    i sent my son a NEW 600 det 07400 he used it 3 times ,the last time he did al most killed him """ the new clips that hold it all together poped off after it locked up on him (it is a big deal when he was disarming a I E D ).

    i have 3 new gerbers with the clips and will put them in a box and go buy some other brand.

    Had a Gerber tool with zero clearance between the handles, which left permanent scarring after gripping oily nuts and bolts with all my might ( I know it was the wrong tool, but you had to be there) then slipping off and pinching the fleshy meat of my palms until it raised big purple blood filled blisters.. I finally executed it by placing under the point of a concrete jackhammer on one of our bobcats..The destruction was strangely satisfying (sombitch won't bring tears to my eyes or any elses again)...[own2]

    I've always been disappointed with the steel that leatherman uses for its blades. I don't know what it is, but I have never purchased a model from them because I felt the steel used by other companies was higher quality.

    Might want to take a look at Bucks new multi tool. Other options could be SOG power pliers, which seem above leatherman in terms of quality (just my opinion, take it or leave it), and SAK Swiss tool. The Swiss army tool is a heavy bugger and expensive, but is the one I covet due to its high quality.

    I have the suspension model and I love it. While I may not be using it as hard as he is, I have had no problems with mine, save one. The holster it came with fell apart after about 5 months.

    How about contacting the company and seeing if they will fix the problem, never hurts to ask.

    I've had em all, they each have their own problems. The strength of one is a weakness of another. I have a drawer back home with broken leatherman, gerber, and various other brands. It all depends on how you use them. Leatherman tends to have the opening for the blades on the outside of the handle that end up digging into your palm.
    Right tool for the job, otherwise, pay the consequences!

    I was pointing more towards tango's statement. I caught a guy trying to use a cheater bar on his gerber about a year ago to take a stubborn nut loose, then bitched when he broke it and then tried turning it into supply to draw another one!

    The sole advantage to a multi-tool is that you are likely to have it on you when you have nothing else to do the job with. That is their value and their deficiency; they are not designed to over-haul a Detroit. I would imagine that more creative repairs have been done to one degree or another, with multi-tools than almost anything else except maybe bailing wire or duct-tape, and when combined with the judicious application of duct-tape, bailing wire, and prayers, have kept the world on it's slightly askew axis.

    I was mainly pointing out the painful; design flaw( no clearance between the handles) in the one I had;
    once you start wearing one they are hard to live without ;especially for a factory maintenance guy . I know You shouldn't be using pliers( or vise grips or a pipe wrench) to rebuild an engine...b::

    The one that I really enjoyed the most was a Sears Brand multi tool. I used and abused that for a couple of years. It finally gave up the ghost and I thought "Wow I have found the tool" go figure I went back to get another one and they had quit selling them so I got a leatherman. I'm not quite as happy with the leatherman but for most light duty chores they are adequate.
    I do have a brand new one still in package that sits quietly in the bob. I figure that way I will always have a spare if the one on my side dies. Or if I choose to I have a brand new nice and perfect one to start off with if I desire if and when I have to use the bob.

    In the end though they are a tool thats designed to be a light duty tool. As we all know nowdays if something says light duty then it's going to hold up to about the minimum standards. Ahh for the days of over enginering

    Take care Be safe Poacher.

    I have a Gerber Diesel and love it, although I've never owned a Leatherman so I am bias at this point.

    I like the fact that I can extend the pliers with one hand if needed and my blade is easy to put an edge on.

    I have a gerber deisel also. I trust it pretty well. I miss the older on the TSA got from me though. This one has blades and others that lock open and the slide lock is partly plastic. I dont care for that. but other than that its great.
