Bug repellents, what do you use? Do you have some in your get home bag? Many of us carry a get home bag but do you have bug repellent in it? Ticks have become a huge problem and the tick population has exploded. Getting bit by a tick can make one extremely ill and even cause death. What about mosquitoes? Are you protected from West Nile? I have read on SM that monkeys have a route to walk home if needed. Some routes through fields. So are you protected?

I have decided that it is important to have insect repellent in our bags. Our family hikes and we are often in wooded areas. Protection is a must. What do you carry or wear to repel these insects that can cause serious health issues? Some people use OFF or use Deet products. But in our home we choose to use less chemical, toxic repellents.

    Essential oils that repel-
Mosquitos – citronella, lemon eucalyptus, peppermint, lemon, eucalyptus, catnip, basil, clove, thyme, lemongrass, geranium, lavender
Fleas – cedarwood, citronella, eucalyptus, tea tree oil, lemongrass, lavender, orange, pine,
Ticks – rose geranium, juniper, rosewood, thyme, grapefruit, oregano

Here is an old fashion recipe for tick repellent:

Vinegar of the Four Thieves Insect Repellent Ingredients
1 32-oz bottle of apple cider vinegar
2 TBSP each of dried sage, rosemary, lavender, thyme, and mint
Quart-size or larger glass jar with airtight lid

Vinegar of the Four Thieves Insect Repellent Instructions

Put the vinegar and dried herbs into large glass jar. Seal tightly and store on counter or place you will see it daily. Shake well each day for 2-3 weeks. After 2-3 weeks, strain the herbs out and store in spray bottles or tincture bottles, preferably in fridge. To use on skin, dilute to half with water in a spray bottle and use as needed. Use whenever you need serious bug control!Note: This mixture is very strong and has antiviral and antibacterial properties. It can also be used as a tincture for any illness. For adults, dose is 1 tablespoon in water several times a day. For kids over two, the dose is 1 teaspoon in water several times a day.

Easy Homemade Mosquito, Bug and Tick Repellent for You and Your Dog
    Author: Melissa Malinowski, ND
    Serves: 4 ounces
    Ingredients
    • 2 ounces of distilled water
    • 1.5 ounces witch hazel or vodka
    • 10-20 drops total of essential oils, I usually blend 3-4 different oils together.
    • Be sure to include lemon eucalyptus oil, it has been shown to have the same effect as DEET.
    • Spray bottle. I love this 4 ounce glass bottle.
    • Optional - one small squirt of castile soap to help distribute the oil better (about ¼ teaspoon)
    • OR simply just use RepelAroma from YL
    Instructions
    1. Fill spray bottle with water.
    2. Add witch hazel or vodka to fill almost to the top, leave a gap to be able to shake thoroughly.
    3. Add 10-20 drops of essential oils to the bottle. The more oils you use, the stronger the spray will be
    4. Place sprayer top on bottle and gently shake.
    5. Spray on skin and clothes for you and head to tail for your dog, avoid eyes and mucous membranes.
    6. Note: This can double for a body spray and a room spray.
    7. You can also make a lotion. Use the essential oils and add to a lotion. This is my FAVORITE one
    8. OR simply just use RepelAroma from YL
    9. Apply 2–4 drops to your hands and pet onto your animal’s coat.*
    10. Add to a 1 oz. spray bottle and spritz generously on your animal’s coat or skin.*
    11. *Carefully apply according to the size and species of animal.
    12. General rule: Dilute more for smaller species.

Surprisingly, I use nothing. Mosquitoes and the like don't bother me whatsoever. They don't even land on me. But, while I am not molested by those little insects, everyone else around me is being carried off by them. I'm not sure why they don't bother me, honestly.

Houseflies, however, are as irritating as can be, to me. They love hanging out around my ankles, for some reason.

I use the standard DEET formulas in squirt bottles. Also the Cutter spray type. I am less bothered than others around me, but I do get bit. I find yellow flies in June the most painful and infuriating.
For the huge horseflies, I favor the .22LR snakeshot.

Here in SEA, one could contract Dengue Fever, Japanese Encephalitis, Malaria, or Chikungunya. However, in my two decades of living in this part of the World (Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia), I have only heard of, and personally witnessed, cases of Dengue Fever.

    • Heres something I thought of a few years ago , and wanted to try it out , but seemed to have forgotten about it till now , maybe some here could tell me if they have any experience or input on this.
    • Cedar trees have a natural repellent for some insects , I was wanting to try possibly blending the leaves of the tree , chip some branches , and soak them in water , maybe boil it down , then mix with water and use as an insect spray. I may try this and see if it works..

Bumping this thread because I just pulled a tick off my dog this morning. It may be Spring but ticks are still out there and ready to leach on. I need to make up some spray and start using it. I know there is also a thread on here of how to protect your yard.
