I got a line on a 1988 Chevy Blazer K-5 6.2L Diesel with only 122k miles on it. 1 owner, garage kept.

Question is, does this year have all the computer stuff on it or is it a SHTF vehicle?

I ask cause I have to drive 200 miles to look at it.

    Any help?

I thought diesels would run even after an EMP strike, because they don't have eletronic ignition, but I could be wrong.

I would highly suggest looking at other diesels, that 6.2L GM one was a P.O.S.

You are right ozarkgoatman, I was wondering if a 88 had the computer FUEL controls.

Anyway I'm going to go look at it tomorrow.

    Thanks all....AE

94 was the first year for computer control, and on 6.5 GM diesels. The 6.2 should have a mechanical cable or linkage rods controlling the injector pump. Computer control models have no mechanical connection with the accelarator, just wire connection to the computer.

If GM was still using the same diesel engine in 1988 that was in their early 80's diesel version Blazer/Suburban and pickups, you might want to steer clear of it. I know a lot of folks who converted their early 80's GM diesel's to gas.

As far as computer controlled goes, I don't know for sure if they were using that on their diesels. I know the gas versions of the same year are computer controlled on Blazers and trucks but nothing like today's vehicles.

    Hope that helps.

The early ones were sleved out chevy blocks. This one has a "Detriot Diesel motor".

Anyway it was sooo cherry that I bought it. I almost feel guilty when I paid for it. He had reciepts dating back 18 months for new batteries (2 a 24 volt system), AC compressor, alternator, radiator trans oil cooler, brakes, shocks and tires. No rust, just a few blisters that I will have repaired, and some rubber trim pieces on the door windows that I will replace. No dents and not a repaint either. (I know my cars)

Now I gotta find a veggi oil kit for it, might even start making my own fuel ;-)
Love the smell of french fries in the morning.

If all else fails, I have a 350 carbed gas motor in the shop, so if the deisel gives up I'll just put that in.

    Congratulations on the purchase. [beer]

Good to know that this vintage of Blazers/Trucks doesn't have the same engine as the early 80's. Every once in awhile I see this era of Blazer/Truck with a diesel and have turned my nose up at them, most of the one's I've seen were low mileage between $2K-$3K. Not that I need another K-5 Blazer with 2 in the stable already but a diesel would be a good addition without spending tens of thousands of dollars.

I'd be interested to know if the diesel version has the same 1/2 ton running gear, as the gas versions. Hate to ask you to get greasy.

Do you know which tranny and transfer case you have?

Gas versions have the 700r4, excellent tranny. For that year you could have either a 241 or 208 transfercase. If you have a 241 and it goes bad, replace it with the 208 transfercase the dimensions are the same and utilize the same tranny adaptor, just make sure they have the same # of splines. The 208 is GM's best chain driven transfercase.

For identifying the front and rear diffs. count the # of bolts on the cover plate, regular 1/2 ton running gear of that era will have the 10 bolt pattern cover plates.

I can't find a reference for the diesel version earlier than '94, no listings for diesel version Blazers.

It just started raining about a hour ago so the drive is the usual mudhole. So I will reply with I know (ain't much, real noob with the Blazer) without slobbering in the mud.

From what I have researched all of the above is what is in the diesel model.

I will check on all this stuff prolly monday. Today is my birthday, and tomorrow the wife's. The kids had a party [beer] for us last nite then took off till sunday eve. So it is a little more hectic here with the grand kids (3) so I need a little slack.

My son in Ct. has already offered to put a turbo on it. Geeesh, I'm just looking for a ride other than my fullsize Chevy truck.

Really appreciate the help Colt, and I will get back to you on what I find out. Any other tips (BTW nice pic of your ride) you can give me will be appreciated.

Nice looking rig, hope it serves you well. [beer]

Keep an eye on the floorboard under the passenger seat where it bolts to the tub, K-5 Blazers are notorious for cracking here. If the passenger seat rocks a bit look underneath for cracking around the nuts.
