Obama Calls for Permanent Assault Weapons Ban to Combat Inner-City Violence Sunday , July 15, 2007 CHICAGO — Standing before a church congregation that has witnessed inner-city violence firsthand, Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama said Sunday that more must be done to end a social ill that is "sickening the soul of this nation." Obama told churchgoers at the Vernon Park Church of God on Chicago's South Side that too many young lives are being claimed by violence and more must be done to combat the problem. "From South Central L.A. to Newark, New Jersey, there's an epidemic of violence that's sickening the soul of this nation," the Illinois senator told the crowd. "The violence is unacceptable and it's got to stop." Nearly three dozen Chicago students have been killed this year, according to Chicago Public Schools. Obama said that figure is higher than the number of Illinois serviceman who've died in Iraq in 2007. "We need to express our collective anger through collective action," Obama said. He said the government needs to permanently reinstate an assault weapons ban and close regulatory loopholes that protect unscrupulous gun dealers. He also said government should support and fund more after-school programs to keep kids off the streets. But some of the burden must also be shouldered by residents who need to do more to raise and protect at-risk children, he added. "We have an entire generation of young men in our society who have become products of violence, and we are going to have to break the cycle," Obama said. "There are too many young men out there who have gone down the wrong path." He later added, "There's a reason they go out and shoot each other, because they don't love themselves. One of the absolute smartest people I know sent me this in my email... I don't think I will discuss politics with her anymore....I had to keep going back and re reading it...to make sure I read it right... It came with an attachment with a speech ...not including it.. I'm not quite sure what to make of it...or how to talk to her, even if I should... it looks long, but really only takes a few minutes to read. it should remind people why he was so incredibly impressive at the ' 04 dem. convention. this is a man that can deal with the issues of this country and the world with character, dignity and awareness. hillary is on the right track, but i believe that he is walking the path of decency and moving forward. i also am convinced that this is a man that was BORN to lead us at this point in our history~ in the same way that nelson mandela was BORN to lead south africa out of darkness and ghandi was BORN to teach the world the power of the spirit as opposed to the sword.

It always amazes me how you can take two of the brightest people, give them all the information on any given subject/problem and they will draw the exact opposite conclusion and propose diametrically opposed solutions... which is, of course, exactly why I am NOT going to let half of my brightest friends into my compound after the SHTF... they can stay outside and see how much safer the AWB makes them then... heh heh
Which is why we have agreed to disagree...and to not talk politics anymore.....I'd like to keep her as a friend, as she really makes me think...and gets me going....AND makes me stronger in my beliefs, when I find myself getting somewhat complacent..... But the Obama thing? Nah.....we will never, ever, NEVER think alike on that score.... She is an RN, and should have been a Dr...She is the absolute best diagnostician I have ever known, and worked with.....I've seen her look at patients and diagnose them when Dr's couldn't do it after weeks of testing....and has an extensive knowledge of herbal medicine , and homeopathic remedies.....Pity, as that knowledge could come in really handy......... Just like to show the other side....or stir the pot....from time to time....
CRC. If she is that good then save a spot for her. She will come around it may be when Rome is burning but she will come around. The most you can do now is just let her know that while you two have view points that are opposite sides of the world you will keep a chair warm for her. She may actually help you get a few things or give you ideas because she considers it cute or whatever but as long as she gives you ideas thats the main thing. Take care Be safe Poacher.
Thanks Poacher...she IS that good... There was a man in the hospital ...been there 2 and 1/2 weeks..Very influential guy in the community....no one could find out what was wrong and he was getting worse and worse.... My friend took ONE look at him...not even his chart...and told the Dr's.. "He has pneumocystis"...they told her she was nuts, and asked did she KNOW who he is???? They ran the bloodwork for HIV...he was in full blown AIDS, and died 2 months later...... I've seen her diagnose time and time again , when we worked together in nursing... If I'm ever really sick? I want her, or someone just like her, taking care of me.......
