Was walking back through one of the fields with the dogs this morning and spotted a bunch of mushrooms that im pretty sure were not there 2 days ago. And ive never seen these ones ever, here or anywhere else in the 16 years ive lived here... so got back home.. did some research... yeah... edible and tasty! (Important, since just because you can eat something dosent always mean your gonna want to....) Agaricus campestris. Aka field mushrooms. Apperently used to be quite common. And since you can bet large sums of money on nobody eles around here picking and eatting them, i should hopefully have an ongoing supply for the next few months
Be very very careful! Mushrooms can often have twins that can fool even the best wild food foragers. Some can kill with just a taste. Others will make you sick with just a taste. I am neither a biologist, chemist, or toxologist but I love life, and would be very wary of eating these mushrooms.
No worries, the closest toxic “mimic” here is actully pretty easy to tell the difrence as long as your paying attention(actully I dont get how people have mistaken them for the field mushrooms since there are some pretty obvious differences )
Save a handful of the largest ones, let the mature until almost falling over. ie; stem is getting weak. Pick them, take them home and dry them upside down on a window sill or other gentle place.Next spring, or even indoors, crush them over a growing media of some sort. Voila! More mushrooms.
Dont think that would work as these ‘shrooms like open grassy fields. Made mushroom & smoked garlick omlets for breakfast very tasty! Not deed yet....
So do cows. Aside that, there used to be a commercial mushroom growing industry a bit south of here. You knew you were in the area by the smell of cow as you drove past the completely enclosed barns. Shrooms like it dark for some reason.
Except these mushrooms prefer open fields that havent been grazed recently. Last time there was anything on it was about 10-12 years ago, they had a couple horses there, nothing since, just been cutting it the last 3-4 years for natural hay
Sundays awsome find! Yeah... I aint eatting these ones! Fly agaric. Really big ones to, the smaller one was about the size of my palm.
