Are We Better with the Internet? This is a serious question. Have our lives become better now that we have instant access to books, music, news? Are we better as humans since this technology has become common in our countries? Is it ruining us as a society?Do you know people who are not plugged in and live their lives without going on-line daily? Do they seem happier?

Here's a highly quotable quote from myself.

"If we didn't have the internet, all of you would already be living in a total Orwellian nightmare, as the corporate elite would have had no opposition to hold them back."

But, like Sec said, some "bad folks" are using it like a weapon for their own interests. Net neutrality is essential, and I am sad to say we're slowly losing this fight as more people are being sucked in by social media and smart phone use. There are fewer PC users every day, discounting the professional sector who only use PC's for work related tasks and the occasional porn fest during breaks.

Are we better with the Internet ??
I was going to say ,,,NO.
But those are good posts by Broker and Sec . It's how you process and use the information you are able to collect from the net that will dictate its value .
But I still say we could get along without it , but if it goes belly up , it's been a pleasure knowing you all .

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

The internet is neutral. Like any technology it can be used for good or evil, according to the actions and intentions of the user.

I like having the totality of human knowledge available at my fingertips. I like being able to speak instantly with almost anyone.

I'm not as enthusiastic about cute cat videos on Facebook, and I purely hate spam.

The Internet is much like cars and firearms: Useful to those who use it wisely with consideration for the safety of self and others. It is also a bit like alcohol...it can make sociable interaction for some easier...abused, it tends to expose oneself as just an antisocial d!ck.

The internet is useful for doing reseach...and as entertainment...but the ageless advisory: Caveat Emptor applies to the accuracy and the quality of the information that it provides. A cooking recipe...probably not much of a problem if the recipe is faulty...as a source of medical / Legal (and other professional ) advice...consult someone with appropriate accreditation, qualifications and experience in the real world.

We could all probably survive quite adequately without the internet, but it would be danged difficult finding such a fine collection of conspiracy theorists as is to be found here at SM without it!

It has turned into a more efficient way to make people stupid.

Efficient....yes....but effective? That depends upon the predisposition of individuals to allow themselves to be rendered even more stupid than they probably already are.

To quote you quoting yourself, I see it as the opposite. I believe the internet is rushing us faster ahead to a society we dislike. I do believe the internet is rushing us towards an over-active PC society. I believe if the internet was not here that people would be more invested in their community. Local businesses are drying up because people can order on-line. Information is coming at people so fast they fail to stop and think, question.

It seems to take the human face-to-face interaction out of society. I saw two kids sitting next to each other on a bench a while ago, and they were not talking to each other, they were texting each other!

At restaurants, I see families walk in, sit down, order their food, then the phones come out, and nobody is talking to anyone!
I see how rude and discourteous people have become. I think it's because of how easy it is to be rude when it's done by internet, and they forget how to act when someone is standing right in front of them.

The internet is an inanimate object, it cannot make us do anything. Rude people would be rude with or without the internet.

Volunteerism is at an all time low, investing in one's community is a conscious choice which the self centered and self serving decide is below their miserable place in life.

You can't blame the ills of the people on an electronics service.

I do not accept TEXT, text me and I will call back.
Texting is a tool of the sociopath used to control others.

It is a double-edged sword but just the ability to have so much knowledge at your fingertips in seconds is worth all the problems it might create, most of the problems are created by ourselves anyway by doing stupid things.

The internet is just like many things in life pain, pleasure, tv, music, propaganda news both sides we can simply turn it off. We are all old enough to remember life before the net and if we all think really hard we can if we choose to live without it. It like the Blade Runner said its either a Benefit of a Hazard if its a Benefit it's not my problem.

I see the 'net as a good thing. Then again, I don't use any of the so-called Social Media crap that infests the web.

And in a twist that many may never realize, the 'Internet' is the engine of change that lead to:
    • Lower phone bills (flat rate nationwide calling)
    • me having video chats mit der grandkinder in TX (eat your heart out AT&T)
    • the ability to procure parts for my ham gear that are simply not found in Alaska without having to use a catalog/snail mail and wait for weeks for the (hopefully right) part to arrive
    • having almost instant access to out of print contemporary book useful for historical research
    • Google Earth. Yes, Google is the new Darth Vadar, but I love to cruise around the world via the web/....
