Plotting out the features of our next home and am planning on a security system that includes some cams. The only thing I know for certain is that everything will be hard wired, so no wireless or wifi.

Does anybody have any good resources I can use to compare the different types (closed circuit vs network vs ?) and info on the various vendors, Leaning towards a wired network solution, but want to know all the ins and outs before making a decision,

The Internet searches I've done return 95% spam, 94.5% sales pitches without any information.

I use PTZ IrWebCams here... They run about $100US ea. most are chinese built... Many are POE as well, but that adds $25 or so to the price... but that makes the Instal much easier, no power issues, just run the CatV and plug it into a POE Switch and you are done... Also if you mount them it the right area, one camera can watch multiple locations and angles, saving maybe more cams just to cover an area... The IR spec gives you fair Night intel out to maybe 50 ft, but it also gives up you Cams location if the bad guys have IR Vision... kind of a Double edged advantage.... most can be setup for eMail Alerts on Movement or Picture on timer...

Just put in 2 more SV3C brand cameras today at our transmitter site. I used the dome cameras, POE with night vision. We use Blue Iris software at our 3 buildings along with various flavors of the SV3C cams. The domes I installed today were around $35 each on Amazon.

I'm planning on PoE for that very reason. I've been looking at Ubiquiti, but can't determine if they support allowing port access by MAC (Cisco speak Port Security, Netgear speak Port Lock Down). I don't want someone to have access to my network by jacking an external camera. IIRC you are running Ubiquiti - have you run across this feature? Been reading through their manuals but have been coming up empty.

I'm putting my wireless and wired on separate VLANS anyways to restrict what wireless can access as an extra precaution. Wireless will get Internet and entertainment system access but nothing else on the hard wired side.

    Ring unfortunately is not secure.
Is Your Doorbell Spying on You? - Unconventional Wealth

"Ring — owned by Amazon and perhaps the dominant player in the video doorbell space — recently reached an agreement with over 400 police departments to share feeds from their devices.

If that isn’t creepy enough, Amazon just filed a patent to put their facial recognition software into Ring doorbells — the better to identify “suspicious” passersby."

Personally I'm not going to trust any of those devices. And, yes, both systems have been hacked externally.

There has also been recent news that Amazon contractors were listening in to private cmpanies through Amazon Echo.

I can't imagine that Google isn't doing similar, remember their business is to sell information about what you do to the highest bidder, and not just companies trying to sell you things.

No ubiquity Cams.... just one ubiquity router that does Layer3 Switching/routing.... I build my own POE unit power supplies...and I use NetGear Managed Layer2 POE switches... The Power supplies are Off the Shelf block Dc/Dc Regulated Switching PSs...(24-36 Vdc in, 12Vdc Out) This means I can remote any 12Vdc WebCam I like, and still use the POE Technology... This also allows my POE Switches to run all the VoIP Phones, on the same wired network.. and a NetGear Layer3 Switch/Router separates the VoIP stuff from the Employee Internet WiFi AcessPoints, the WebCam system, and my Private Internet stuff... The Ubiquity Router brings the three Internet connections to the NetGear layer3 switch, and deals with fall-over, fall-back and load sharing of the Internet Connections from three different providers... This network was built from eBay purchased used hardware, over the last 30 years, for pennys on the dollar... It provided Me a great opurtunity to learn as I built.. The Layer3 Technology was added just in the last two years, and POE Technology in the last 10 years... The basic Network is 4+ decades old and still runs a few AppleTalk Technology nodes running Legacy Software that is no longer supported...

A Rottweiler or two. If they know how to bowl open the front door without your intervention .. even better.
My driveway and entire property is fenced. It's for the protection of solicitors, delivery persons, … etc.

I'm guessing that the Witnesses want to meet jezuz cause they keep opening the front gate when closed and through the one at the end of the porch to reach the front door. Unfortunately for them that gate auto closes to keep the dogs from getting out … it also seriously slows down a hasty retreat a the latch is kinda tricky.

It does make for some amusement, and the individual usually doesn't come back but another group comes though about every year.
UPS,FEDEX and mail folks know walk up to the gate and put the package on the other side. Amazon Prime … not so smart, they've fallen into the Witness problem as well.

Kinda funny watching a delivery person trying to convince a 100+ pound fur missile that a package should convince them not to attack the messenger. Should have read the sign. I'm going to say that Illiteracy hurts.

Also, some of those amazon packaging folk are amazing, big dog teeth and chunks missing from the dropped box .. contents .. fine as can be.

People can be so stupid. Dogs going from window to window as you make your way to the front door, they are trying to tell you, HEY! We don't like you … and we are going to eat you. If it's summer … they are coming through that latch on the storm door don't mean shit, dad will just replace it yet again.

I agree, dogs make the best defences and security! My big boys don't let anything past them, and any one dumb enough to try will get a epic maulin! One Neufy doesn't bark, he can, just doesn't, but he is the best early warning I have ever had, the pup has no issues sounding off, so I get plenty of audio warning, plus he has his big boy voice now, and I don't care how tough you think you are, you hear him sound off at 2 am, your gonna pee your self a little before you run off screaming like a little girl!
Our senior citizen Golden Retriever is the real sneeker, he will wait till your close and then chain saw your arms and legs with his dull teeth! Don't need any high tech security with this crew, and they will not take treats from any one they don't know!

I don’t have to worry about my WebCams phoning home to china, or wherever, as they are on a there own separate VLan, and subnet, that is behind a pair of Layer3 switch/Routers that prevent any incoming or outgoing IP Traffic to that Vlan & Subnet... I get to those thru a second Ethernet Port on my iMac, that sits on that WebCam Vlan/subnet... Keeps outsiders from getting to my Personal Data, and isolates my Private Vlan/Subnet from the rest of the network.. It took a while to prefect this system of isolation, but have hammered on it, and it is very robust...

many cameras now require ya to use the cloud and the cloud is frequently in china

with some camera models it is practically impossible or extremely difficult to use the camera in standalone mode

Dogs and other critters are definitely part of my overall security plan. Surveillance, though, is another part. I want to know what's making that bump in the night before I go outside to check on it. I probably should have used surveillance in the thread title to be a bit more clear.

some of em will automatically connect to any available wifi network or any other network :( :(

many will phone home no matter wut ya do, and home is china fer most of em

they even have other ways of gettin to the internet

the only options left are to build em yerself or [ shameless plug ] have us do it fer ya, even then ya have to be very picky about wut hardware plus software ya get
