Oxygen Deficiency From Face Masks

UncleMorgan I like peeling bananas and (occasionally) people.

    Here's a video I just ran across on Rense.com.

It deals with the drop in oxygen levels a person experiences when they put on a face mask.

In the video, the guy doing the air quality test says he is not a Medical Doctor--but I think he stayed at a Holiday Inn. Probably several times.

He quotes the OSHA air quality requirements. Any environment with less than 18.5% oxygen is oxygen deficient.

Then he uses a simple air tester to show that without a mask the environmental O2 is over 20%.

Then he puts on a simple paper face mask and lips the end of the probe inside. In about two breaths the alarm goes off and the meter is indicating a 17.5% O2 concentration.

That is a serious drop in the available oxygen. It is definitely not trivial.

Obviously, there is some re-breathing of waste CO2 involved when a person puts on a face mask. Notice how they get hot and humid almost instantly? If heat and humidity from your exhalations is remaining in the mask, so is some of the CO2 you exhale with every breath.

How much CO2? That's the question, and the guy with the meter seems to have answered it: enough to make your air oxygen deficient.

    And that's just standing still.

According to a quick net search, a resting person requires 12 liters of air per minute (via about 12 breaths/min) while a person exercising requires 100 liters of air/min (via 40-60 breaths/min.)

And, with exercise, the CO2 output rises proportionately.

I can understand, now, how two perfectly healthy Chinese boys in their mid-teens could fall over dead just running on the local track--while wearing mandatory face masks.

They were both too motivated/stubborn to stop merely because they desperately needed to, so the ran until they died.

There have been several similar incidents around the world.

I can also see why, now, many people complain of headaches and/or dizziness after wearing a face mask a while, even when all they are doing is a little low-speed shopping.

The problem is made worse when a person has decreased lung function for any reason.

So, watch the video and make up your own minds about the risks inherent in wearing face masks.

I'll be making some changes in the masks I make, I think.

His test is not accurate, to sample the air in the mask is a poor way to do it.
Because the lungs have a much larger capacity than the minor volume of the mask. So all he reads with his tester is the exhaust but as soon as an intake is made fresh O2 is inhaled through the mask edge and/or the mask elements and as an exhaust is completed CO2 is leaked around the mask edges.

Better/best is to have a O2 Sat on a finger.
    aka Pulse OXIMETER
At this time, seated at rest I read Pulse 70, %SpO2 96.

Tools, purchase the right ones and learn how to use them.

With a mask my rates drop only 2 points on the O2.
    Pulse does not change.

    Rigged Test IMO.

I read an article today that said ,,, by a neurosurgeon Dr Russell Blaylock,, that said if an infected person were a mask ,, the exhaled virus ,, by not being able to escape could build up in the nasal passages,, enter the olfactory nerves ,, and eventually enter the brain.
Its been a while since I've stayed at a Holiday Inn ,,, but this doesn't sound like it would have any healthy benefits for anyone.

That about the dumbest thing I have heard yet... I mean really? If an Infected Person is wearing a mask... DAH, Hey, They are already INFECTED... it is in the Lungs already, and multiplying like crazy.. It is in their Blood and everywhere else... If your INFECTED, All your body fluids are INFECTED, ALREADY... The mask is to keep you from spraying your INFECTED stuff, onto everyone inside 25 feet...

Being I have COPD I have a oximeter for home testing of my oxygen. So one day I got to wondering if wearing a mask would reduce the %SpO2 reading. I first tested and later after wearing a mask for a while I tested again. The results I got were that there was no change in the %SpO2 reading. I did notice that because of the mask I tried to take in air harder than I normally would. So even though it seemed harder to get a breath, my lungs just had to work harder with the mask on vs. the mask off.

Don't know if my test actually proves anything scientific or not, just didn't see a difference.

As Wild Trapper and I have pulse oximeters, it is the oxygen levels in your blood stream that counts. The thing about the above video is that the so called test were not done in a certified lab settings with repeat test to qualify the test.

Well ,,, there goes my doctoral license.
I don't think anybody has come up with any real definitive proof of about anything on this virus. One doc says one thing,, another doc disputes it , and on and on. Me ,, I'll just do what I normally do ,, stay away from people ,, and go about my business.

    Good call, guys!

I agree: One mask-full of slightly stale air distributed into a fresh lungful probably won't make anyone's head explode.

At least, not like singin' The (Lonesome Cowboy's) Cattle Call...

Don't have any idea who is right, just know that mask with exhale valve, makes it easy to breathe out, keeps the mask dry, keeps your glasses from fogging up and forces you to inhale fresh air, and is a lot more comfortable to wear as is a good full face canister mask.

While it may be hoarding, still haven't used up all the good masks I had in my supplies. When I was trying to prep, never thought that pandemic panic would be the first of the real nation wide problems we would face. Looks like nation wide civil unrest may be second event. Ice storm and loss of power for a couple weeks was local.

A good example, dentist gave me a box of 50 surgical masks a few years ago, he had dispenser with box, and a hundred or so spares in cabinet and I was getting a thousand dollars worth of dental work done. Packed them in plastic bag with O2 absorber, put in pail with other medical and kept in cool dark place. Rubber is still good and although I don't like them, no valve, they work as well as they ever did. The same style are now on SALE for a buck each at local quick stop. Same with 90 % alcohol, hand sanitizer, etc. Don't know about any one else, but I have opened a couple of buckets of my "pandemic" supplies and it has made our lives easier and a lot cheaper and in a real world situation, might of helped us avoid the virus so far.

Interesting that in many of the TEOTWAWKI stories, the first rule of survival has always been the concept of social distancing for oh so many reasons, save resources, keep out illness, keep others from taking your supplies, etc. Jerry's stories always have help your fellow man, but don't kill yourself by doing so. If you die, in the long run you will not help anyone.

As someone accustomed to living at very high altitudes, I'm Hyper sensitive to O2 levels, and if i'm working to breath, there is Something Very Wrong! I Find the standard N-95 masks seem to do Ok for a few minutes, but after they get damp from exhaling and trapping that moisture, breathing becomes labored! We have several different levels of protection for use depending on the levels of contaminates, and while none are comfortable for all day use, they all work for what they are intended for! Think about what your asking these masks to do!

This was one of the reasons we bugged out and went to sea, besides, the Rona doesn't live in a salty inviron, it also means were not dealing with masks, AND, our boat can be dogged down tight and run at a positive internal pressure for extended periods of time, effectively eliminating the need for any masks or other measures!

The real question is why are we wearing face masks to begin with? They are designed to do exactly the opposite of what people are wearing them for. I can instantly tell when people are living in fear because they are so easily manipulated and now they wear masks while driving alone in a car. I can control anyone if I can get them to be afraid of something. Its that simple. How many people in the world can you spot that are living in fear?

    Fear = control

This is stupidity and I WELCOME it. I would like to see all of the morons in the world kill themselves. If they can't pass the common sense test they deserve to die. I'm done trying to raise people up and help them. They don't want it. They want to live in a bubble of stupidity. This has been going on since the US filed for bankruptcy and of course it has, we are under attack. The people telling us what to do have declared war on us in writing! You are really going to take health advice from your enemy? Your government is at war with you. They declared war on you. What are you going to do? Wear an N95 mask and topple a statue? Good luck with that.

I found face shields very reasonably on line, they wear like glasses and are very comfortable.
They are easily cleaned and wear right over glasses.
I use them and bought extra for work in the shop in place of safety glasses, and this works just fine.
Stores require something so you might as well get used to it. It will be the new norm for a while.
