A bit dated, but illustrates the worth of the electoral college. A 39 second read you will want to pass on.

In their infinite wisdom, the United States' Founders created the Electoral College to ensure the STATES were fairly represented. Why should one or two densely populated areas speak for the whole of the nation?

The following list of statistics has been making the rounds on the Internet. It should finally put an end to the argument as to why the Electoral College makes sense.

Do share this. It needs to be widely known and understood.
There are 3,141 counties in the United States.
    Trump won 3,084 of them.
    Clinton won 57.

There are 62 counties in New York State.
    Trump won 46 of them.
    Clinton won 16.
Clinton won the popular vote by approx. 1.5 million votes.InIn the 5 counties that encompass NYC, (Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Richmond & Queens) Clinton received well over 2 million more votes than Trump. (Clinton only won 4 of these counties; Trump won Richmond)
Therefore these 5 counties alone, more than accounted for Clinton winning the popular vote of the entire country.
These 5 counties comprise 319 square miles.

The United States is comprised of 3,797,000 square miles.
When you have a country that encompasses almost 4 million square miles of territory, it would be ludicrous to even suggest that the vote of those who inhabit a mere 319 square miles should dictate the outcome of a national election.
Large, densely populated Democrat cities (NYC, Chicago, LA, etc.) DO NOT and SHOULD NOT speak for the rest of our country!
And...it's been verified and documented that those aforementioned 319 square miles are where the majority of our nation's prolems foment.

That the founders saw this as an issue at the inception of the country is insight into their genius. Thank God they didn't just shoot from the hip in this nation's inception or copy the European model like so many other countries.

    Atlanta for GA

    and so on.

PEople pushing to bypass the EC are really pushing for mob rule.

Or Majority rule, which the founders found to be dangerous. Thus, a Representative Republic... That was before lobbying became an industry.

Strange as I remember as an arrogant and stupid young man asking myself, "Why is the electoral college even needed, one man - one vote!" Wow! How times change with knowledge and experience. LOL!!!

Without the Grand Compromise, electoral college, slaves counting 3/5 th for census, 3 branches of government, etc, there would not have been a United States and we had found out the hard way that the Confederation would not work. The biggest mistake in modern politics was the direct election of the senate. They were supposed to be selected by the states and to represent the interests of the state and not the mob. Nearly everything in the compromise was meant to limit the power of the masses in the city to destroy the common good under the leadership of some demigog or political idea. Yes, they were afraid that in time we might end up with a Nancy P or a E Warren, and tried to render them harmless.

So, by way of thinking, each State should also employ the same ideal, where the counties each hold equal representation within that State, thus breaking the strangle hold the big cities hold over the State's elections and such! Maybe a push to bring this wonderful idea to each State would hold greater effect on local issues as well as national, and would allow more equal footing for states that normally don't hold any real equity Like OryGun, a state every one forgets when National issues come!

I'm still amazed at the knowledge and foresight that the writers of our Constitution had . For that document to have been written 232 years ago , and stood the test of time and covered just about every issue we've had in that amount of time , to me , is just unbelievable . You can tell those men really put their heart and soul into that document . It would be a great disservice to those men , and every man , woman and child today to allow anybody to alter that document just so that it would fit an unjust agenda .

We tend to forget that the men who wrote the constitution had a lot more incentive than we have today no matter what we may think. They had a lot of experience with a royal system and had risked everything to change it, had won a war and set up a confederation that was worse than a sackful of cats, the money system had collapsed, they could not raise an army, the question of who would control the un settled lands was total chaos, the English government was not recognizing their government and in a few years would try to retake the colonies, the large states were doing their best to absorb the smaller states, to the north of them were the British, to the south was Spain in Florida, to the west were the French, and several of the Indian confederations were almost as powerful as the government and if armed by one of the other world power and using their claims, posed a serious threat to parts of the country. Their study of the classic democracies had shown them that all of them failed in the long run and either ended up controlled by a more powerful state or by some internal group. The whole thrust of the Constitution is to prevent what some present day groups wish, the power was to be distributed in such a way that the majority could not dominate the minority. Their fear was political, social, and religious and almost everything in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights is designed to protect the individual from the will of the group. They also set up a set of protections for the individual, religious freedom, right to a speedy trial, trial by your peers, etc, to prevent the majority from using the law as a method to control your freedoms. Read a dozen books on the Constitution and still finding little treasures in it each time I read it.

These two quotes illustrate the situation rather well.
Point 1: Educated and capable of cogent thought and discussion..
Point 2: They rightly considered the majority of the citizenry "out of the loop" so to say, in that day to day living took up their time and energy. I'm reluctant to say they were ignorant, after all, they had the prescience to send well educated and thoughtful representatives to the meeting halls.

With a great deal of displeasure, neither point is widely recognized these days. Without naming names there are some pretty obvious wastes of good skin trying to make decisions for those of use deplorables dwelling in flyover country.

I've said it before and I'll say it again here, "The Founding Fathers were the smartest men that ever lived"! Occasionally some fool will suggest that we should adopt a more modern Constitution, and my question is "who would write it"?

  13. Hmm, That point seems to make a lot of sense to me. I like it. But the real question is? How do we go about it? how do we make it happen? Any idea's anyone?
