Ok, so over here we homeschool, and we really do homeschool too! I've been BOOK OBSESSED since I was a lil' gal and have so many awesome books which I am now making use of with my family in our homeschooling.

So the other day I grabbed one of my all time favs. off of the bookshelf... it's a very old thick hardback book which is 50+ years old about different cultures from around the world, and it's called: "PEOPLE AND PLACES"

Reading is so good for the brain and we try very hard to instill that in our child. As per usual we are having such a grand time, and always love all of the useful SURVIVALIST THEMED STUFF which we've found within' it's pages! Daughter is highly fascinated with the incredible photographs.... so am I, that is why I am going to share some of it with you! :) Talk about "SIMPLISTIC" these nomadic Laplanders in the first story we read about are just AMAZING!!!! True Survivalists!!! I don't think most could do what they do!? Their simplistic structures made of of raw materials (wood, sod & birch bark) harvested from the surrounding wilderness are AMAZING, Heck I wanna build one now!!!!! Maybe we'll build our future home like this, I'm all gung-ho into it!!!

    Check this out:

Since they lead a nomadic/migrating lifestyle (following the reindeer) they take their belongings with them... One of their prized possessions are their goats. Yep, GOATS!!! LOL Check out the photo below with their goats on board their boat!!! (NOTICE: Look to the left hand side of the below pic ~ you'll see little goat heads/horns sticking up & out of the front of the boat! lol ha,ha,ha )

In another part of the book we read about the Swiss Alps and highly enjoyed the pics of their goats which they raise on the harsh/rough mountain countryside. (below photo)

Over here we raise "Dairy-goats" and we make sure to only keep/breed hardy critters ( as man has really coddled them to death like other critters and ruined a good thing ) But anyway, our goats are hardy/easy keepers, so hardy in fact that we've been breeding worm resistance. We've got goats that we don't have to deworm and they do great with virtually no care. Now as we look through this book, we notice how many cultures have made use of this AWESOME SURVIVAL ANIMAL. They do very well, can handle harsh/rough conditions, eat a very diverse diet (unlike cows) and will give you & your family much in return. Raising goats has been such a great pleasure these last years, and if we move further north in the future we shall take our goats with us. Did you know that the Laplanders would make homemade raw milk goat cheeses and during the colder winter months of the year they would take a piece put it into a cup with boiling water and make a very healthful/nutritous drink out of it. Isn't that super cool.... this is the only place where I have read/heard of it!

Just thought I'd share some of what we were up to in our homeschooling, which also included some cool "SURVIVAL RELATED STUFF!" :)

If anyone else has any other information to share on PRIMITIVE SHELTERS OF MAN'S PAST, or other SIMPLISTIC things which man use to do to survive FEEL FREE TO SHARE, as I think many will find it to be of interest. The Book: WILDWOOD WISDOM By Author Ellsworth Jaeger has alot of goodies in it. Who knows, maybe some of these things could save someone's life in the future if ever T.S.H.T.F. or who knows what else could happen? That's why I always try to keep it SIMPLE / REAL mastering all of those types of primitive survival skills.... which you will most definately need if ever something so bad were to happen/it never returns to normal. You'll definately need a back-up plan for when all of your storeboughten stash is used up/over and done. If anything, I atleast hope that by posting this, it will INSPIRE folk to DO MORE FOR THEMSELVES!!!!

    Sincerely,
    Wildernessgal
(whose family LOVE their most versatile/hardy goats & etc...)

P.S.- Goats are so easy to pack up if need be.... you can even put packs on 'em to carry your stuff/have 'em carry your wild edible harvest and so on.... When we take 'em out into the backwoods where the terrain is quite rough they are so steady and have no trouble getting around. Just an awesome easy to manage smaller sized critter, which could make for a very nice addition to a Survivalist Homestead.
Have a GREAT DAY Y'ALL!!!! Bye now...

That looks like a very well insulated shelter he is making. When you want to know how to survive in a particular area of the world, look at what the native people are doing (or did before they were displaced by modern cultures). The natives are expert in their areas.

My family and I are "Smack Dab in the middle of the U.S.A.".... Mozarks.
Actually we've lived pretty much all over the country... hubbie grew up in Wis. doing lots of winter huntin'/campin' even up in Canada. As for myself I was born in MinneSNOWTA, and I truly HATE the HEAT!!! Bah Humbug!!! I've lived all over the U.S. as well, and right now we are just thinking about all of the options including going abroad.

As for goats, you can have 'em/take 'em anywhere as you can see by the pics above, even in the roughest of conditions (<--The Swiss Alps definately isn't warm & fuzzy)... that's why so many primitive out of the way cultures have them. So we'll definately be stickin' to goats and hope to be even more far faaaar away from mass populations as that is a serious issue for us. We are well located here/very remote/private waaaaaaaaay back in the middle of the woods in river country, but we HATE THE HEAT & last year was our worst nightmare! (100 -105 degrees)Heck that's why I left Fl. & Tx. before that.... even now with our currently lower temps here, if you are really into the outdoors/workin' hard you get so freakin' hot. Yesterday I was sweatin' to death! Another thing is, if you stay away from the masses you stay away from rising taxes, crime, NAIS, more over-regulation/stupidity and more.... There really aren't many places to choose from which are truly FREE/promote FREEDOM (regarding Homeschooling Laws, Gun Laws, anti-NAIS www.nonais.com & etc....)

As for internet, most of the time I could really care less if we had it again (to me it's a spy/tracking device) ... but hubbie really wants to have a way to keep in touch with his family. I don't really have any family, so for me it's pretty much a non-issue. I wouldn't mind going back to non-electric, as I'm happier than a clam without it/like keeping it simple, and have lived that way before happily. Just tired of it all/all that it entails and want out I guess.... I want to live out my life in peace & quiet with my family/animals and no one bothering. Is that too much to ask for!?!?! LOL

Thanks for thinkin' of us, but we are kinda "EXTREME" and maybe I should say even "FUSSY" ... this should be a fun journey for sure! lol [LMAO]

I totally agree with ya RR. More folk should use HISTORY to their advantage, & LEARN FROM IT! ;)

    ~Wildernessgal~

P.S.- Sadly most modern natives have lost so much of their culture/ways... :(

Well I did work on building a log replica of Fort Clatsop for a show the History channel filmed a couple of years ago. I think you can still se pics of it on the McPhearsons site, who organized it, at http://www.prairiewolf.net/

Yep, just checked and heres the direct link to that page of his site. http://www.prairiewolf.net/ If you are into PRIMITIVE survival then he is also about as good of an authority as you can find. Aside from makeing primitive tools well enouph some have been sold to museums and such he has also been hired by some of the Indian reservations to come in and teach them how their ancestors did things that have been lost.
