In the past I purchased a really basic Garrett Ace 150 because I was going to be doing some landscaping around the house and being that the house was built basically built on the same site as a previous homestead that burned down I though I might find some old coins and relics.

I did find a few silver quarters and dimes from the early 60s (not as early as the homestead) an old watch that had been crushed, probably about 20 pounds of nails, beer cans, pull tabs, glass and ceramics and melted metal roofing.

I'm thinking about getting a better rig but no way wanting to spend a grand for this hobby. As Michigan doesn't have a whole lot of historical relics you are going to find on your own property unlike areas where the civil war or revolution war took place. ROI isn't going to happen.
Probably going to hit some poor rock piles in the UP this summer and see what copper might be left around after the crushers pulverized the mine rock. Also going to hit my sisters quarter section and look for some float copper as well.

What type of equipment are you running?
do you use a pin pointer?

    What was your best find?

I use a Minelab Quattro with a 10" coil and a 6" for deeper stuff. I paid about $600, only gotta find another $575 and it will have paid for itself.

I actually got into detecting a few years back and started buying different machines. Got more money in them than I’ll ever get out of them. Not sure where you’re at in Mich. but one guy I read about on a detecting forum does pretty well with jewelry on the beaches up there. A mid level with some good results is the Fisher models. An F-70 or F-75 is pretty adjustable to different situations. Mine labs do pretty good also. There’s so many out there that people swear by. It’s a lot of personal preference. I don’t go as much as I used to,, knees make it hard on me now days. But I definitely use a pin pointer.

Think I have an older Garrett GT350 I think is the model number.
Anyway rumor has it that Grandma buried a gallon jar of Morgans out at her place years ago.
That's my goal and hopefully I dont dig up an old blasting cap. ...lol

Modern Blasting Cap cases are made of Aluminum, wih Copper WIre for Electric Caps... the Lead Wides are usually 20 or 24 Gauge, which doesn’t make detection a simpe process... Caps made in the distant passed were made with Copper Cases, but that didn't last very long, due to the formation of Copper Fulminate, and Copper Azide when they aged... which are about a hundred times more sensitive to shock and heat...

Buddy of mine has a Minelab.
    I used it several times.
Worthless, especially in soils with a lot of naturally occurring metals such as magnetite.

I don't use one often ,having more productive demands on my time. the one I have is an old radio shack job ,I know it works but the need doesn't arise often.

I used to dabble in metal detecting but never go too deep into it. A few things to remember:

Some of the better units have a setting to ignore ferrous metals and sometimes aluminum so you're not beeping on every nail and beer can. There's not much of value made of these metals so you're not missing much.

Be careful where you do your metal detecting. It is strictly prohibited on many public lands, especially those of historical significance. It may sound petty but there is a point to it...they don't want people digging holes in, say, civil war battlefields.

    Zimmy Wait, I'm not ready!

I had a Garrett back in the 90's. My village is old and dates back 150 years. I dreamed of lost gold from the local boom years or finding the lost galleon on Padre Island.

I found uncountable old chains, pull tabs, and beer cans or bottle tops. I found an old looking button base once and some other basic household crap like hooks, trace bits, and square nails.

Financially, a silver dime and a 1981 penny.

I have a Minelab 705 I just brought out again. Love it. It hasn't paid for itself $$$ wise, but it sure has paid for itself in enjoyment and getting out in the fresh air. Best finds were a gold bracelet and a dos pesos silver coin from the 1860's (can't make out last number).

    Great hobby!

Well decided to go out today as the snow has melted and the ground is thawed at least down to detecting depth.

found old steel beer cans, pull tabs, scores of nails and 1 Sacagawea coin that I'm pretty sure the kids lost .. it's mine now.

Got a Garrett AT ordered, will be here Wed. Place I live on had an old homestead here at one time. When I plowed the garden, I turn up pieces of old dishes, chunks of what I fairly sure were once a cast iron stove, that type of thing. Curious to see what else shows up.

Also, old moonshiner lived in a cabin near my front gate prior to me buying the place....he supposedly kept his money in silver dollars, so there may be a stash around that area somewhere. Several old house sites in the valley...houses long gone, you see some remaining foundation stone, or Easter flowers blooming now that indicate somebody planted them long ago. Swimming hole down the valley in the creek been used for generations.....good place to hunt. Was an old one/two room school building on the corner of my road and the main road.....vacant lot now, but a lot of crap on it.....

So just within a mile/2 of the house, I have plenty of places to swing the head. I'm ready to get started !

@TnAndy I figured you already had one, to look for nails in the logs you run thru your mill....

Rarely run into nails, if it looks 'suspect' (like a fence was nailed to it), I cut off the first 4-5'. Do find a lot of bullets though....apparently the woods is a dangerous place :D

I've thought of getting an AT Pro. I like the waterproof capabilities of it. As I said earlier , I got bit by the detector bug a while back , and just started accumulateing detectors. Here is a list of what I know I have. Most of them , tucked away in a closet .
BH Pioneer 202 , out on loan,, probably never see it again
    Ace 250
    Whites Eagle Spectrum '90 model
    Tesoro Compadre
    Minelab E Trac
    2 Minelab 705's
    Technetics Eurotek Pro
    Fisher F-70
    Fisher CZ-7
The CZ-7 ,,, is a good beach hunting machine , handles the salt mineralization very well , I've actually detected and dug , with a strong signal, an iron spike , and a beer can at an actual 2 feet deep .
But with these detectors paying for themselves ,,, probably not in my lifetime . But I'm hoping in my near future , I'll have the time to play with them a little more.
