Starting an Eco Green Off Grid Community in Alaska

Starting an off grid community in Alaska and looking for members. Looking for individuals with skills who are hard working and able to live through the winters with a wood stove and taking care of animals, everyone has their own tiny house...

Eco-green makes me think of growing and in Alaska that takes skill. @ecogreenleaves you mentioned animals. What animals are you planning on raising in Alaska?

Somehow I'm thinking members on this site aren't quite so gullible.

 

I'm thinking strip mining gold through a giant sluice and sieve set up isn't part of the plan.....

That's the part I like. Big machines and fritters fried in bearfat and lots of pretty gold!

 

So what are the details?
Mainly what's paying for it, what's powering it, what's keeping people from freezing to death in the winter?

I think she may have been a hit & run. But if you would like to give your two cents on going off grid in Alaska, I would be interested. We know that @MountainMariner was almost off grid with his location. I have always wondered if someone off grid in Alaska would have success raising livestock or even chickens. I think there would be a huge issue of wildlife wiping out the folk. Probably be easier to just hunt for all your meat.

 

Romantic visions of Alaska vs the brutal reality of the climate. Climate that is lethal in the winter.

Along the coast, you can (try to) live 'off-grid' but the life is not easy. I would rather go off-grid in HI (waves to Hanzo)

Many folks lack the basic skills, and frankly the work ethic to live in a true subsistence/homesteading life.
Locally, the wannabes are called "End of the Roaders".

It rarely ends well.

That said, there are a noticeable number of folks in SouthEast or South Central who make a go of the 'off-grid' lifestyle.
They have a garden, maybe even a large greenhouse, run a wood stove for heat, solar panels for some electric service, but live within a short drive to stores, hospitals and schools....

I' m sure @BTPost has some neighbors that have that lifestyle. I'd like to hear his take....

 

This is one of the top reasons I do not live in maine and I do live in new Mexico.

 

Even if I could I would spend at least a year getting to know some one before getting that connected..

Cold and dark are not the problem, those i deal with well. heat drains me .
One of my favorite jobs was working at ski slopes running the snow making equipment and working on the cats and other equipment.
A lot of work is done at night in a big rush against temperature, time and weather, about like farming, except the harvest is in the sales office.
People with low self worth give us their money so they can risk their lives racing down a hill over and over till they hurt them selves.
If they don't do it the first day they come back and do it again .and again .
I prefer snow shoeing to skiing unless there is a serious destination ,or S&R event ,then it's cross country skiing or on the moes.
If I had a shift that ended at midnight ,i'd dawn the snow shoes and head up the slopes and enjoy the sounds of the night and the beautiful views all around, Star light is more than enough .

 

Having lived in alaska off grid it's not so easy, life is HARD up there but if you choose a location it might have to be in the Kenai Peninsula maybe down by Homer. Yeah Fairbanks is nice but the summer is fast and the dark days can really take their toll on a person unless you can stay active.
