TOTOM - October Staying warm indoors

We have a wood stove and that will be used. Currently still working on getting decent firewood at a good price. I was quoted $200 for a cord of pine/spruce then I found a man that had hard firewood. He wants $12 per wheelbarrow. I told him I wanted a cord and he only sells by the wheelbarrow. I am not sure if that is a good deal or not. Currently we are using natural gas and saving the minimal wood that we have for the deep winter while I work on finding a good source for what we need.

 

That seems like a rip off to me just saying. hey did you hear about the restaurant owners son in the hill , his girlfriend stabbed him to death in front of the restaurant.

 

When are you coming down maybe I can buy you guys a cup of whatever.

 

I hope to be down in February. That is the plan. I cannot believe that news story of the restaurant. Yikes!

 

Sometimes during the winter overnight, I would burn a candle in a 1LB coffee can.
Believe it or not, it seemed to take the sharpness out of the cold.
Some people make a candle out of Crisco. It's worth a shot if things get desperate.

 

You did my heart good with the kerosun heater. Right after we were married, the Navy sent us to Yokoska, Japan where we lived on the economy for a year. Had a couple of those kerosun heaters and believe me, with no insulation in the walls and 20F weather, they were much used! Just remember to leave a window partially open for fresh air so CO doesn't get you.

My own plan involves a gas fireplace (needs electricity, sadly), three catalytic heaters and refillable propane bottles (1# bottles plus a couple of 20# tanks to refill them and an adapter). Lots of non-fossil fuel help as well...solar panels, batteries, electric oil heater, sleeping bags and chemical heat pocket warmers. I do have a generator, plus a firepit that could be used in a pinch.

The Upper Midwest can be pretty harsh several months of the year. I'm still refining the plan for a prolonged power outage.

 

Spent a year in the RoK myself (Teagu/K2 airbase) . Had to go down to the ville and check all the cribs for excessive CO. Boss didn't want anyone to croak with their local hooker. When I found a crib with high Co, I had to track down the John and warn him. To say this was an affront to my sensibilities is an understatement - just the same, nobody died that winter...
This was a long time ago (76/77), the local housing stock is much better now owing to the general prosperity in the RoK.

Kerosun left the US market - the company said they were tired of being sued by 'idiots too stupid to read and follow directions'. The heaters we have have knock-offs.
