I just spent Christmas passing kidney stones and while I have tried to drink more water I guess I need to make more of an effort. Take it from me, if you have never passed kidney stones, you don't want to find out what it's like. I don't see what in my diet causes these problems. (it's happened before also) I don't drink soda pop or anything strange. Maybe someone has suggestions? I used lemon and apple cider vinegar to help flush them.
Some people are just predisposed to them I think. I saw one of the toughest SOBs I have ever known laying on the floor crying when he got one. Hope I never get one and hope this is your last!
Been there done that. Had a scan show up calcium in my ureter. Kidney was overloaded with minerals due to high density of same in my drinking water.
Passed a pair of them a few years ago, some of the worst pain imaginable! Doctors gave me fluids to help ease the pasing but it didnt help at all! Worst week of my life!
I drink water like a fish, probably the only good habit I've had all my life. A few years ago I was having some imaging done in the area and my Doc noted I no kidney stones I was greatly relieved. I can't even handle the thought of a catheter let alone a stone.
Totally agree with some people being predisposed to getting them. I have never had one and one of my sons has never had one. His twin brother and Mother get the pleasure of passing a couple every year. Feel sorry for my son, the thought of my X passing them though makes me LOL. Son did tell me he is taking some supplement and medication that prevents them now.. or at least lessens them to one every 2-3 years.
We do NOT drink the water here we buy bottled water... due to the amount of calcium in the water... we even give our pets bottled water... it's that bad here...
Yeah boy!!! Been riding that donkey since 2013 !!! Cut out the gator aids 10-K's and all that. Don't drink pop's,Will drink a few lite beers Bottled water here and I mix about 2/3 ounces of concentrated lemon juice in a bottled water pretty much everyday and chug this. It won't stop kidney stones BUT I believe it dissolves the little barbs off the stone making it easier to pass.
Yes: Lemonade is your friend. The stronger the better. So is distilled water. Lemonade does dissolve the sandspur barbs, and it can dissolve stones--but usually only very slowly. It's also usually a good idea to go on a no-gout diet to reduce the levels of purine in your system.
Drink 8-16 oz of water ever time right after taking a leak. when working outdoors it's probably 16oz per hour or more.
My wife is predisposed to getting them due to the medication she has to constantly take for migraines (kidney stones are a side effect). Ever since she began drinking lemonade daily, about 4-5 years ago, she has not gotten one. The predisposition to kidney stones in exchange for relief from migraines is a small price to pay in her case. Think I passed one a few years back, had all the symptoms but was in a remote location (BOL) alone and could not even drive out for help or a professional diagnosis. I experienced excruciating, take-your-breath-away pain beginning in the middle of the back, them moving to the left side. There was no getting comfortable, laying down hurt, standing up hurt, doubled over hurt all to the point of tears. Finally began vomiting, and vomiting, then dry heaving. The pain continued as I attempted to drive out on dirt roads. I parked the vehicle less than a mile away as realized that I'd probably run off the road into a gully anyway and compound the problem. Then extreme fatigue took over, and I laid the seat back and passed out. Woke up a few hours later with a bladder full and almost no pain, just a little tender. Not a pleasant experience. And when you're in that much pain, those hours and hours are an eternity. Hasn't happened since.
No. I can count on one finger the number of kidney stone patients I've seen whose problem was a dietary surplus of calcium and even then it was supplements, not actual diet. The common issues are chronic dehydration and too much salt. It's not the calcium in your diet that causes stones, it's the calcium from your bones getting leached out. If at least once a day your urine isn't clear, not yellow, but clear, you probably are chronically dehydrated. If you chew tobacco and spit, you are dehydrated. If your beverages are soft drinks or caffeinated, or worse, sports drinks, you are dehydrated. If you eat fast food or junk food or canned food, you probably have a diet that's too high in sodium. The kidneys are designed to pull all the sodium out of the urine, but they have to maintain an electrical balance and the closest sized molecule to sodium with the same charge is calcium. It is worth testing your drinking water because a lot of municipalities add salt to soften it. the only ways to remove the sodium from the water is reverse osmosis or distillation. There are some other things like gout, low Vit D, low Magnesium, inactivity and a bunch of other possible anomalies. T really know, you'd need a metabolic evaluation where you collect your urine for 24 hours and compare a bunch of things between the blood and urine and it would need to be done when you are hopefully stone free and also analyse the stones themselves if you have them. At least 80% of the time it's a combination of dehydration and excess salt. Citrus juice is a good thing, Vinegar doesn't make a difference either way unless you just like the flavor and it gets you to drink more water. Another issue is too much oxalates, Dark green veggies, beer, etc so vegans get stones too,
It's not how much you drink, but how much you pee. If your pee is yellow and you are a stone former, you need to increase the fluids Citric acid does help reduce the stone accretion rate as well as nidus formation. It doesn't have to be lemon, but lemon juice is cheap and widely available at grocery stores. Those sport drinks are just synthetic urine. It was developed as a treatment for heat exhaustion, not a daily beverage. You are certainly better off for eliminating it from your diet
