I'm trying to figure out what to do about keeping music. I have never been a music freak. A few albums or cassettes and now a few CD'S. I was hoping to store music on SD cards. I have considered getting a satellite radio membership again but I wonder if they will be around in the future.
How do you keep and play your music? I guess I'm behind the times on this.

Make a play list for each and every cassette, record, CD and what ever, go on line and download the MP-3 and you can store them as play lists and copy them onto thumb drives or even burn them to CD's so you can always listen to your favs when ever!

I know you can also convert U-Tube to MP-3 but I have never tried it! Might be a slick way to do it if it works out! I have several play lists on my Laptop and with it linked with my phone, now have portable files I can play while out on the road through my cars sound system!

I have used 4K Video Downloader 4K Download – Free and useful applications for PC, Mac and Linux for converting Youtube Clips to MP4 format.
The basic app is downloadable free...extra features may cost FRNs. It gives you options for file size / resolution...the process is simple and multiple files can be downloaded simultaneously depending on your service's capacity.

How about buying or building a dulcimer and teaching yourself and your children how to play and learn some songs? Or a guitar, banjo, tin whistle, bag pipes, pick your choice, and continue at least a 30,000 year old tradition of playing, singing, and passing down music. I still enjoy Turn, turn, turn, a lot of good songs in Psalms, etc, and the fact that they were written a couple thousand years ago in some other language does not destroy my pleasure in listening to the modern versions. Ring around the rosey, pocket full of posies, all fall down, is a handy mnemonic for both the flea bites for the black death and the modern Lymes disease. My great grand children know it and if they see that bite mark with a red ring about, tell mommy and daddy at once as Lymes disease is all to common here. I use memory sticks for my music now as far as computers go. In my lifetime it has went from 78, to 33, to tape, to cd's, to walkmans, to Ipads, and no format seems to dominate over time, I just keep nothing of value, music, books, information, on the web, as I view it as Blowing in the Wind, and it may not be here tomorrow.

I played mine thru my (now 50 year old) component stereo system and dubbed to cassettes then years later I outputted those thru the same system to my trusty 6645 HP with it's super duper new cd read/write drive and with the help of 'Doze '95 media player I had a hunnert times the amount of music in the same size case in my truck. Now those Cds are converted onto sticks that would hold a million times the amount of tunes and sits in my pocket. I can now snap my fingers [touchdown] to In A Gadda Da Vida (long version) a thousand times between battery charges on my tablets. Ain't technology grand? [woot]

mp3 is fine for playing but is a lossy format, it loses quality ..

always keep the masters in a lossless format

CD, DVDs and blu-ray degrade over time, back them up if ya can

tape also degrades and tapes that are irreplaceable should be backed up

to prevent data loss ya should move yer most important data to new storage devices every 2 to 4 years

if the music is really important to ya, ya can burn them to M-Disc which in theory should last 1,000 years [ but the drives will not ]

shameless plug if ya need media players or audio players or PCs or other devices please PM me

  9. I pt my music, movies, tv shows, photos, and my digital books on external harddrives. They are portable, pad an ammo can and you can have a tablet or netbook in it along with several external hard drives and a battery pack with solar panel. Boom. Faraday cage that is both air and water tight. Add a ground cable and rod to it and it's a time capsule of information, entertainment, and memories.

I personally keep the vintage players for the recorded media I have saved including 78 RPM records and wind up players.
Almost from the time video began I have been saving movies and players . also have players in music 4 track 8 track cassette and so on.
Though my taste for entertainment has remained the same I still include things I am not particularly fond of for the sake of others that might enjoy them. I also have several instruments that don't need electricity to play. I play with several buy ear only, including a pump organ and spinet piano. I have sheet music for most of the instruments as well.
For fun, I have a stereopticon and a box full of vintage photos too, from the 1920s and 30s and 40s. At one time dad had the camera for taking the pictures but I can't find it yet.

Funny, But I inherited a Serious Record collection from my Grand Parents and Parents, as well as added records of my own along the way! I literally have 1/2 ton of records now! I also have a beautiful Westinghouse Hi-Fi Record player from about 1965 and it works amazingly well! I Only replaced the old speakers with a really good set of modern cones and we are still rockin, if anything, it sounds even better then ever, gives those old records a whole new life! At one time I was going to cash them all in, take the money and run, but decided that heck, I got all this music, might as well enjoy it for a while and then see what I want to do with it! I'm glad I did, found some stuff I had no idea existed, from places that are no longer around! You don't find that in the interwebs!

I think the tape itself (not the case) might be good tinder.

I bought an organ and some old-time sheet music with many classics. I see myself spending a lot of time with the family learning to play.

Watch out on the Organ playin, i started out at age 8 and i was addicted from then on! Started playing the Church organ by 10, and in my 20's and 30's had been given the opertunity to play several in European churches! Always wanted to play a "Theater Organ" but only got to play my first one in 2008! Now I have one, and its frickin awesome! Weighs 25 tons, and has its own theater! It will never be done, im always adding to it, but its amazing!

I have available a bunch of Organ music from my Mom and Grand Moms collections if any one wants it, i would be happy to send it to you, just cover shipping!

All my music lives on a NAS and the vast majority is in FLAC format. I can't tell you how many hours I have spent ripping CDs to FLAC! I still have a moving box full of classical a fellow gave me when I bought a console from him off Craigslist a few years ago.

I have a lot of vinyl as well including quite a few made from half speed masters. I don't play them often, but when I do it's for the experience not the sound. Some say that you get the best audio from vinyl, but I disagree. The best audio quality I heard, even when my ears were very good, came from well executed digital. I do have a couple of broadcast quality turntable projects that need plinths and tonearms and eventually I'll get around to.

I use JRiver Media Center as the front end because I like the way it organizes music but more importantly was designed around having the highest quality audio playback. It also runs on Windwoes (exploits the hell out of WASAPI), Linux, and Mac (I have the combination license) as well as smartphone apps that have secure access through a JRiver VPN system. I'm not going to use the remote access feature until I get a second NAS so I can separate my data files from media.

JRiver also works as a front end for movies, video, photos as well. And, yes I have plenty of those on my NAS as well.

Mrs. 3M and I each use JRiver on our laptops to access the NAS, and when I'm in my home mine controls a nice Yamaha and JBL system I listen to while I work.

I have two media servers, one in the living room and one in my mancave/media room. These drive high end stereos for sound and use TV's as their display. I use V-Link USB to SPDIF converters to provide electrical isolation from the power supply noise as well as to buffer the data stream. In the living room that goes straight to a DAC and then to an amplifier and speaker system. The mancave system goes to a high end separates setup with the main speakers driven by 1970's/80's Yamaha iron.

Living room setup - the rack has my HTPC, V-Link, DAC, and on the bottom amplifier.
    upload_2019-9-20_14-1-52.

And all tidied up with Paradigm speakers. I get a great audio system this way with a high Wife Acceptance Factor and thus don't have to settle for Bose cubes and a crappy digital receiver. And, yes, I know the Paradigm P's in the picture are crooked - they have since been adjusted.
