government, or assumed a government post. Our government was founded on certain principles and they were laid out in the Constitution and it was set up on purpose to be almost impossible to change. When we did change it in a heated moment, outlawing alcohol, we found out to our dismay, that those stupid old white men had been a lot smarter than we thought. Our whole legal system is constructed on that simple document and is meaningless and will not work if it is not honored and if the simple oath we take when we appear before it is not honored. It used to mean something and when you said that you would tell the truth and the whole truth, so help me GOD, you told the truth. The EPA, OHSA, all the various "administrative" bodies that we have set up, believe that they are above the Constitution and that it is a dated document that prevents them from doing their desired duties. Climate change, social justice, free lunch for all, redistribution of wealth, making your tribe , or your desired race or religion or sexual orientation, the superior one all require the destruction of our basic principles. They also know that if they are to succeed, they have to change our basic beliefs and have thus used our educational system, our media, our music, our supposed social elites, etc to do so. Black Lives Matter only works if the ones chanting the slogans have been raised on a steady stream of music, Hip Hop or whatever, that portrays police as the bad guys and the bad actors as the free thinking good guys.
It is probably my paranoia and perhaps these comments should be in the tinfoil hat section, but I firmly believe that the original subject of this thread, making the Pledge at best optional or removing it, is the canary in the coal mine, and it is time to resist or our system of government will be lost and with it the civilization we have known for the last 200 + years. We have as a people and a country made major mistakes in the past dealing with groups , native American, slavery, women's rights, etc, but throwing the baby out with the bath water is not the solution.

Some history to save you having to look it up for yourself (U R welcome)

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by the socialist minister Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). It was originally published in The Youth's Companion on September 8, 1892. Bellamy had hoped that the pledge would be used by citizens in any country. (side note for perspective, my own grandfather was born in 1894)

In its original form it read:

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. At this time it read:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy's daughter objected to this alteration. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
Section 4 of the Flag Code states:

The Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag: "I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.", should be rendered by standing at attention facing the flag with the right hand over the heart. When not in uniform men should remove any non-religious headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart. Persons in uniform should remain silent, face the flag, and render the military salute."

The original Bellamy salute, first described in 1892 by Francis Bellamy, who authored the original Pledge, began with a military salute, and after reciting the words "to the flag," the arm was extended toward the flag.

At a signal from the Principal the pupils, in ordered ranks, hands to the side, face the Flag. Another signal is given; every pupil gives the flag the military salute — right hand lifted, palm downward, to a line with the forehead and close to it. Standing thus, all repeat together, slowly, "I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands; one Nation indivisible, with Liberty and Justice for all." At the words, "to my Flag," the right hand is extended gracefully, palm upward, toward the Flag, and remains in this gesture till the end of the affirmation; whereupon all hands immediately drop to the side.

    The Youth's Companion, 1892

Shortly thereafter, the pledge was begun with the right hand over the heart, and after reciting "to the Flag," the arm was extended toward the Flag, palm-down.

In World War II, the salute too much resembled the Nazi salute, so it was changed to keep the right hand over the heart throughout.

I'd sooner burn Detroit, Baltimore and DC than Hotlanta.
It'd be better for the nation as a whole.

Last time I was in Hotlanta, the auto we were using took small arms fire. Ya, just 'some drunk' shooting the place up, but while the dip**** was shooting for fun, I would have died in earnest
BTW - this was in broad daylight and we were in the Interstate...

ATLANTA is doing a fine job of burning itself down, no help need by outsiders....

While we are on this topic... I recently went with my wife to her American Citizenship Naturalization ceremony. They did an amazing job and swore in 84 people from 32 countries. I say amazing because it was very patriotic and emotional.

And, the thing that struck me (and confuses me) the most was their Oath which states "...I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign Prince, Potentate, State or Sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or a citizen..." This to me seems very specific - yet - it appears to be a grey area if an American citizen can hold dual citizenship. Below is the best explanation that I ever saw. I imagine the US government could get ugly if they indeed wanted to enforce this on a specific individual at a specific time for a specific reason...just a thought for those that hold two passports or have loved ones that do.

"The United States does not formally recognize dual citizenship. However, it also has not taken any stand against it, either legally or politically. Typically, no American will forfeit his or her citizenship by undertaking the responsibilities of citizenship in another country."
