Because why the f not, right? I inherited some medical oxygen 14 cubic foot cylinders from my wife's aunt. I turned some of the empty ones into torch bottles by getting them hydro tested and replacing the med valve stem with a CGA 540 which is pretty much the standard oxygen valve stem for torching and filling them with welding grade oxygen. But the other ones are still full. Picked up a medical regulator off eBay for like $10.
We use a lot of liquid oxygen for SUR-D02 (Surface Decompression on Oxygen) diving ops. Buy it direct from the welding supply because you really can't get gas any purer than in liquid state.
As long as your liquid oxygen doesn't smell funny it's pure. Once in a great while a skunky batch gets made or contaminated some how.
Long ago a much older coworker told me how during WW ll the bomber and fighter pilots in England would fly a sortie then return, hit the club and would be totally trashed until their next mission. They had a fair chance of dying on every mission and few lasted 25 missions. Before the next mission, he and other ground crew would drag them out of the pub or rack, get them to throw up and empty their stomachs and strap an oxygen mask to them. In 20-30 minutes breathing pure O2 they would be sober, no hang over and ready to fly. He said it was all amazing and was glad he wasn’t on a flight crew.
I know many a rig welder that would take the cutting head off their torch and suck in the O2 straight from the mixing chamber after turning the regulator way down. And before anyone says not to do it-none of us ever died over it..
I would onlydo that if I knew the GasMan and he kept his compressors serviced, and had an Oil Scubber on the feed line....
I think the "Gas Man" keeps oil out of O2 lines. There is enough friction from oil in an O2 line it Will detonate. Oil mixes with O2 way too well. I also heard of pilots breathing straight O2 to lose hangovers, from a veteran of the 8th air force.
The whole 02 thing for hangovers is absolutely true! But that's not all it's good for! We used to use it for hyper baric treatment when some one would get sick, or had other issues, and it works! Used to hyper ventilate in pure 02 and then do a HALO with out the bottle or other gear! Equally useful for diving short time, as it builds resistance to muscle strain! Lots of other uses!
Used medical oxygen tanks are really cheap too. They might need a hydrostatic test. The empty one I turned into torch bottle was expired like 12 years ago. They're aluminum so they need to be done every 5 years.
Be aware of potential problems with breathing pure O2. We had this drilled in rather early in the Navy, there are ships with O2 generators on board in rather limited spaces that could concentrate the gas at above normal atmospheric pressures. Oxygen toxicity - Wikipedia
I guess I was wrong. I had been told that industrial oxygen was too hot to use medically. Learn something every day
Industrial O2 has a higher allowable Oil Content than Medical O2... You really do not want Oil Vapor in your lungs...
Wouldn't oil be flamable exposed to pure oxygen I've seen it demonstrated in a safety film,on oily rags, lights right up .
So like working in a machine shop for 16 years? I've got a jacket that still smells like cutting oil that's been in the basement for nearly 13 years.
