Day or night, I'll see you.

One of my babies; Barnes Precision, 5-18x, 920nm illumination with the spotlight; out to few hundred meters.

920nm doesn't glow at night. The deer notice the glow with the 800nm illuminators and run. Using the 920nm IR, we can watch them eating corn.

    My first AR15 build*...
    A Bushmaster upper with a 16 inch barrel , 1-9 twist...
    Anderson lower...
    Grey Magpul furniture...
The target was at 50 yards...shots were fired off hand no support....Not the best shooting , but pretty good for my first time out with this carbine...
Ammo was Lake City Ball 55 grains...
    * I need to post a new picture..as the carbine now is set up in my preferred way....
OD green A2 rifle stock , OD green pistol grip and handguard...with a Daniel Defense A1 peep sight....

The origins of this picture can be found here: The old "Mattel" question... - The FAL Files

I believed it to be true as a teen as did one of my brothers who served in Vietnam.

When I went thru Basic, we were shooting nothing but the infamous 'blue primer' ammo. I guess by then the Army had dumped it into the training logistics path. Of course, the Air Force 'trainers' I had said nothing about this or the other multitude of teething problems with the Plastic Fantastic Wonderweapon.

The M-4 of today is IMO an entirely different weapons system that the original (bastardized) crap bought der Whizz Kids in DoD 'management'.

I would note my son, on his second tour in the sandbox, carried a shotgun as a primary (CQB) and an AK-74 folding stock for a secondary. It they patrolled outside of built up areas, he humped the SAW. I was impressed with the latitude the Corps (at least in his unit) showed when it came to individual choices. Not that everyone fought over humping a SAW.....

I'm just happy he got home more or less in one piece and alive when so many - too many - have not.

Personally I think the "Mattel Myth" is :
Just because the M16 series of rifles were the among the first issued rifles to use a "plastic" or non wood stock.
( Generally speaking and as originally designed , not as a experiment or a material saving method. )

Mattel did have a toy rifle out during the Vietnam war time period , that looked a lot like the issue M16 / M16A1 and that could be one of origins of the myth...GI's making light or fun of the new issued rifle with a stock that looked and may have felt "toy like" when compared to a M1 or M14 rifle....

Again...just a guess on my part...

I had one of those - it was awesome and like all my toy firearms I had to treat it like it was real.

I actually carried a plastic/rubber M-16 out at Camp Mackall for training. Weighed the same as the real thing....for training use to simulate the weapons size and weight.

Instructors told us that they had some issues with the locals taking students weapons while on long range land nav.......
This was their solution to losing real weapons.....LOL.

I remember those 'Rubber Duckies" from basic and other schools while in the Army....
Even as a kid in the Army , it felt weird to me carrying a "toy" rifle while receiving "Army Training"....
( Insert best Bill Murray voice here...:D )

My AR's and AR type rifles. I found a few I had forgotten I had and couldn't find some, I'm pretty sure I gave away or they are stuffed in the back of one of the safes. 20190905_190748[1]. 20190905_191647[1]. 20190905_192151[1]. 20190905_192647[1].

It's not done yet, but spurned on by CMMG's .22 AR pistol, I got to work with some spare parts and came up with my own version of Han Solo's blaster/Space Broomhandle. "Nothing like a good blaster on your side, kid."
This is the look I was going for:
    Blaster.
At least mine has the scope- 2x Tasco pistol scope from the 80's and still going strong.
