99% plus, IMO...for the same reasons I stated earlier. The average Joe or Jane Blow don't have a clue what percentage of silver old coins may or may not have...but a Silver Eagle, Maple Leaf, etc (and even rounds and bars for that matter), leave little doubt about the percentage or weight of silver they contain. The only real difference between a round and a coin is that one is allegedly certified as currency by some government...again something that might make the difference when attempting to trade with someone who knows nothing about PMs.

I have a great scale and calipers if I am buying for a source at say a gun show or garage sale.

I would never buy off of ebay for that very reason.

Silver is at a 2 year high.
Why is anyone even considering buying silver?

Some of us own it much higher than it is now, so it looks cheap now.:(

I own a lot of them as well but they went bankrupt. Don't know where to buy them now.

Right now the market is $2 over spot. So you are looking about about $22 an ounce minimum for 99.9999%
So $500 only buys you about 22 ounces today.
At a more normal price of $15 an ounce $500 buys 33 ounces.
Junk silver is a little cheaper.
Since everyone is buying I guess I will start selling too.

Two part question: So we wake up one morning and the dollar has collapsed, totally worthless. Cash, bank accounts, retirement accounts, all worthless. How will PMs be valued when there is no dollar reference? How long will it take to establish some basis to use PMs as a medium of exchange, if ever? Are you going to swap a can of beans for an ounce of silver? Can't eat the silver. You could be setting on a mountain of it and starve to death. As an alternative, what is a compact medium to store wealth that is most likely to have instant recognized value post SHTF. Compact is key. I'm thinking bullets, whisky, seeds and smokes.

I have Cases of beans , so I take that swap !! how many ounces of AG have ya ?

If you only have PM's & no food storage etc , Yur Fvcked , If I have 100K in Fiat paper , but do PM's to store the savings in a real forum then ,I might be able to recoup more than plastic / ugly USD

    Most likely scenario,
Dollar won't collapse over night. what cost 20 bucks (one oz Ag) last month will now cost 22 .. by the end of a year it'll be 40 bucks (still only ounce) for the same. That would be hyper inflation. Loss of confidence in the FRN. Other currencies would probably lead ours down the drain.

EMP solar flare, grid down, no telco no banking
Cash will be king. No plastic money going to be used
Regions will have their own pricing based on supply and demand. Barter (beans, bullets, booze, bullion) will be for those w/o cash in hand. Who knows what a dollar will buy or for that matter what an ounce of PM will get ya.

PM's are NOT a prep for SHTF (IMHO) but rather for uncertain economic times .. like run away inflation.
SHTF .. you'd better have barter .. PM's may play a role but I wouldn't count on it until things settle down and realistic trade and industry resumes. PM's are seen as storing value in a small easily transportable package.

Would you rather carry around a backpack full of 20 dollar bills .. or a few ounces of gold in your jockstrap through a shady neighborhood?

I have been thinking common coins may be the way to go. One can buy a roll of pre-1964 quarters.

For how Much ?? for the roll ?? Because it's only weight is in its value , not as a dime or what the coin book says .
Id watch that one , and do different types of silver !

I wouldn't buy silver quarters, nickels and dimes. the vast majority of people only want to give you face value for them.

Since nickels are made of nickel and not silver, even the old ones, we used to pick them up with a magnet as kids.

The vast majority of people are going to die! As I said years ago on another site, "Please have all of your gold, silver, guns, etc. laid out so that WE don't have to waste time searching for them...there are a lot of other houses on your block".

If SHTF, how are you going to tell if someones silver is real? But a pre-1964 quarter is real and many people know its value. It is advised to have some precious metals in your portfolio. If collapsed happen, what would you be more willing to accept in trade, a silver eagle or old coins?
