    Dog Chew Stew
[IMG] If you have dogs, be sure to stockpile unflavored rawhide chews. These unflavored rawhide chews are not necessarily for the dog. Depending on the severity and duration of the event, rawhide dog chews can be transformed into a nutritious base for soups and stews. Just boil the heck out of 'em and use the gelatinous glop as a broth base with whatever else you have on hand that would make good soup. Seriously, how often have you read about lost explorers eating their boiled leather shoes? Julia Child and other chefs call this stuff 'aspic' and there are many recipes that use this as the starting point. If nothing else, this will keep your beloved dog fed, offering much more nutrition than simply having the dog eat the rawhide raw. Laugh if you must, but those who survived the siege of Leningrad will tell you that Dog Chew Stew beats starving to death.

Yes, the people in Greenland died while the "natives" while not prospering, stayed alive. No milk, cheese, bread, veggies, grew in Little Ice Age in Greenland, did not change their diet to the meat based one the natives used, argument has been made that collapse of Rome was at least quickened by the failure to quickly turn to growing new cold season crops when the climate changed.

We always save the bones, smoke and cure them! Makes for a hardy base, or as a soup. Add to a pot of water and boil down two or three times! Add in roots or other edible plants you find and your good! The hides can be treated much the same, best way is to boil them a bit, then scrape, peal and otherwise break the fibers down into a thick paste! Its also useful for a glue, especially on stuff using a sinue wrap to fasten! Can also laminate woods together and strengthen existing wood tools and handles, as well as repairs to gun stocks! Really handy knolage to have! Pro tip, take a bear every season and render down every thing you can, and save as much via canning, salt, or smoke curing! Bear is about the most useful animal for its bits and pieces out side of food, and its meat is really good to add to other things to improve them, or supplement limited quantities of what you have on hand!

Here we feed our ducks and chickens old broccoli stocks after they are done and gone into seed.
Birds eat all but stocks and the the dogs chew them to clean their teeth.
If we have a bunch of them left over , into the vermear chipper for fertilizer. ..

I dont feed my dogs rawhide chews. 2 reasons
1 most rawhide dog treats you get nowadays is prossesed in china and theres some pretty dodgy chemicals and toxic sh*t they can use in the prossesing that pretty much makes the rawhide chews dodgy as **** .
2 rawhides go very soft and pliable when chewed and make a seriously nasty choking hazard for dogs. I personally know several people that have come very close to loosing their dog and one that actully did due to the dogs swallowing the chew and it getting lodged in the throat.

Personally if I was going to go down that route, id be looking at stocking dried tripe sticks instead (but still watch where the’re processed) stinky as hell but I suspect that the nutritional profile is actully much better.... and you can always feed them to the dogs if your to chicken :p

I have a pressure cooker, save up all the bones till I have enough and then cook the ever-loving be- jeebies outa them. Bone broth is highly nutritious!

There's no apocalypse I can imagine that has my family eating Chinese dried tripe sticks.

The Earth has too many foraging options.

Those chew sticks are gross but what an interesting idea. I have forgot to considered a pet food store as a place to get SHTF food supplies. There is a gourmet pet food place down the road. They sell grain free, some freeze dried foods etc.. I know some of the stuff is edible because I used to buy doggie cookies and split it with the dog. It was oatmeal based.

I'm so glad you said that @Motomom34 ... I thought it was a different way of looking at food supplies as well. Hope I never have to go that route but it's another option for survival if needed.

I only see that stuff in the pet store as bait to catch bigger things to eat.

The dog chews and pet food make sense.

The tripe sticks were too funky sounding.

When I worked for Cargill Sweeteners most of our customers were human focused products but a few were for pet foods. Pet foods are human food grade because kids could get into it and eat it.
