forgive me if i posted this thread in the wrong place, still learning my way around here.

I'm looking to change over my garden seeds from store bought to heirloom. I'd like to try my hand at saving my own seeds next season. I did a search for heirloom seeds and a big list of suppliers came up.

anyone have any favorite companies they get their seeds from?

    thanks

We like Territorial seed co. and Bountiful Gardens as well.

Alot of people like Baker Creek, I wouldn't give them a dime of my money, but hey thats just me. I dealt with them before in person and their seeds SUCK because of very low germenation rates. They can't add to save their lives and on two different occations they tried to rip me off by doubleing the price of my purchase. These were orders that were in the 80 to 100 range, so they weren't off by just a little.

I've got beans, tomatoe, squash, melon, okra, cucumber and a few others. dried from this years plantings. I can send you a few of each and you can grow them for next year. PM me with an address and I'll send you some of each. I am in east NM, so don't know how they'll do for you.

Also when your lookin' around at seeds, the term "open pollinated" also means non-hybrid.... just in case you didn't know.

Thanks, no I didn't know that!

As far as Baker goes, I got one of their "garden packs" this year (mid season) with the intention of doing a late summer planting to have a good fall harvest. Less than half of the seeds planted sprouted, I thought it was just me, but maybe I was wrong. Thanks for the tip OGM, I'll try some of the ones you mentioned.

Edited to add: Also with the Baker Creek seeds that's pretty much all I got, seeds. No information on planting depth, spacing, germination time, harvest time, no nothing. Since I primarily use the "square foot garden" method I need all that information so I can plan my garden.

I'm glad it wasn't just us. LOL Sorry I couldn't have warned you sooner. They suck in my opinion. Theres alot of people around here that use their seeds because they are farely close by. But from what I see they have about the same germination rate as you and I did, but they keep going back year after year. [beat]

OGM, thanks for the heads up on Baker.

kckndrgn, how's that square foot garden work for you? We are going to plant for the first time next year and since we have a small yard will probably go with the square foot garden way of planting.

thank you for pointing me in the right direction and for the kind offer JHH:D. in my long slow process of getting as far off the grid as i can .i thought this season i would use herloom seeds and start saving the seeds. i heard very similar stories from other gardeners about gettting seeds that didn't germinate or producing no fruit from the saved seeds planted the following season.

Yep, the others will give you all of the information your need for success (depth, spacing & more), and are totally worth it!! The time hubbie (OGM) & I got seed packets with weavils inside the packets eating the seeds didn't make me a HAPPY CAMPER either. Another place which would be in our top three choices of SEED sellers would be SEEDS OF CHANGE. Normally we don't buy seed anymore as we save all of our own.... but sometimes it's nice to try a new variety and those are OUR TOP 3 CHOICES which have given us great service through the years. BOUNTIFUL GARDENS & TERRITORIAL SEED are awesome, even though the latter is a bit more expensive we've always been happy with them/have never had any probs.

    Best of luck!!!
