  5. I have been on the receiving end of my late XYL's vitriolic invective. No matter how irrational she would become, I knew I would have to look at myself in the mirror and there would be no justification for a physical response. After she witnessed one episode,I had a medical doctor ask me how I held my temper when my wife would get lit-off. Partly was upbringing , partly was having witnessing my eldest sister's disastrous first marriage. Ya can't hit female except in self defense.

I would go farther than the above.... You can NOT shoot a woman except after she shoots you first... and with AlaskaChick, I would already be DEAD....

Geez, that's funny! And, I have to agree with him. I would never hit a woman unless for some reason she hit me, and I don't mean just slap me, but hit me to hurt, then she is no longer a lady in my eyes and is simply a threat. I had one club me in the head when I wasn't looking with a can of chili, went to my knees, damn near knocked me out! I sure couldn't have defend myself or I would have hit her back but it scared her so bad that it was almost worth getting clobbered! LOL! I think of her every time I open a can of chili and laugh! LOL!

I could never raise my hand in an unloving manner to my Bride, NEVER! She and I don't fight in the first place, and even when she is really mad, she doesn't get violent.
Now, having said that, there was a female of the species who tried to stab me with an ice pick and I broke her wrist and put a extra dimple on her cheek for the trouble. Apparently she thought she heard some one say something about her boyfriend and being a little drunk, she lashed out at me, bad move on her part! I felt pretty bad about what was an instinctive reaction to a threat, but none the less, she meant to kill me, and I justify what I did on that!
There are some females who really cross the line of gentlemanly conduct and need a good pop in the kisser, though I try to avoid the known ones, some times it just cannot be helped. I was accosted by a bulldyke at a gas station while fueling my boat, apparently she felt I had taken up too much space with the truck and boat and she couldn't be bothered to move her car to another lane, she got very "manly" and started advancing and challenging my as I refused to stop and move! I got to the point of warning her, you step into my personal space and woman or no, your gonna get hurt, you wanna play at being a man, you'll take a beatin like a man! She had a sudden case of fear and common sense and decided to get back in her car and wait! Yes, I would have knocked her in the choppers!

Spousal abusers usually have no difficulty in finding reasons for what they do to justify to themselves for what they do...however what they usually fail to recognise is that the abuse they mete out is not proportional to the offence that triggers the abuse, that the abuse reflects on their lack of self control, and that their conflict management / resolution skills suck.

Ashamed to say I back handed my X wife Once and only once. I had just walked in the door and was a day late getting home and out of nowhere she planted a 12" x12" cast iron skilled in my chest and broke 3 ribs and was lining up for another whack and well I sent her flying across the room. Spent the part of the night in the hospital and the other part in the County lock up for domestic battery, went to see a lawyer after I was released and filed for divorce. Right or Wrong I have always felt bad for hitting her as hard as I did.......... broke her jaw and cheekbone :( Instinct and reflexive actions are hard to overcome. And yeah I was the evil wife beating bastard in the community after that, at least the judge was fair and dismissed the whole domestic battery thing.

A threat is a threat , no matter what gender it is coming from...And needs to countered with appropriate measures equal to the "level" of the threat.
( Not necessarily speaking of violent measures here either... )

With that said... abuse of a spouse or other family member is not the same as the above.
    Abuse is a crime...defending yourself shouldn't be.

  14. Sorry about side-tracking the post. My life experiences I guess. My XYL's history involved abuse, childhood and marital, although her Ex claimed to be afraid of me. Don't understand that at all. And my sib's marriage was bad enough she was afraid for her life, only time I ever thought I might really have to shoot someone.

My poor baby bro is in a bad marriage, his wife is extremely abusive verbally and she has cheated more then once! I cannot understand why he is still married to her let her then he knows he is going to be stuck supporting her the rest of his life! She is every kind of foul you can imagine, and the things I have personally heard her say would have earned a left hook to the chops were she a man! It's not my fight, but it pains me to see it taking place, and my bro continues to support her despite the fact they are "seporated" but still occupying the same residence! No one deserves to be around that kind of person or subjected to that kind of abuse!

You couldn't be more wrong about dv chel. Our data suggests that most abusers aren't out of control. It isn't a case of anger management, but abusers use violence as a control mechanism. In most cases I would just let a myth go, but this myth is surprisingly damaging across the board. If dv was simply a matter of having bad temper, abusers would equally hit their co-workers as well as their spouses (and, yes, there are quite a few of these cases, too).
In any case, this isn't talking about the pattern of abuse one would expect in domestic violence, but rather the idea that men shouldn't hit women. I honestly wonder what happens when feminists realize they have probably changed the rules of engagement for the younger generations. Nearly all of our data suggests that most inner relational violence that isn't dv is started by women. I can certainly link studies if anyone is interested. My curiosity is what that looks like when women who have been trained to assume they can slap men or knee men in the groin end up in jail for assault or worse, end up in the hospital with broken bones.

You are right, Seepalaces, in that much spousal abuse is quite deliberate and does not necessarily involve physical force; abusers have a much wider palette of controlling options, than simply blunt trauma and physical intimidation. I consciously did not differentiate the gender of spousal abuse perps...individuals of both genders can be abusers and victims. I have seen gaslighting What is gaslighting? in action....it's just as damaging as physical abuse, and it can be difficult to remedy.

I appreciate that stand-up comedians will often draw their material from controversial and taboo subjects, and sometimes the value of what they explore sometimes start conversations that result in self reflection, but I have found, over time that there's not much that's genuinely funny about such subjects...domestic violence and spousal abuse being one of those topics. I have seen, and experienced too much of it as a child, and as a teenager to want to replicate such behaviour.
