California power outage to prevent fires

This doesn't sound like a good idea at all.

PG&E Starts to Cut Power for Nearly 800,000 California Customers on Wildfire Risk

So they cut off the power. Now people will use candles for light and cook on a barbeque with limited light. If that doesn't sound bad enough, consider that most cordless telephones won't work when the power is out, so if there is a fire, you just have to hope somebody sees the smoke and sends a fire truck.

Oh but it gets better. What happens when they cut the power back on? In a perfect world, nothing. In California you can bet somebodies house will explode from the spark that ignites the gas leak they couldn't report when the power was out, or the generator that somebody thought they knew how to wire up to the house.

Brilliant plan. How about a some forestry and controlled burns so you don't have these problems every year?

Crapifornica: As noted - candles, Coleman lanterns and cook stoves, outside grills, open fires, the odd kero lamp getting knocked over, and brand new gen-set from Lowes/HomeCheapo without spark arrestors. Plugged directly into the mains and energizing the local branch circuits to boot. What could go wrong? Instead of fires popping up along known power distro routes, they'll be all over the friggin place!

Yup, My baby brother lives and works in the Bay area, they shut off the power at midnight last night and sent out alerts that it would likely be out until Saturday!
Lucky for him, he has lots of refrigeration available to him ( Commercial, his employer) and he has plenty of coolers.
Only trouble is there will be no hot water! He has a gen set, but lives in an apartment so it's a no go!
Pretty fookin stupid if you ask me, they are holding the people hostage for a problem of their own creating, lack of maintenance on their grid! Fookers

Makes me wonder how many people will wake up in their dark powerless home and realize that roads go both in and out of California. Or better yet, begin to understand that saving every dead tree in the forest for some rare owl or woodpecker isn't helping birds or people when the whole State is a charred wasteland.
A few days without power. Wow! Kids might be forced to go outside and play in the dirt. People might have to pick up a book for entertainment... and even talk to their neighbors.

So, how does one purchase anything with the grid down, cant get gas, can't use a credit card, cant run a register to pay with cash, cant charge your hybrid, cant take a hot shower, or cook, no traffic lights, no street lights, ect............
Good look at what a SHTF situ will look like, and this had a heads up, a real one wouldn't give any warning!

They want to leave the Union - I say don't let the door hit you on the way out. They say we have the world's 7th largest economy. I say not for long.

The same with businesses... ATM's don't work, gas pumps, credit card readers, grocery dairy and frozen refrigeration, No employees working therefore 24 hours with no taxes collected in 29 counties, no electric heat, lots of micro breweries without solar, hydrogen fuel cells or generators that will have uncontrolled fermentation's as tank temperatures rise.

    Brutal!! [LMAO][LMAO][LMAO]

Uuuuuuuhhhh, for those that missed the memo, this is the breaking edge of a statewide grid failure.

They wouldn't do these shutdowns if it was voluntary.

However involuntary it is now, it will only get more so in the future if they don't fix the infrastructure.

Pretty soon it'll get down to four hours of power every other Tuesday for the peons and refrigerators will become an urban legend.

Stop that! I almost blew beer all over my keyboard!

I'm betting they won't even need to do controlled burns. If they offer to keep the power on they'll have volunteers that'll rake the ground under the transmission lines until it looks like an Old Corps USMC Company street.

Not a pine needle or leaf in sight, grass cropped close to the deck and perfect parallel lines raked in any bare dirt as far as the eye can see. The solution is that simple. No fuel under the transmission lines, no fires. They also make great fire breaks for the other fires that seem to crop up all over the place in California.

The townsfolk on the dole are probably out of food as I write this. After all, it's already the tenth of the month and the dope money's gone and the kids are probably out of Ramen.

Of course those paragons of virtue wouldn't loot or burn businesses due to an outage and a loose police presence.
They wouldn't hit grocery stores either, good citizens that they are.
    Nope, nothing to worry about.

The possibilities are endless as are the many maybe not quite so unintended consequences.

    There is douchery afoot. :cautious:

So, PG&E Charges Yugely for services, and they have both a budget and obligation to maintain transmission lines, Where the phuck did all that money go? Hum................................
Could it be the states Democraps took all that money to.......................
    Do what........................
Mayhaps the state needs to go after those politicos who took all that money!

How long before people become feral and start going off Taking what ever, any one wanna bet?
I think it will be 2 days at most, about the time the beer starts getting warm, or the ice runs out!

The state commission controls the rates the powco can charge. Then the state tells them how to spend the money on stuff other than maintenance after approving the submitted budget. Most powcos are caught between the devil and the deep blue sea without resources to do what's needed when it's needed. About all that's left is fixing stuff that's busted when it busts.
But yup, somebody is getting rich. Your two days may not be that far off, either.

This is California we're talking about, they lost their minds a long time ago. On a side note, I thought AR's were outlawed in the Golden State.
