Both are lever action in the classic 30/30. Same mag capacity. Go!

  2. I wish Marlin's owners would offer more straight stocks. I have small hands and have never liked pistol grip stocks.

It's not the tool it's the operator. I'll take the one that's closest.

Old Winchester over Marlin, until you want to put glass on it. Marlin wins that one. I hate the stupid safety on the new Winchesters

I own one of each... The 94 SaddleRing Carbine is an Old Friend from my Hippy Days, and the Marlin I got from my Godfather when he moved to the Nursing Home... 45 years ago... Both are ready for use... neither is favored over the other....

I had the 94 years ago , it always seemed to be hard chambering the rounds , then my grandfather took it to a gunsmith , he did some work to it and made it operate 100% better . I've got the 336 now ,got a good deal on it ,, it's a lot smoother action than I remember the 94 being . I took the 94 years back , drove a 16 penny nail thru the center of a quarter , backed away from it till I just could see the quarter , and tried to finish driving the nail with the round , with iron sights . I never hit the nail ,, but I hit the quarter a few times . Never tried that with the 336 . That's the best I got for ya .

I, too, have both. The 94 is lighter than the 336. None with the "safety".

Something else I will add . a friend of mine bought a 94 from Walmart a few years ago , I never fired it , but cocked it a few times trying out the action , and it wasn't as smooth as you might think a new rifle should be . And it felt like it may be a cheaper version , it was like the edges of the rifle around the trigger guard needed to be filed or just smoothed out , they were just sharp , like it had small ridges around them . Just for your info .

The newer winchester 94ae rifles don't seem to usually be as accurate as the Marlins.
    I have a 94ae and it's a struggle to get 4 inches at 100 yards.

    Older vs. older= Chevy vs.Ford.
Love them both. I do like the side eject.
    MY OPINION ONLY.
I do not believe in scopes on lever guns. I just don't. WTF do you need a scope on a rifle that is chambered in 30.30? It's a brush gun. If you are trying to hit something farther than175- 200 yrds MAX with a lever 30.30 you need more gun-go get one. I am 56. Will turn 57 in a few weeks, wear bifocals and have for a number of years. I can still see the irons on my thirdythirdys. If a person can't, why not step up to something more suitable for a scope? If a person just has to mount a scope on one, then choose the Marlin. Love them both, BUT, find the Winny to be Faster, but the Marlin to be more accurate, I find the pistol grip makes the Marlin point more naturally, and makes shooting more precise! For a fighting iron, the Winny wins hands down, when speed counts, it rocks!
Now, take it up a notch to .45/70 and it's a whole nother ball game, and that's OWNED by Marlin!
Out side of that, Give me a Winny 1895 and all bets are off, it schools them all!

Winny 94 in 30-30 for me, nice and skinny for fast handling, and I can catch my brass coming back down after an eject. Irons are accurate enough for woods white tail hunting where cast bullets work like a charm.

    Dude, don't be such a girl...:D

TBH the 45-70 recoil is more like a shove vs. a sharper "kick" from the .30-30.
